Icewind Dale from 2000.
Vagrant Story from 2000.
Symphony of the Night from 1997.
Almost (?) all the Fire Emblem games from 1990.
Shining Force II from 1993.
...
Meh. I think this list will just turn out as huge as the list of games people actually remember (because they were good) is. Most 2D games that didn't have too complex gameplay (and thus would maybe feel cumbersome and unintuitive by now) hold up well. Hell, many of them got re-releases relatively recently on the likes of the GBA. Some 3D games from the Saturn and PS1 era hold up well too, but not so many due to how crude 3D was at the time. The same goes for PC games, Deux Ex for example may be too primitive for some while Civilization II is as good now as it was in 96. Pretty much all the good Neo Geo games hold up too. Shock Troopers & Garou: Mark of the Wolves ftw! Capcom's CPS2 games too. I'm glad you liked BASS, it's the interface too that makes it modern.
^That's why I added the caveat that you had to have played it recently. I did not want folks to just list games that they were nostalgic about.
In that latter category I list the Sword of Hope games for the Gameboy. The first game introduced me to JRPGs and I still hum the theme today, 20+ years later, but when I went back to play it, with the passwords you have to write down, and the maps you have to draw, it's utter garbage Makes me sad to say it.
So yeah, to cut down the lists, only go with games that you have recent experience with.

As for BASS, since I am an old dude, I can hang with some jank -- that game is smooth though -- nothing to complain about at all. I guess they could have used better microphones, it's a bit breathy, but the writing and style of that game is perfect.
Those aren't old. Wait until the Leo and the hamster storm into this thread.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time(199 and Majora's Mask(2000) can hold their own against any present day Zelda.

That's because they're exactly the same as them.
Hmm, I don't know. Any unplayable games now, were often unplayable at the time IMO.
Well also many of us can play old games cause we got used to them back in the day. I play Zelda 1 all the time and I still think its playable but others won't. So who knows.
I am replaying SOTN and that is definetly playable now, unless you hate 2D. The 3D Zeldas are good ones. All Mario games, any era. I think Genesis Sonic is. Super Metroid of course.
Diablo II (2000) and Heroes of Might and Magic 3 (1999) are both still excellent games that I don't think time has tarnished in the slightest. Gamplaywise they can hold their own with most of today's games.
Other than that the only older games I play are oldschool arcade games. Dig-Dug, Pac-Man, Burger Time are all games I still spend time with and I think are just great though in all fairness, I don't think I could persuade many new gamers to try them out today.
Dig-Dig, Pac-man and Burger Time. Oh man. They are still so awesome (though DD is the least favorite for me among those). BT is just amazing.
There was a game for the Commodore 64 called Wizards of Wor -- I'm sure it was a rip off of something else, but that is another game that has not aged, it is essentially Pac-Man with guns and it had a death match mode.
Besides FFTactics, I don;t think we'll see too many Playstation 1 games in this thread (except maybe Gran Turismo 2).

Yeah SoTN and FFT are the only PS1 games I can think of off of the top of my head that I would still play today (and since the War of the Lions was the first PSP game I got so I guess I did just play it). The PS1 and Saturn were very transitional machines. Looking back on it they both had one foot in modern gaming and one foot still in old school gaming. 3-D was still being experimented with, controls hadn't gone fully gone to analog sticks yet, and frankly the graphics didn't age age. There's a few other RPGs that people might say have held up like CHrono Cross, but overall I'm hard pressed to come up with any games on those systems I still love.
Yeah many RPGs from the PS1 hold up, now you mention it. You summed it up well, it was a transitional period, and in addition to the challenges you mentioned it was also a time when the camera was being discovered. Last gen (6th) it was stil not fully worked out, this has been the first time that camera problems have not been listed in reviews automatically.
Chrono Trigger seems to always get mentioned in these topics, but for good reason because it really does hold up incredibly well even by today's standards. It came out in 1995 but it's still pretty awesome when I play it on my DS.
I also have Breath of Fire IV on the PC. It's the European version that I found at a retail store in the bargain bin and it still holds up pretty well. But it came out in 2000 so I guess it isn't that old.
Starcraft 1998 and Diablo II 2000 is still amazing as it was back then.
Probably the oldest game that I could still play today are SHMUPs like R-Type which came out in 1987. I have R-Type Dimensions for XBLA and it let's yyou switch between the remake and the original while you play the game and it still looks impressive like a really good SNES game.
I didn't play these old SHMUPs until when they were getting released for the SNES and PS1 like Gradius, Super R-Type, R-Type III, etc., but they're still really amazing.
Other old games that still look great are the old WRPGs for the PC like Baldur's Gate, Planescape, and Icewind Dale as well as the SNES greats like Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Super Punch-Out, and Super Mario games.

Now Playing: Golden Sun Dark Dawn, God of War Ghost of Sparta, and DKC Returns

He's entitled to his opinion, but my opinion of his opinion is that his opinion is stupid.

No arguments there.

What game from the past have you recently played that really has stood the test of time. Please give the original year of release.
Me:
Beneath a Steel Sky - PC - 1994. The graphics are old, yes, but timeless. I started up Police Quest 1, and it was unplayable (though I had fond memories of it), but this game from 16 years ago looks just like any DS game - better even.
Halo: Combat Evolved - XB - 2001. This game hold up better than Halo 2 because in Halo 2 they used those pop-in death masks for the FMV. I could play this game from 9 years ago any day of the week and still find the enemy AI pleasing and the graphics crisp.
I'll have more later.
