I know. That first screenshot we saw with Sonic in that blue sports car was ridiculous. And it is which is what makes this game wacky and fun.

The good news is that it's pretty good. It's gotten good reviews, which is what sold me on it to give it a try. The bad news...well, here are my impressions.

The Good:
1. The game is really fun to play, especially online.
2. No lag online. Very smooth with no slowdowns. Getting into a game is no problem.
3. Graphics are amazing (playing the 360 version). Track designs are great, but almost...I'll touch on that below.
4. It's a Sega fans Smash Bros. of racing. Lot's of content and familiar faces.
5. Game is cheaper than most 360 or Wii games, which is another reason that sold me.
6. Controls, gameplay, drifting, and all that play like a dream. Very easy to get into.
7. More skill based than luck. Unlike Mario Kart Wii, you won't lose because of cheap items. This is why it feels like the Mario Karts of old like Double Dash and the DS game.

The Bad:
1. Not enough themes. 24 tracks are based only around 6 Sega franchises. That sucks, but there's potential for DLC. (Sorry to Wii owners, no DLC for you).
2. Some more famous Sega franchises are absent: no Streets of Rage, Phantasy Star, Altered Beast, or Toe Jam and Earl. (Also could be DLC later on).
3. Some tracks aren't that great and lacks creativity when compared to some of Mario Kart's past greats. Still a great set of tracks overall, but it could've been better.
4. Online is great for now, but may run out of gas in the long run. Depends on sales and DLC support.

Nobody will give this game a chance. Mostly Sonic Team's fault for making so many bad 3D Sonic games. But Sumo Digital did a admirable job here making the best kart racer for the 360/PS3. And dare I say it's a little better than Mario Kart Wii? Well, I think it is because the game isn't made accessible for beginners to have the same level of playing field as experienced players. There are no cheap items or frustrating rubber-banding AI racers, constant blue shells, and experienced players going from first to worst in the final seconds of play. It's more skill based like the Mario Kart of old, which is why I think it's a better kart racer for core players than Mario Kart Wii.

In other words, you can play with your little sister and grandma but unlike Mario Kart Wii, they won't stand a chance against you.

Double Dash and Mario Kart DS is still better though. But so far, I think Sonic All-Star Racing is the best kart racer of this gen. Maybe Mod-Nation Racing will be better. We'll see.

Track design-wise, obviously, graphically and visually Sonic Racing has the upper hand. But I think some of Mario Kart Wii's designs and Double Dash or the DS MK has more creative tracks. But overall, the tracks in Sonic Racing are good as well. But some are pretty bland especially the Dr. Robotnik ones. Those are the worst actually. Everything else is pretty good.

I think it's a solid racing game. So I say give it a chance if you can.

Overall score: 8.5/10

You bought this. So should be ban you now or ban you later?

I'm not sure about what you say about double dash because that still had cheap stuff going on.

I think the random crazy results in mario kart are all part of the fun.

I'd actually like to get this too but Bad Company 2 is coming out this Tuesday and Final Fantasy XIII next Tuesday and I'm definitely not going to hold off on FFXIII. Perhaps I'll pick Sonic Racing up a couple of weeks later.

This one is on my radar, I'd love to have a good kart racer.  Does the AI rubberband like a mother?  If so, I might pass, that has always been an issue for me when it comes to racing games.

No Shenmue levels, but the Jet Grind Radio levels look similar because it's in Tokyo.

From what I've played so far, I haven't seen crazy rubber banding. I think the game does a good job of letting skilled players win or lose a race, with some luck because of items. But there are no crazy items that will destroy you in a cheap way. I think it's pretty balanced even though the items are slightly unoriginal because they're just carbon copies of Mario Kart's items.

Like I said, they're very similar to Mario Kart so MK vets will feel at home. For example, Sonic shoes work like speed mushrooms. Street cones are like banana peels, red rockets are red shells, green boxing gloves are like green turtle shells. Very similar to MK.

But there are some original items as well like a star that makes other drivers drive upside down for a few seconds. I think it's the lightning of this game but you don't get squashed. And there's a huge horn that knocks annoying drivers that are all over you.

Will definitely be picking this one up soon. Dug the demo, and it's something I want to review for Level 3.

Oh yeah, I just noticed Rags, that you can turn rubber-banding off in the options or multiplayer (if you race with AI racers). It's called "Catch-Up" and there's an option to keep it on or off.

Good thing Sumo Digital put that in there.

Once you turn it off there should be no problems with annoying rubber-banding.

That is awesome... I wish more devs would do stuff like this.

Yeah. At first I had no idea what that was so I just turned it off. And I was killing the computer racers leaving them in the dust. They weren't catching up either.

Now I know why. Which is good. That's why I'm saying it's slightly better than Mario Kart Wii because it's more skill-based for core racers. MK Wii should be the better racer but those gameplay tweaks sort of kills the experience. It should be fun but it's not sometimes.

Also, why am I so frightened to compare Mario Kart Wii with this because you might bring on the ban-hammer down on me at GS!? Nyaa

The 360 since I don't have a PS3 yet.

But even if I did have both consoles, the 360 version is best because of Banjo Kazooie as a exclusive character and you can race your avatars.

Reviews say that both games play exactly the same, so the 360 version is the way to go because of the extras.

Why not use the $10 to get Nuts and Bolts? It has racing in it too.

Believe me guys, the 360 version is the best. It's not just graphics and Banjo but the Wii won't get DLC, new tracks and characters, because of the no hard drive thing.

And no damn friend codes! Nyaa

And no damned online fees! er, wait!

Personally, the lack of DLC makes no difference to me. I'd never pay for it anyway.
