Why wouldn't it be in MS's best interest next gen for give Gold away for free?

The way things are moving toward streaming media, why not take maximize eyeballs and get money through advertising rather than the subscription model?

It'll be a cold day in Hell before MS gives Gold away for free. MS <3 $$$$$.

I'm still glad to pay it after using PS3 a few days in a row.

Until someone can provide a service that's as good as Live for free then I don't mind paying for it.

Maybe but there's more that I like to play on consoles so with the amount that I play on the 360 it's really worth it for me to subscribe to Live plus I really like how everything is uniform across the whole service.

Don't get me wrong MS gets some key exclusives on Xbox, but for the most part PC and consoles are starting to share most of the same games. And the PC definitely gets the edge in certain genres. I think that's the reason they stopped porting Halo games to PC this generation...because they didn't want to give anyone a solid reason to avoid the Xbox.

It all depends on what you like though and I'm not just talking about exclusives I'm talking about games like Vanquish, Bayonetta, Blazblue, Soul Calibur, Tekken, Final Fantasy, etc., I could list a plethora of other Japanese games and of course there's Halo, Forza, and Gears of War.

If they really believe people are paying for the SERVICE and not to play online then they should let silver play online but strip  features like cross game chat. But they wont do that cause they know people are paying to play online not cause Live is awesome, they have no choice. I know there are many that would still pay for the service but most wont.

Looking at it from MS's perspective, they've said they are transitioning the XBOX into a set-top box with the next version*. So I was thinking that in order to get the most non-gaming consumers involved they'd want to drop as many barriers as possible.  I guess it could just remain an optional extra service.

I paid for gold up until last year. If I did not have a PS3 I'd still be paying for it, but for the small amount of online gaming I do PSN is good enough for me.

*January 19, MS Spokesperson, "...we continue to grow the Xbox from a game-centric console to a complete home entertainment device."

I got gold for really cheap so I figured I would use it for this year since I have so many games to play. It is a fantastic service, no denying that but I dont see a big gap between it and PSN. Also PS+ to me is something worth buying cause you get so much free crap and save money on a bunch of games you would pay for. It pays for itself.

Because they already get that from their paying subscribers also.

Wrong. Online gaming PC isn't as good as XBL it's a million times better.

Agreed. Sony sucks at download management, but besides that I can't see the difference.

I don't see a huge difference between XboxLive and PSN either, except for the fact that Live is faster at downloads. I could see Nintendo matching them both if they really wanted to. An online service is an online service. Live was a bigger deal to me when it 1st came out, as nobody else was even trying at the time except for the poor little Dreamcast.
