Introduction to MMA

What is MMA?

Well it is all in the name! MMA = Mixed Martial Arts. Almost all the practitioners are skilled in multiple arts. One popular combo is Muay Thai for the stand up, Wrestling for takedowns and takedown defense and brazilian jiu jitsu for ground fighting and submissions!

But there are other combo's too, like boxing for stand up, Judo instead of Wrestling and Sambo. There is even a guy (Machida) that has a combo of traditional Shotokan Karate, Muay Thai, Sumo and BJJ.

In this day of age a fighter must be a master of multiple disciplines. A guy who is only good at striking will be taken down and neutralized. A ground specialist is going to be KTFOd.

Stand-up, ground fighting, wrestling, what the hell are you talking about?

Well the stand-up part of the fight is easy to understand. Both guys are standing and they try to strike (kicking, punching, kneeing elbowing) each other, or close the distance.

If fighters get real close to each other they start to hug. This hug is called a clinch, because that sounds more manlier Nyaa. There are various option here. You can knee or elbow from the clinch, you can try to take your opponent down or you could prevent to be taken down if you prefer to stand.

There is also a different way to take down an opponent, by shooting. Shooting is basically diving towards his leg to topple the guy. If the opponent does not see it coming, he will be on his back.

The last one is ground fighting. This is slower and more methodical. Trying to get a position to submit your opponents with various techniques, like armbars, chokes, leglocks, etc. This techniques are designed to choke someone out or break his limb. To prevent that a fighter submits before this happens. This can be by tapping or verbally submitting.

There is also another option on the ground, and that option is striking. Also known as ground and pound. In other words, you lay on top of them and punch them in the face.

So how do you win?

The cool thing about MMA is that are various ways to win. You can win by KO or TKO. You can win by submission or by decision. You can KO people on the ground, standing (or in the air if you are Fedor). You can submit people by chokes, leg locks, neck cranks or even by punches (they tap if they had enough). So many options, so many ways to win or lose.

Submissions tell me more

There are various techniques I will explain the most common ones.

The armbar

With this move you hyperextend the elbow if he does not tap, it will break very easily. There are various variations. The picture shows the basic ones. But you can also do the armbar from the bottom. There is even a flying variation, which is used to submit a standing guy. It is a high risk move though.

Shoulder locks

These move can rip your shoulder of, it can be applied on the top, bottom or even standing.

Triangle Chokes

This move is awesome, you use your legs to cut of circulation to the head. Causing your opponent to faint! It is usually preformed at the bottom, but there is a flying version of it. Yep you heard it right, there is a bloody flying version of it. Oh the humanity. Genki Sudo was a master of the flying triangle.

Chokes

There are many different chokes, but they can have two effect. It can cut off the blood circulation to the head, causing you to faint. It usually takes 5-10 seconds before someone faints, so once the choke is set in, it can go very quickly.

Another way is to close the wind pipe. This way take a whole lot longer, but it is also a lot more painful.

So with all the moves, do all fighters fight the same?

Hell, no! There are different type of fighters, there are guys who are good strikers. So they use their wrestling skills to keep the fight standing and use their ground skills mostly defensively. There are ground guys who want to take it to the ground and there are all-rounders who can do both.

Even among strikers there are many different types. You have guys who go balls out insane, you have guys who are very illusive, etc. You have kung-fu guys, Muay Thai, Karate, etc. The same is true for all the other disciplines.

So who is my favorite fighter?

Fedor no questions asked.

So they all fight in this UFC thing I have heard about, right?

Wrong, there are many different MMA organizations around the world. In America you have Strikeforce, UFC and Affliction. In Japan you have Sengoku, Dream and Pancrase. I mentioned only 6, but there are a lot more.

So can you tell me more about some of the biggest MMA organisations?

Yes

So?

So what?

Tell me more about these big organizations!

Okay, if you insist

The UFC is currently by far the biggest MMA organization. It all started in November 12 1993 as a no hands barred contest. There were only 2 rules, no biting and eye gouging. There were no round and no weight classes. The fight would last until a guy was KOd or until he submitted.

In the early days each fighter had his own style, so it was styles vs styles. A boxer vs a wrestler, a kickboxer vs a Sumo guy, etc. This slowly changed until the fighters were more well rounded like they are today.

The UFC is also the place were the Octagon is invented. Basically is a octagon shaped cage. This is were the term cage fighting is from

Today there are far more rules and the sport is the fastest growing sport in the States. The sport is becoming more and more accepted.

Started in 1997 to match popular Japanese pro-wrestler Nobuhiko Takada with Rickson Gracie. This proved such a success, they started their own promotion. In the heydays of Pride it was even bigger than the UFC. It was shown on Fuji TV in Japan and was also very popular worldwide.

But after Fuji TV dropped their support because of alleged links with the Yakuza, Pride was in trouble. They were then brought by Zuffa the parent company of the UFC, and now they do not exist. So sad.

