Unfortunately my copy did not arrive in the mail today. It’s estimated to arrive this Tuesday. Contemplating on replaying RE7 to get prepped for Village.
Yeah, which waiting game is better: Village post or Tsushima updates?

The answer lies in the heart of battle.

Kinda busy tonight. I'll try to give impressions tomorrow

Damn I want to play this. Still have not played RE2 remake and RE7. Damn family!
Sorry about the wait, discord really hurts my posting here as I am having constant RE convos in the RE era discord. I have beaten the game once on standard, currently halfway through hardcore mode (which is what everyone should pick). RE8 is a strange game to nail down, it's kind of all over the place but the quality of the game is top notch throughout. It has the skeleton of RE7, if you follow the game beat by beat it sort of mirrors RE7 but with a lot more extras. It then adds RE4 elements to make it more action but it doesn't follow the RE4 design philosophy for action segments. The result is a game that doesn't have the best aspects of both, item management in 7 and enemy encounter design in 4, but it manages to create its own unique feel which is great.
Never has a RE game been so open with a world that opens almost like a metroid game. You can revisit old areas with new items and find loads of optional treasures and even hidden boss battles. Each of the four lords are vastly different from one another creating great variety in the scenarios you play. It's also a longer meatier game than most RE games.
I feel this game will fit right in front of 7 for me but fail to break the top tier of RE games. It's going to be a bit more divisive than 7 but ultimately I think it's safe to say this is the better game, 7 was the better execution of a core idea.
I'll have more after I beat it again as standard was so piss easy. The problem is the first section is maybe the hardest section of the game so people playing on hard were screaming it's impossible, but after than it becomes very manageable. I say play hardcore, it makes the action better.
Mercs is a fun extra mode but it's not as good as previous versions. It seems you have to do everything a very certain way to get max scores, not really letting for experimentation.
Yay! My copy finally arrived today. Will start playing tonight. I guess I’ll go right into it on hardcore mode as this seems to be the top recommendation.
Good grief! I must have died about a dozen times during that lycan attack at the beginning of the game before I got it.
Made it past the mine part, into Lady D’s castle, fought two of those bug woman vampire things. Enjoying the game so far, probably a bit more then RE7. It’s a pretty good looking game. Sometimes though I’d swear that I pulled the trigger and the gun should fire but it doesn’t.
I played through this n 7 recently, back to back. All in I do like the games, but I do not love the games the way I do classic resi.
As far as dealing with monsters/zombies/whatever I'd argue first person Resi is last place in that department versus action resi (4,5,6) and even classic Resi (1,2,3, remake). It isn't nearly as vapid a gameplay experience as 3 remake, but it has a problem with all the action stuff they paired back. In classic Resi your limitations lends itself to some tense encounters, because you aren't pin point accurate with everything. It's not the deepest combat ever, but positioning, moving around enemies (because tank controls are actually a solid design choice unintentional or otherwise), and just running away and planning your routes around to conserve resources is more interesting than it is in first person. For starters on a mouse, I'm hella fucking accurate when the enemies move this slow lol, and unlike action resi, shot placement doesn't matter here. Tripping in Resi 8 seems random, as opposed to consistent shots to the knee, same with shooting weapons out of enemies hands. But even if it were consistent, the enemy count would be a bit of a problem, since there is usually so few of them on screen (kind of classic resi, except again YOU ARE ACCURATE THIS TIME), you just fucking press S, and take shots to the dome. Especially in one on one situations.
