This weekend I was going through my Wii Shop account to download some of the old VC and WiiWare titles I bought long ago, and while I did that I surfed around on the WiiWare section. After browsing though the shop for a while I came away with a big question for Nintendo.  Why wouldn't you attach a direct link from the eShop to the WiiWare shop? There's a really high quality library of games here, and most of them look fine on an HDTV. It's already a built-in gap filler for them during their downtimes in their release schedule. This is just some of the notable games on it:

  • World of Goo
  • Rage of the Gladiator
  • Final Fantasy: My Life as a King
  • Lost Winds
  • Castlevania Adventure Rebirth
  • NyxQuest
  • Dive
  • Contra Rebirth
  • Blaster Master Overdrive
  • Muscle March. . . okay maybe not Muscle March

Point in there are a lot of excellent games, and plenty of good solid ones. And for the most part, it's all just sitting there gathering cyberdust. Make it easier to buy these games dammit!!!

That also brings me to a second question. Why the hell did WiiWare get such a bad rap? I get why a lot of developers may not have liked it. The pay-out structure was horribly archaic, but as far as the average joe, what was the problem? "There are no good games!!" What? Go fuck your mother's ear, there are plenty of good games. I don't get it. And I'd fill in more clever mother fucking insults to throw around, but it just occured to me I have to go to work, so with that.... please discuss.

Since you seem to be on a Wiiware binge, may I suggest Hoopworld?  That game reminds me a lot of Sega Soccer Slam, which is a total blast to play.

I'll put it on the list, but I'm not buying anything new at the moment. Just downloading old stuff I previously purchased.

Yeah, I noticed your post about it.  Tough luck.  That's why I have an accountant.

Anyhow, back on topic: I don't think Nintendo feels like it'd be enough of a feature to merge the Eshop and Wiiware.  And then there's the extra complexity that they use a different store credit.  And what to do with games that are available on both stores?

I also think people didn't like Wiiware because it had such a horrible storefront.  It just wasn't a welcoming place to browse games, and if there's one thing devs want from a digital storefront it's visibility.  I think Nintendo made some huge improvements in that field with the WiiU eShop.  It's actually pleasant to just browse the highlights and promotions and such.

Oh, and you also forgot the Bit.Trip games.  The original and 'Void' are unbelievable.

I just wonder why they can't migrate all of it over to the eShop. I can't imagine it's that difficult of an integration. Not unless Nintendo did something completely and utterly repairable with the Wii Shop (which is entirely possible now that I think about it). Like you mentioned the storefront was not terribly good. Not at the time anyway. But as I go back and look at it, it's really not terrible. Just search by genre and it's pretty manageble. Still better than PSN on the PS3 these days. PSN really did a great job in lowering my expectations of virtual marketplaces.

And yeah the Bit.Trip game were epic. Runner, Void, and Beat were all just killer games.

Every hardware company has done a horrible job with how they utilize their online libraries of downloadable games. It should be a Steam like service where the games are attached to your account, and you can download them on ANY generation of hardware...meaning all PS3 era titles  should be downloadable on PS4, 360 to Xbox One, and Wii to Wii U.

It seems very backwards to me that a service with downloadable shit doesn't operate this way. Trade in your old consoles and lose access to all the shit you bought on them! Yeah!

You can download Wii shop games to Wii U. And play them too.

Since no one brought this up yet: you can't expect these storefronts to work like Steam.  A shift from one console generation to the other isn't like going from Windows7 to Windows8.1.  It's like going from windows to mac.  Microsoft, to the benefit of Steam, has a huge interest in keeping Windows as backwards compatible as possible.  This is not true for plaftorm holders.  Why invest in keeping your OS backwards compatible while you could just be selling those games to the same people for a second time?

Perhaps over time we'll see the PSN, XBL and whatever Nintendo is cooking up adopt a similar strategy as Windows, but as long as there is such a thing as a console generation I don't see this happening.  And once the concept of console generations is gone, we might as well all just start gaming on Steamboxes.

But you can't do so with the same eShop credits.

I've been using Wii a lot for Netflix so I checked my points. It says I have to buy 1000 points minimum which takes me to 1400 points.

So what can I buy that uses all of it?

I think an N64 game is 1000 - cant do that as I need 500 minimum for a NES game.

SNES/Megadrive games are 800 I think, which leaves with 600 - not enough for another SNES game. Crap

I just wish they would hurry up with U versions of these games so I could get the Star Wars trilogy. And maybe Mercs. Moar arcade games too. Quite why Capcom haven't used all their old scrolling beat em ups... grrrrrrr