Later more organizations

The fighters

Fedor "the Last Emperor" Emelianenko

Fedor needs no introduction, because he is well known here. He is the Jordan, Tiger Woods, Roger Federer of MMA. He is the most well rounded fighter there is. He is good standing, has good takedowns and takedown defense and is a beast on the ground. But that is not all, he has an unbelievable work ethic, brilliant gameplans and not a single trace of emotion on his face, before, during and after a fight. He is not human!

Genki "Neo-Samurai" Sudo

This guy is something else. Helicopter punches, flying triangles, doing the robot mid fight. WTF! The guys is either a genius or a madman, no one is sure which one it is. He has crazy entrances, does crazy things during a fight like turning his back at an opponent or drop kicking a guy who is more than twice his weight. To be bad he is retired Sad

Georges “Rush” St. Pierre (stolen from Neogaf)

If you have not heard the name, you don’t follow combat sports. St. Pierre, or “GSP” as he is known affectionately throughout the MMA world, is, essentially, the prototypical modern MMA fighter. He is the fighter against whom all others, consciously or not, are compared. He is an athletic phenom. He has never wrestled competitively in his life, yet is the best wrestler in his weight class in MMA. He is an incredible striker, stringing together combinations that vary punches with kicks and takedowns. He is also an elite grappler, having recently earned a black belt in Brazilian-Jiu Jitsu.

The only area in which we cannot declare GSP to be utterly amazing at is his bottom game, but that’s because he’s so rarely put on his back.

A few short years ago, GSP was called the future of the sport. In 2009, that future has long since arrived. GSP is perhaps the most dominant fighter in MMA outside of Fedor himself, having cut a swatch of destruction through the Welterweight division.

Beyond his physical dominance, GSP is a fan-favourite because he is perhaps the nicest guy in the sport. He’s a total class act, and his not-quite-perfect grasp of English has provided some of the more entertaining quotes in MMA.

B.J. “The Prodigy” Penn (stolen from Neogaf)

BJ Penn is one of the most skilled and unique fighters in the sport. He captivates half of the MMA fanbase, and irritates the other half.

BJ was born into what is pretty much the wealthiest family on Hawaii. BJ took up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in 1997, and, as his nickname suggests, he showed tremendous aptitude for the sport. Only three years after he took up the sport, Penn would earn his black belt and become the first non-Brazilian to win a BJJ world championship.

Penn quickly carried his talents into MMA, and making waves to the point that he shocked the world by beating a prime Matt Hughes. Since that point, Penn has been inconsistent, showing flashes of brilliance, but also showing at times a lack of motivation, fitness, and interest in fighting to the best of his ability.

Since returning to the Lightweight division in 2007, however, Penn has strung together three dominant wins that have re-energized his career, and now he again moves up to Welterweight in an attempt to avenge his prior loss to GSP and achieve glory for himself.

Penn has amazing and unique Jiu-jitsu ability, and also very devastating, though limited striking. While GSP utilizes all of the striking tools of the human body, Penn rarely throws kicks or knees. Instead, Penn’s striking tends to stick to jabs and crosses, but he makes perhaps the most effective use of those techniques in MMA. Penn also has very good wrestling skills, though he rarely uses them offensively, instead using his unique flexibility to defend against the takedown.

Affliction: Day of Reckoning

When: January 24th 18:00 PT 21:00 ET 3:00 Iga time

Where Honda Center Anaheim California

This will be an awesome show. We have Fedor the undisputed Heavyweight champion. Perhaps the best MMA fighter ever, going against Arlovski! Who looked awesome in his last few fights, with sharp boxing and nice legkicks.

Then there is Josh Barnett, the ground wizard fighting against the Dutch hurricane Gilber Yvel. He is a dangerous striker, but has no ground game.

There is also Kiril ‘Baby Fedor’ Sidelnikov fighting against Paul Buentello. Sidelnikov is just 20 years old. Nice to see some new talent!

The whole card is stacked.

But enough talk, lets see the fights

Main card

Bobby Green vs. Dan Lauzon

Paul Buentello vs. Kiril Sidelnikov

Renato Babalu Sobral vs. Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou

Matt Lindland vs. Vitor Belfort

Josh Barnett vs. Gilbert Yvel  (winner will fight winner Arlovski/Fedor in the next event)

Fedor vs. Arlovski (winner will fight winner Barnett/Yvel in the next event)

I have seen all the fights live, and I have to say they were all awesome. I am not joking here. For the squeemish, you might skip Lindland vs Belfort.

If you haven't seen them yet, do not read the rest of the thread, it might contain spoilers!

Spoilers in the thread ahead.

My turn!

There's only two type of grapples I know and understand:

(1) The Manly Booby Bite:

(2) The Smell My Scrotum Leg Hold:

(Zangief doesn't seem to be resisting all that much here. Hmmm...)

--Yep. That's all I see when I watch MMA and Wrestling. Is it just me or do all you guys view it that way too?

--You know you were just asking for this with that topic title... Right? Nyaa

Holy shit at Fedor. He took Leonidas out in one punch, it looked like Fedor was sort of stunned but maybe it was an act or something cause it was like Fedor tricked Arlovski into coming in with a knee, then BAM. Amazing.

