SteelAttack said:Who cares how they look like? Who cares? And again, I assure you if there was some roundtable like that for ME or LBP nobody would lift an eyebrow. Nobody here would make a thread on them. Such a roundtable would go barely noticed.
Because it's not Mario.
Is it not ironic that you brought this round table in discussion?
Why must you be such a Mario fanboy?
gamingeek said:Almost the same yes. The difference being that Halo Reach will be the third Halo game on Xbox 360 whilst Zelda will be the first proper outing this gen, at least 4 years in the making and we haven't seen any of it yet. Whilst we've seen quite a bit of Halo Reach.
So yeah, not quite the same thing, but the same sort of hypocrisy.
I don't believe the number of iterations has some meaningful effect on the retardedness poor merits of the statement. They're both equally retarded ill-conceived, and not worthy of any merit, credit or weight whatsoever.
Journalism is a heavyweight term that shouldn't be applied so freely to any people who write about games. Not now, not yet.

Your impeccable logic always leaves me dumbfounded. I am responsible for starting the events that will eventually lead to my own seppuku.
gamingeek said:Here it wouldn't register, because you are just about the only person so passionate about Mass Effect and Vader is just about the only person semi-passionate about LBP. You saying "Because it's Mario" is just an easy way to dismiss it.
The difference here is that this is not a Nintendo-specific board. We definitely are different than the usual forumers on platform-specific boards. You've seen them before. You know how they roll.
And make no mistake, Mario is the quintessential critical darling. Not without merits, of course. But nobody gets more chastised or singled out in a gaming board than someone who criticizes a Mario platformer (not spin-offs).
Again, what I'm saying is that a LOT of these people are no different than us. They happen to write for known media outlets, but they usually aren't more informed than us. Why should we be so concerned about whether their opinions are factually wrong or biased? They were voicing their personal opinions, flaws and all. Not voicing IGN's opinion, nor representing the collective opinion of the gaming world.
Steel don't start with the Nintendo gets a stronger reaction crap. Every side has defenders and stuff, if one is louder than another so be it but it is not important. If this was said about Halo it would be the same thing.

I was talking about Mario, not Nintendo as a whole, why are you equating them?
I've yet to find someone who disregards or demerits anyone as a gamer because of not liking Halo, while I've seen plenty of the opposite elsewhere when someone says he dislikes/doesn't care about Mario.
I know every franchise has defenders and detractors. It's just that Mario holds a very special place in everybody's hearts because of its relevance throughout most of our [gaming] lives. It shocks people to hear somebody dislikes or doesn't care about Mario. "How can you call yourself a gamer?"

I understand that last part, I bet it gets annoying. The reason I think so many feel that way is cause Mario, to me at least, represents gaming at it's purest form. Super Mario Bros. was my first game as it was almost everyones in my generation. In the end it is still about taste but Mario is like that all time great movie where if someone says they don't like it they get looked at all weird.

No, there is some merit, if you look at circumstance. Before GTA IV and Halo 3 were revealed they had almost mythical status, they were these mysterious game changers that upon revelation could wield a large impact on the market. Zelda sits in this position currently. No one will argue about it's commercial impact (I say it won't sell systems - zelda fans probably have a wii), but in game design terms it's this looming shadow of excitement.
Halo Reach is the third Halo game on the current generation of hardware and it's already been revealed, hell people are playing it right now on XBL. So it's not the same thing and reversing the statements don't quite work.

Flaws and all, hence we should be allowed to discuss those FUBAR flaws. Especially when these guys are making money from it.
Mario a critical darling? Yeah it is, but tell me that a similar feature on any well loved franchise like Metal Gear, Final Fantasy or Resident Evil wouldn't ellicit such a response on any board?
I care about games journalism like I care about the games that are important to me. And I care because I was fans of the sites I used to hold in such regard. I care that inept people get paid to write about games. Like when I broke down Gamespot's increasingly bad reviews on my blog. I also care about cartoons which is why I posted the IGN top 100 in this thread and the comments that followed that.
Mass Effect or Little Big Planet critiques wouldn't get the same response? Perhaps. But doesn't it only make sense that a 25 year old series that has sold a zillion games would have more people caring about it than an IP, a couple of years old, with 1 or 2 games in it's lineage? It's not just Mario which fits into the "well loved franchise" category.
Dvader said:I can see that some of the IGN quotes in that discussion seem illogical and stupid but as Steel stated people become jaded and express themselves in a poor manner. I understand that these people are just like us but they are being paid, it's their job, call me crazy but I expect a bit more from these guys.
This is how I feel. I don't play or like sports games, but in no way would trash them like that or act superior for not liking them, especially if I was being paid and knew that a ka-jillion people would be reading me thoughts as a paid games writer. Although I do enjoy feeling superior for trashing Bioshock.
I kid. It's good.
Trashing Mario as a character in the way Ryan did? That's like trashing Mr Peanut or the Kool Aid guy as a character because they don't have complicated backstories. Mickey Mouse isn't a character anymore so any game with him in wont be worth it? Sorry Mickey!

