The Last Story reviewed by Nintendo Life - 8/10

"When not working through scripted chapters, a number of side quests and eccentric characters and objectives can be found in Lazulis City, a rather large hub location. It’s possible to lose hours running errands, talking to the locals and generally exploring; it feels like a living, breathing place, with solid physics also allowing neat effects such as Zael bumping into disgruntled locals. They’re small touches, but they contribute a lot."

"The Last Story is, in many ways, a significant achievement on Wii. With gameplay that is both simplified and complex, solid controls, attractive presentation, online multiplayer and a touching, well-paced plot, this title can be considered as a definitive entry in its genre. Technical problems with the performance, in particular regular and punishing drops in frame rate, unfortunately drag the experience back. When the game engine performs it's terrific, but too often it struggles and significantly impacts your ability to control the action. The Last Story's many strengths, however, ensure that it's a story that can't be missed."

Eurogamer review The Last Story

"Comparisons will inevitably be made to Monolith Soft's Xenoblade Chronicles, a JRPG defined by its sense of freedom and its generosity. The Last Story is filled with a similar spirit of innovation, though where it ends up is nothing like as satisfying. Its world is beautiful, but the few opportunities for exploration rob it of the thrill of its more expansive counterpart, while its battle system excites but never truly engages.

The Last Story is born from the same desire to reinvent the genre that both Final Fantasy 13 and Xenoblade Chronicles sprung from, but in sacrificing complexity to serve narrative, it seems that Sakaguchi has arrived at the same place as his former employers. It's a familiar mix of wonder and frustration, and it's eclipsed by Monolith's more intoxicating vision of the JRPG's future. The end result is a tale that's worth hearing out, but hard to hold dear."

This has sold the game more to me than anything else. I love wandering about nice towns and cities in games.

Eurogamer said:

The Last Story is a beautiful game, its visuals washed through with a sepia tone that perfectly reflects the wistful melancholy that Sakaguchi's work has been steeped in; a thick, deep sunlight lends the world a soft autumnal glow.

Lazulis City, the sprawling hub from which The Last Story's various chapters spring forth, is a breathtaking construction. It's the heart of the game, coursed with sinewy alleyways where you can chase the echo of people lost in lazy mid-afternoon gossip to find secluded courtyards that then give way to bustling markets and picturesque waterways. It's one of games' great cities, and it's a heady pleasure to get lost in.

Its characters benefit from an equal amount of care and colour as well as some thoughtful translation.

You can see it in this video:

IGN last story review says it has the best combat in any rpg, japanese or otherwise. Graphics are great, it's a tight game with no shortcomings. Seems really up on the game. It's about 20 hrs long, so not scary huge or anything and it's not too hard either so that fear factor is washed away for me. Looks very, very decent and the main city especially has all the detail of an Assasins Creed game.

Also, you can dress everyone in their undies

IGN Review The Last Story 8.5

"The quality of the localisation is superb, and that great combat makes it more exciting to play on a minute-to-minute basis than any other game of its sort. It’s a game worthy of its pedigree"

ONM Review the Last Story 86%

The Last Story is a robust release in the Wii's twilight months, mostly matching its pedigree with a compelling, wistful tale of courage in the face of overwhelming odds.

Xenoblade's shadow or not this sounds awesome to me. I might end up playing it before Xenobalde because it's shorter. (If I get it.)

Same here.  I have wanted this more than Xenoblade when both games were JApan only and I haven't played Xenoblade yet even though I've had it since the beginning so I may as well play this first

Yeah if I hadn't played Xenoblade I would play Last story first otherwise post-Xenoblade it might come across as small and non-epic.

EDGE mag reviews The Last Story

"For an RPG, The Last Story is short and too easy, but also trimmed of the superfluities of many of its brethren. But for all its inconsistencies, complexities, inadequacies and oddities, The Last Story offers an entrancing and seamless flow of interesting experiences. And surely that, in the final reckoning, is what counts"

8/10

Gamespot review the Last Story

"The Last Story is a brilliant role-playing game that's as rich and emotionally affecting as the best in the genre. The Last Story is worth the price of admission and a captivating experience that everyone should play, JRPG fan or not."

Am I the only person who was under the impression the European release would include the japanese voice track?  It does not.  And I am not one bit pleased about it.