After the first 30 seconds, I was waiting for that.  Everything Fedor did seemed to be working out timing on that right hand.  The way Arlovski hit the mat as dead weight made it, though.

Yeah Fedor had is hands low, and he was waiting for Andrei to make a mistake. Most of Andrei straight punches were just glancing blows, while Fedor threw bombs. Man I was worried there for a second, but Fedor remained calm kept his eye on the price and KOd Arlovski in the air.

Some quotes found on Sherdog

“At the end of the first round, I tried to do something flashy and I paid for this,” said Arlovski at the post-fight press conference. “Every single jab or right hand [I threw], I thought that I hurt him. It was really effective for me. I don’t know why I change[d] my plan and did [the] flying knee.”

“He had a slow start,” Emelianenko’s manager Vadim Finkelchtein told Sherdog.com minutes after the fight’s conclusion. “My heart was racing.”

Josh Barnett, victorious in the night’s co-featured bout and next in line to face Emelianenko, was also on the edge of his seat.

“[Emelianenko] was making me a little nervous tonight,” said Barnett. ”I was sitting there going, ‘Keep your hands up and move your head like this.’”

Fedor saw it differently

Emelianenko was the only one who wasn’t concerned about his chances. At the post-fight press conference, Emelianenko stoically shook off claims that he may have been compromised by Arlovski at any point.

“As far as any punches that Andrei landed, I think all of them were just glancing blows and thy really didn’t hit me on the button and I didn’t feel them too much,” said Emelianenko through interpreter Steven Bash.

Though Emelianenko commended Arlovski’s speed and skill, he said he never felt threatened by it.

“Just based on feeling myself in the ring, I felt it was an even fight up to the point when I knocked him out,” said Emelianenko. “When he began his attack, he would open up a little bit. I had a feeling that he was going to make a mistake and I was just waiting to capitalize.”

The right hand, which created a 180-degree arch through the air, was instinctual, he said.

“There’s certain techniques that I practiced and worked on and certain scenarios and this is one of the scenarios that I anticipated,” said Emelianenko. “When that scenario came up, I knew the right thing to do was to go with the right.”

Event

When: 31st January, 3am GMT

Where: MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas

If you are going to spend money on only one PPV, this is it. The card is stacked, you will get yours money worth for just the main event, but the rest is awesome too. Can't wait!

The Main Event

Georges “Rush” St. Pierre (17-2) vs. B.J. “The Prodigy” Penn (13-4-1)

Man this is going to be the fight of the century. The last time these guys fought it ended in a split decision in favour of GSP. BJ gassed in the later round and that cost him the match. This time BJ is in much better form, but the same is true for GSP. This fight is so close, anything can happen.

The text below is stolen from Neogaf.

Thiago Silva (13-0) vs. Lyoto Machida (13-0)

Few things quite match the automatic hype of two undefeated fighters facing off. In Machida/Silva, we have Aggressive vs. Elusive. I'm really not sure how to break this fight down or who to pick, but I'm excited to see what happens. Silva has only had one of his fights go to decision, while Machida has had 8 of his fights (61%) go the distance. I'm going to flip the coin and call Machida the victor.

Karo Parisyan (18-5) vs. Dong Hyun Kim (11-0)

Karo's star has fallen in the past year or so, and he's had to deal with some personal issues as well. Nonetheless, he's always an exciting fighter, and I'll always be a fan. Kim is undefeated, but against lackluster competition. I'm hoping Karo pulls it off here.

Nathan Diaz (10-2) vs. Clay Guida (24-9)

The less-retarded Diaz brother faces off against Mr. Energy, Clay Guida. Diaz tends to pull off come-from-behind wins very well, but this is a step up in competition for him, and I'm not quite sure Diaz has the potential to solve Guida. Guida by decision in an exciting fight.

Stephan Bonnar (11-4) vs. Jon Jones (7-0)

Stephan Bonnar returns after a year-long layoff to fight an undefeated nobody. Bonnar.

Jon Fitch (17-3) vs. Akihiro Gono (29-13-7)

Fitch goes from headlining to relegated to the prelims. Damn. The lesson is: Don't cross The Dana.

Anyway, Gono is a vet, but he won't beat Fitch.

Damn, what a card. (and that's not even all of the fights)

I found this on a MMA forum

Fedor Emelianenko conquers numerous gold in Russian Combat Sambo Championship

Today was the fifth time when WAMMA undisputed heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko won the gold at Russian Combat Sambo Championship. Quarter- and semifinal were over just in 14 and 26 seconds. The final proved to be no obstacle for Fedor as he won it in mere 20 seconds.

Other M-1's fighter Victor Nemkov got bronze in -93 rg.

Link

So Fedor beats his opponents in 14, 26 and 20 minutes respectively. So under minute to win the tourmanent! Wow. Can't wait to see his rematch against Blagoi Ivanov (he beat Fedor in the last Combat Sambo World Championships).
