Does this have anything to do with the comic that began as wartime propaganda? Hugely entertaining propaganda, don't get me wrong.

Spielberg's (relatively) recent comic book film (Tintin) was a tremendous disappointment. Sad Director perfectly suited to making a film out of the best comic ever, does so about 20 years too late in his career...

It was one of the comics that was around during WWII.

The book was about a group of Ace pilots that were of all different nationalities fighting the Axis powers in WWII.

They have updated them in the New 52 to be set in modern day.

I hope they could have all of their war comics get made into movies. They have thirteen that they could make.

They have:

  • Blackhawk
  • Boy Commandos
  • Creature Commandos
  • Easy Company
  • Enemy Ace
  • G.I. Robot
  • Gravedigger
  • Haunted Tank
  • Hop Harrigan
  • The Losers
  • Mademoiselle Marie
  • Sgt. Rock
  • Unknown Soldier

Yep, I've read the first collected volume of the original and really liked it, but it was definitely propaganda. It's very difficult not to make propaganda during a major war, or any time of political instability, for that matter.

For instance, one of the major themes in the marvel films I've seen is the incompetency of the UN, and how it results in more bad than good; it'd be better if the super heroes (superpowers) of the world, were freed up to run things themselves. This is of huge significance, because even though the UN is basically just a sex trafficking and drug dealing front in practice, its power as a symbol was that of preventing another world war through cooperation. Agitating for the removal of such a symbol, without acknowledging what the symbol stands for even if it's a bit of a joke in practice, is highly disturbing.

Modernising them would make such sentiments easier to exploit, but makes me a little less interested. One of the things I enjoyed most was the very kitschy feel of the original, which wouldn't work so well if the characters weren't spiffy mid-century balls to the wall caricatures and stereotypes. I don't think you could do Chop Chop today as he was, and he was my favourite character. Sad That said, if Spielberg does do it, hopefully he comes up with something else just as fun. (Having not read any of the new ones, everything will be a surprise at least!)

Again, just to be clear, I really liked what I read of the original!

Steven Spielberg is entering the world of DC Comics with Blackhawk!

Steven Spielberg is ready to dive into the DC Universe proper with Blackhawk, a just-announced feature film from Spielberg, Amblin Entertainment and Warner Bros. Pictures based on the classic DC series about a squadron of WWII-era pilots. Blackhawk, which Spielberg is hoping to direct, will be his first featured centered around characters from the DC Universe.

The screenplay for Blackhawk is being written by frequent Spielberg collaborator David Koepp, who was the screenwriter on Spielberg’s Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park and War of the Worlds. Spielberg will produce the film together with Kristie Macosko Krieger, under the Amblin Entertainment banner, while Sue Kroll will executive produce, under her Kroll & Co. Entertainment shingle.

In the world of comics, Blackhawk is a wartime adventure series focusing on the titular Blackhawk, who commanded a squadron of ace pilots also known as the Blackhawks or the Blackhawk Squadron. The squadron would battle the Axis powers, as well as more fantastic super-villains and war machines, such as the memorable shark planes, which could operate in water as well as in the air. While the team debuted in 1941 in the heart of comics' Golden Age, they’ve also been adapted to the modern era as a part of The New 52 and have spawned a well-known DC heroine, Lady Blackhawk, who joined the series in the late 1950s.

There where rumors in the 80s and 90s about Steven Spielberg wanting to make a Blackhawks movie.

I only know about them from Justice League.

Tintin wasn't bad.

I agree, but that's as positive as I'd go.

That still makes it better than about half the movies to hit cinemas.

But even if it were truly bad, it would still be better than half the films to hit cinemas.

Well at least this shows ambition on the part of Spielberg then, to go above and beyond what is deemed acceptable in contemporary cinema.  A job done slightly above par.  yes

Anyone seen Your Name?

I bought it, haven't seen it yet. Seemed to get rave reviews from everyone and was a huge hit in Japan.

I’m watching War for the Planet of the Apes for the first time.  The CGI effects are insane.

Dare I ask how faithful was it to the Graphic Novel?

Not at all but there are some moments that kind of call back to it.

Yesterday was the series finale of Ash vs Evil Dead.

It was originally suppose to just be the 3rd season finale but Starz canceled it.

They had a cliffhanger at the end that I hope they release a movie because that cliffhanger left me wanting more.

This story really has very little to do with the original Infinity Gauntlet storyline. Thanos has a completely different motivation for wanting to kill half of the universe.  And no Cosmic level characters were introduced. For that matter, aside from some of Thanos' henchman, I don't think any real important characters were introduced at all.

Despite all that, this really was a fun movie. It's not really a movie you would want to come into new. This is the payoff of the last 10 years of setup. Aside from Thanos, there really isn't any interesting character development or anything like that. This is just pure comic book action porn. It's just cannon fire of fight scene, joke, fight scene, joke, fight scene, joke, fight scene.

I know there's a few gripes, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe has very slowly been creeping further away from the comics and creating its own lore. There's nothing wrong with that. The stories have still been very good. Once you accept that and stop expecting stories pulled directly from the comic books, there's nothing holding you back from enjoying the movies.

As it is, I don't think The Infinity Gauntlet wouldn't really have worked as a movie. Getting audiences to accept that Thanos is killing half the universe in order to impress the embodiment of Death. The Abstracts would be difficult to conceptualize on film as well. They had to pull back from the scale of the original material and trust me, it's better for it.

The movie is better. Way better plot than thanos is in the friend zone and is impressing a girl.

If it was DC, they would have done a faithful animated movie.

About 5 years ago. That would have been acceptable. Silver Surfer and Warlock would have been in it.

I'm sure I'll enjoy Infinity War, but it will still bug me.
