On the latest gameunder podcast (get 'em while they are hot, fresh one coming soon), I talked about selling some of the games in my collection. I've moved over $500 just selling of fduplicates or games I don't have the console for.

Here in Australia, the collecting scene is very, very narrow. Like Very. Particularly for systems that were never sold here.

But I have to say, the process so far has been very theraputic (sp?). Anyway, podcast has more about it early on, but it's also been great selling this stuff to people who have more passion for it than I do, it's crazy really.

I'm not doing it for the money, it's more just coming to term with my mortality and realizing that I'm not going to ever have the time to play the games I have, so it makes sense to move some of them on while someone can still enjoy them rather than have my daughter throw them away 20 years from now.

I also have fun writing the copy:

This is Metroid released by Nintendo for the NES. How can you not own this seminal game from Gunpei Yokoi, inventor of the GameBoy who died under mysterious circumstances after having left Nintendo?

I'm only selling it because somehow the dear Lord, blessed me with two of them. If you have an NES collection without this game... you need it, because besides being the first of a genre, it's actually a fun gameplay experience.

This is a US version and has been tested on a US NES, Retron 5 and another aftermarket console.

Hard to find from an Australian buyer.

I am the original owner and this has been housed in a smoke-free home.

Everything is in great shape, check out the photos.

Cartridge only, no manual, no box.

Does this make it the reverse of a midlife crisis?

The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

How can you not be all over Aspro's abomination of the word therapeutic?  Seriously, if he was some European guy trying to sound smart by (ab)using expensive words, you'd have corrected him as fast as your Australian hobo internet would have allowed you to.

On topic, I have listened to your podcast (or at least the bit about games, I didn't get the finish the whole thing) and I must say I can totally understand you getting all fuzzy inside over giving those games a home in the hands of people who can appreciate their value as much, or even more so, than you yourself could.

The difference is that I expect better from you.

Yep. I was at a relative's house for one night over the weekend. My backpack and clothes all smell like the inside of a Vegas casino. My wife also picked up some family heirlooms from her house, lots of metal pieces like candlesticks and such. All of that stuff needed to be polished and wipe down to start to get the smell off.

Ugh, don't get me started.  I've got clients I always plan as the last appointment of the day, just so I can go home, take a shower and put my clothes in the washing machine once I'm done there.

Thing is, growing up both my parents also smoked and I never noticed a thing.  It's only when you don't smoke yourself that you notice how bad it all is.

Yeah, hate when I order something online and the stench of cigarette smoke hits me when I open the box.

Sorry. I do get to talk to people who are super passionate about the games in my collection I don't give a shit about, which is cool.

Like a kid who JUST NOW got his first DS and has been watching Izuna The Unemployed Ninja vids on YouTube, and I was able to sell him a sealed copy of the sequel (which from what I can tell was not available down here). Or an older man who as a kid didn't have the money to buy Metroid (one of my duplicates) who was able to finally get it for the first time and play it.  Every one of my sales has a good news story about it, and given that otherwise this was just going to sit on a shelf until someone threw them out when I die, is a good thing.

You know, you should do something like a blog about that.  There's bound to be plenty of good material there.

So in theory one could fart repeatedly in a game box and when you sell it, the buyer will smell nothing but your butt gases.

Interesting....
