Something seems to be shifting in the mobile space, where Epic (and MS) are seemingly succesfully targetting the cut OS developers take on all software sold on their platforms.  If those cuts disappear on mobile phones it seems like only a matter of time before we see similar actions in the console space.  What happens if console manufacturers can't rely on a cut of the sales from all software?  Will console prices go up?  Will investments in R&D dry up, resulting in consoles de facto becoming even more like just another PC and bringing with it the end of consoles that has been long heralded?  MS is betting on turning Xbox into a competitor for Steam, but will that be viable should Sony and Nintendo go the same route?

I think it's closer to a PC gaming scenario than a console gaming scenario, so the real question is why it's taken so long to get to this point, rather than whether it will result in a similar thing on consoles.