Do you feel persecuted for not liking Mario?
Good
Mario is the best representation of an entire genre. No one gives a shit if you say Mario Party is shit, or Mario Golf isn't your thing. No one blindly defends Mario as a character, only on the quality of the main game line.
Those games are not sacred cows, or there wouldn't be so many Mario Sunshine detractors. Or even people who don't really like New Super Mario Bros, either the DS game or the Wii one. (I think the DS one was disappointing) Christ, how many people here hate the first Zelda DS game? If the Zelda series is sacred then I just curled a turd on Spirit Tracks. And Majora's Mask's boxart is impossible to view through the smeared faeces of other people.
I curl a turd on you all!
Like I said on the first page: a comment from the IGN section by a user:
"I could never get into galaxy. I didn't like the space theme and all the worlds felt small. I don't want to have to enter different levels in the same solar system, I want one big world to explore. Something closer in design to Mario 64.
I did enjoy the storybook and the introduction of the Rosalina character, as saving Princess Peach needed a break. But I just couldn't get into it. I'm sure 2 will be great, but I know this time I can pass on it."
This is how you express yourself like a normal person.
Dvader said:SteelAttack said:In the end it is still about taste but Mario is like that all time great movie where if someone says they don't like it they get looked at all weird.
I may give someone a sideways glance, but that's all.
If they said something like this though:
I didn't dig the waggle, but the real issue for me was the camera.
Mario's (well-deserved) status prevents people from realizing how terrible of a character he is. And when I play a game with characters, I need good characters. Sorry Mario!
For me to care about Mario again, I need Nintendo to take him somewhere crazy. And no, the "galaxy" is not crazy enough.
That is when I say something back. Something more crazy than completely changing the design and taking him out of the mushroom kingdom and into a world, a universe, where anything can happen? Where physics and spheres and gravity effect you. Not crazy enough?
That's because you're batshit crazy.
BAT SHIT.

I'm not in disagreement with any of you, actually. Like Yoda accurately said, there is a difference between acknowledging one's not big on a given franchise or game, and dropping poorly structured opinions (they're opinions, however, not reviews or official statements) that lack accuracy.
What pains me to an extent is watching people like you guys, who I have grown to care about and appreciate, get somewhat worked up because of statements like these, giving them credence when they don't deserve it, and generally considering them journalists just because they happen to write about games.
This is not the place for me to pontificate yet again on the flawed system prevailing in this industry regarding reviews, editorials and press releases, as well as coverage from media outlets.
I just happen to believe a more thorough analysis on the current state of the gaming press is in order, and a more critical approach from out part is required as well in order to further advance and improve the quality of their efforts.
We talk about it because it's interesting. We complain about it because we're right.

I'm an angry gamer on the internet.
This what the internet is made for. I'm not crying myself to sleep because of IGN, I just like pointing out how stupid they are. It's fun.
Foolz said:But the camera was my only main problem with Galaxy! Or rather the orientation of controls when you suddenly went upside down or whatever. Very annoying.
BAT SHIT.
If anyone wants to read it the IGN: Alan Wake Second Opinions is up. But no one owns the game yet, damnit.
Now let me get started on this abomination:
Gamespot Gut reactions to the 3DS announcement.
They act like the 3DS is just a 3D version of the current DS. Now what baffles me is that the press release specifically stated that this was the next proper handheld. So someone got the news, decided to do the roundtable and misinformed all the editors and writers.
Then the problem is that they try to do all these snarky comments about how lame it is that Nintendo is releasing another version of the DS, but it falls completley flat because everybody else in the gaming community knows that it's the next proper handheld.
It's just a tremendoes facepalm moment.
These guys work at a gaming site. At the very least they should have amended or pulled the roundtable and done it again with the proper information. It's just mind bendingly cringeworthy. But... funny
Foolz said:But the camera was my only main problem with Galaxy! Or rather the orientation of controls when you suddenly went upside down or whatever. Very annoying.
Well, I would say that if I have a problem with the twists and drops of a rollercoaster that it isn't actually the coaster's fault. I just can't deal with it.
angrymonkey said:Well, I would say that if I have a problem with the twists and drops of a rollercoaster that it isn't actually the coaster's fault. I just can't deal with it.
A rollercoaster's twists and drops behave logically and consistently. SMG's orientation was not consistent, and incosistency in controls=failure of epic proportions. Luckily due to the easiness of the game (suck it Iga) it was only a really frustrating problem on one particular purple coin level.
