What annoys me is that twitter has become a PR tool used in a devious way that requires one to check it every now and then for news. At least I don't have to make an account for that.

Primarily it is damaging because it gives people a false sense of relational engagement, which I have to presume many use as a substitute for actual relationships. Secondarily it feeds an unhealthy level of narcissism.

I'm not really serious. 80% or more of what I saw is purposefully hyperbolic and or antagonistic.

I have facebook but I hate it and rarely use it. Not sure about its relevance but sometimes I think these websites are vastly overated in terms of potential worth. Facebook shouldn't be making anyone a millionaire.
I have both a Facebook and a Twitter account. Up until a few months ago I never used the Twitter account though I've started to enjoy it now. It's mainly for following celebs or rather comics who I find funny. There's a few friends there too that are good for some one-liners. So mainly twitter is a place for jokes, one liners, and clever musings. I also follow a couple news sources that are very good for breaking news.
Facebook was originally a way for me to keep track of friends in the convention scene who are scattered across the country. Ultimately though I've learned to hate it. You're just better off only knowing some people for a few days out of the year. Facebook sort of falls into this bad zone. With a blog like Livejournal you can express your thoughts and have intelligent discussions because there's not character limit. Twitter limits you to 160 characters so its virtually impossible to say anything of substance. With Facebook though you can say just enough to piss people off and offend them, but not quite enough to fully express yourself.
To Facebook's credit though I still think it's a good source for sharing photo albums. It works just as well as a Photobucket or Flickr, but there are no fees and no maximum limits. Sure you can't store images at high res, but when you're just showing things off to friends and family that's good enough.
I can see twitter as being useful if you have a lot of friends that follow sports. Tweeting about a game in progress, both ways, would be useful.

Stephen Colbert's twitter feed is constantly both hilarious and clever. There's a few others I like to read from time to time like certain game developers to see what's currently going on and such. Twitter is also a great way for people to get together and get their message out to the world from places that try to keep their population locked down and isolated. Twitter has quite literally changed the world.
Facebook does what it does better then anything else and that's keeping family and friends constantly in touch with each other no matter where they live.
People are inherently a social animal and these two products have had huge and beneficial impacts on the world at large despite any negativities they may also bring. Personally I really don't use them that much myself but I would never downplay their importance.

I use both. Facebook is mostly for personal and show promotion - it's a pretty useful way to communicate with fans of the show, get them discussing stuff, and easily able to post up a quick status update in regards to a street date breakage and the like.
Twitter's for both reasons, but mostly personal. And I've used it mostly as a way of finding/breaking news...as well as speaking with some magazine/online writers and the like.

Me too.
First off, I don't use either of them, or any social media sites. I think they provide nothing positive to humanity and are psychologically harmful.
My sense is that over the last 8 months their influence is falling. When Twitter got big, about 2 years ago, it seemed like more people were using it to communicate en masse to friends, but now it seems like it's primarily a celebrity tracker. Is that correct?
And for Facebook, is it as central a part of people's lives as it is made out to be in the tech and regular press? Or is it AOL for the early 21st century?
