Hello and welcome to the cartoon awards. Over the past year and a half, I have been watching reams and reams of classic cartoon reels. These are shows that go back 25 years in some cases, so whilst they are nostalgic blurs to you, they are fresh as daisies for me.

As such I will be looking at them with a current and valid viewpoint and awarding gongs and dongs accordingly.

First up, the award for....

MOST REPETITIVE CARTOON SERIES

...goes to........

thundercats.jpg

It all started so promisingly, their planet explodes, they are exiled, Jaga sacrifices himself to get the Thundercats to their new home as the mutants decimate what's left of their race.

But then it descends into a formula so inherent and repetitive it puts the A-Team to shame. Every episode there is a plot, by Mumra to pull off some evil shit. Then at the end Liono uses the get out of jail free card known as the Sword of Thundera which shoots out magical beams which somehow save the day.

130 episodes down and this formula barely changes and if anything it becomes even more outlandish as they decide to make the Sword of Thundera a swiss army knife. Need a bridge? Well the sword will shoot out a beam of light bridge. Need to fly? Well grab onto the sword and it will fly. Need to catch falling Thunderkittens from the sky? Well the sword will shoot out a beam that will gently cushion their fall. Ugh.

And by the by, Mumra is unbeatable and even when destroyed or killed, he always comes back. Always. And in the second series he gets a mumra mutant dog.

Episodes watched: 130

Stay tuned for the next award. Happy

Now after that intermission for Iga's Crane Company, the next award is for the:

BIGGEST RIP OFF

And the award goes to....

X-men

2s632ty.jpg

I'm gonna cut your wallet out of your pants Flyboy.

Bejesus. The company that produces these dvds in the UK is Clearvision.

Let's put this into perspective, they sell the discs individually for around £10-13 each. So if you buy 4 discs are you are £40-52 in.

For that money you can get 24 discs of the Thundercats. You can get 4 discs of Galaxy Rangers for £13. Clearvision know that they have X-men fans by the balls and they are bleeding people dry. This is why I have stopped watching these admitedly excellent cartoons until they become more price friendly.

Episodes watched: 4 discs worth.

The award for

THE MOST FAMILY FRIENDLY CARTOON

Goes to...

This is not a show that divides the lines between boys and girls, child and adult. Girls may not watch GI Joe, boys may not watch My Little Pony, but everybody, both young and old can enjoy Gummi Bears. The series is filled with an old school charm that Disney seems to have lost. A gentle humour that brings a smile, a family at war and yet at peace. Brothers and sisters and grandpas and fathers all together in Gummi Glen.

If there was an award based on heart and spirit, this series would get the nod. A true classic of our youth.

Gummi Bears was a BAD-ASS cartoon.  It was actually a pretty important stepping stone for Saturday morning cartoons too.  This cartoon really raised the bar for animation.  Before this most cartoons just followed Hanna Barbara's model of just bare bones animations and recyling as much as possible.  Gummi Bears was actually a big risk for the Disney at time, but it paid off and really ushered in a much higher level of quality for cartoons.

The sad thing is that they only released 3 dvds worth of shows and seem to have no intention of releasing the rest. Sure you can watch them on youtube, but its not the same.

HE- MAN

Is a triple award winner.

MOST RE-USED ANIMATIONS

10x7bbd.jpg

If you used to watch He-man, this should be a familiar sight, as they use it about once per episode. They re-use animations so much, even laughter animation for the female characters. A lot of the time its the same animation with different lip synching. It feels very bare bones at times.

WORST SOUND EFFECTS

When a man falling off a cliff is married to the sound of a whistle being drawn down a string tube, you know something is up. The sound of this 1983 show had effects more in keeping with a 70s Hanna Barbara cartoon. Sometimes it's awful.

MOST SEXUAL CHARACTER DESIGNS

This is Teela, captain of the guard with her boobies accentuated, in her underwear, there are even frequent crotch shots. All the men have glistening butch bodybuilder physiques too.

And then there is the Sorceress.

se86br.jpg

Whose voice makes her sound like a sex starved english chick.

HOT

Award for worst name:
F.

That's right. F.

Sure the Italian version is called F-Motori in Pista and the Spanish one F- A Todo Gas, but the English vesrion (as far as I'm aware) is called F.

Do you know how bloody hard that makes it find information on it beyond the odd anime site and imdb/wikipedia. AGH! AAAAAAAAAGH.

(Yes that picture is from the manga rather than the cartoon, but close enough.)

That is amazing!

Too bad TMNT has nothing like that. Sad

Turtles is bad, they sell them in a cockamany scheme too. They start out in individual volumes then start dvd packing in sets for seasons later. And there is another series of turtles on dvd so you have to really do your research online before ordering.

OMG A Technodrome case would be awesome. There are so many episodes of this series though, I think they did like 10 years worth.

THE AWARD FOR MOST UNDERAPPRECIATED CARTOON

Goes to,

wb3swi.jpg

The year was 1994, the company was Disney. The original idea for Gargolyes was Gummi Bears in the city, but Disney wanted something darker in tone. And thus, Gargoyles was born. In ye olde England.... well, Scotland Gargoyles turned from stone to living creatures at night and in a magical turnabout, get frozen in time only to awaken in the modern world, New York City to be exact.

The series tells the story of their adjustment, the fight with new enemies and meeting new friends along the way. It has a very good voice cast, including some Star Trek the Next Generation regulars like Riker, Troi and Data.

The writers were all big Shakespeare fans and if its one thing Shakespeare was good at, it's tragedy. It can be a very difficult thing to write, having circumstances culminate in an ironic, tragic twist at the end. They do it with aplomb.

There are a few episodes, mainly with an evil gang known as the wolf pack - that are standard fight episodes but its mostly very good and underappreaciated.

Look up the first episode on youtube, I gurantee you will be hooked.

Oh, sadly Disney has only released about half the episodes on dvd and refuses to release the rest.
