Well, I love SHMUPs so my definition have always been something like Gradius, R-Type, etc.
But I guess you can call Sin & Punishment 2 a SHMUP.
I forgot that you can't move your character in on-rails shooters. Never mind what I said. S&P2 is a SHMUP, a 3D one.
But GG should still get it just because it's so awesome!

No it's not. You are comparing apples to hand grenades. Nuclear hand grenades. It's more like on rails Starfox sections.

It is non-stop adrenaline pumping action with incredible diversity in level design and bosses. Each level has like 5 boss fights, all well done. It has very basic mechanics, point and shoot, you have a very basic lock on attack (with the boy) and you can dodge and stuff. You also have melee attack which can be used to deflect missles back at enemies. I kind of like Panzer's controls better cause I feel the 360 turning is a great feature and I like locking onto multiple targets (yes I know the girl can do that). But the level design, wow, the way the screen fills with enemies, lasers, rockets, bullets and more is what really blows me away. I have never played a shoot em up so wild. It is all very creative, it's not just flashy lights on the screen just to make you go woah, there is some good level design.
2 players is kind of pointless. The 2nd player doesn't get to do anything but shoot. You are just a cursor on screen, no character to move, no lock on power or melee.Very poor 2p game. I would take turns with my friend controling player 1.
I got through stage 5 which is like F-Zero. In that level you fight this huge sabretooth boss, then a giant vulture boss. My friend joked around how they should come together and combine into a super tiger vulture boss... sure enough that is what happened. Its insane. I can only imagine trying to go for high scores, trying not to die, finding all the medals. It got my high score competitive juices following.

The level design is particularly good.
As for SHMUPs S&P is what you could call a 3D Gradius. It's on-rails but you dodge bullets by moving.

But I don't even really like Starfox on rails games. I played and enjoyed them in the past, I'm just not into it anymore. It would take a bigger franchise then Sin and Punishment for me to get back into it. Like Starfox.
I grabbed a copy (and my dick) haven't played it yet.