8 specifically gimps any sort of resource management and ammo conservation, and I get it Tomas will bring up that you always end up an arsenal in this series. But 8 and 4 and its ilk, like completely annilhate that element from the game a lot earlier, and without the part that you at least sort of have to explore the spencer mansion, rcpd, and the streets of Racoon city to get that loaded in those games. Usually optional encounters that can be tough, but yield big rewards. Some of that is here for the Magnum, but just use the Magnum on the big bad lycan and get the crystal for more fucking money. WHich btw beefs up your other guns, or lets you buy more ammo and healing. Or you get recipes noww, because you can craft ammo and healing. And I think in expanding from 7s limited crafting items, they actually made shit less of a choice in 8. I was admittedly frugal with using my healing supplies in 7 n 8, and so I always had 3 healing supplies + stuff. But I had to choose here and there between do i wwant to be extra loaded on the heal, or do I want handgun ammo, or some grenade rounds for my grenade launcher. You get less of that hear because you get so much scraps n shit, part of this could be my fault, I'm a metroid player, so I explore the shit out of areas.
But the point is the combat mechanics are fun on a lizard brain level, but they lack any sort of depth that was present in action resi or classic resi. Unironically these games should let you suplex enemies/roundhousekick/punch them wwhatever wwhen you stun shot the enemy, because as is the combat loop isn't exactly gonna make Mercs all that fun. And exploration wise, I liked the Baker Compound in 7,...but I think that area peaks at the cerberus door. The bug house and the barn are more or less linear, and I wanted an expansion of that major house in 7 (because yah im one of those people who think the boat is okay, ans the cave sucks in 7 lol) in 8, but that's not what the game is? Like again it has a castle that loops in on itself, but it's not nearly as complex as RCPD. The game is structured more like Zelda than anything? At least my brain sees it that way. You ahve the village playing the role of Hyrule, with the 4 lord zones playing the role of dungeons.
And while I do enjoy the castle, and weirdly the factory I guess. The other 2 are a bit mixed. One is actually pretty sick and the most Silent Hill shit i've gotten since Silent Hill 3, but I doubt its gonna be all that hot on a replay. The other is meh straight up.
I played on Hardcore, I beat it again on Village of Shadows. I wasn't impressed, I sure as fucck don't care for the part where you play ghetto Modern Warfare, right downw to night vision goggles. I like the game, it's enjoyable, it's polished, it's beautiful to look at, but I'd also concede that my appreciation for Capcom, Resi, and the horror game boost has elevated 7 and 8 to a status higher, than I normally wwould give games that are on this level of gameplay quality. Like these are the type of games I normally would have been its "aight" like a Horizon or fucking Witcher 3 or Uncharted.
I like it more than that, its a far cry from being as boring as 0 or CV, and frankly I like it more than the 3 remake. And obviously 6's campaigns. But wwhile I respect these 2 entries more than I do Resi 5 and Resi 6 Mercenaries mode. I would rather play Resi 5 and Resi 6 Mercenaries if having to pick one or the other. Pls make another game like 2 Remake. Pls for the love of christ, stop making an action game if you aren't gonna bring back the mechanics of 6. The best part of this franchise (not ccounting 4 the greatest video game ever made, stfu tomas) are the Spencer Mansion in Remake 1, and RCPD in Resi 2. Make a WHOLE ASS GAME at the appropriate resi lenght, with a setting, play space like those. Make back to back spaces on par/within shouting distance of those. I will grant you the finaly 40 minutes to an hour to be straight up action game to end the game on some crescendo wacky Resi scenario, but the major stretch of these games should be when it's horror metroid, not when I'm going room to room unloading shells into creatures.
Oh and End of Zoe is fucking amazing, you power bomb the boss guy monster in that DLC, and that is somehow not the stupidest thing that happens in that DLC. I FUCKING LOVE IT !!!! lol

We are on the same wavelength on this one. Can't disagree on most of what you said. I probably like it more in general than you do as I really love all these games for different reasons but all the issues with the design stand.
And yeah how the hell do you perfect the formula with RE2R and then never do it again.
My massive RE8 review is up. Its gigantic cause its two reviews in one, a spoiler free one and then a spoiler filled one.
Anyway, not to say that this still wasn't a fun game. The opening sequence with the lycan attack was fantastic. And Lady D's castle with the daughters was very reminiscent of what I loved RE7. That's also where the game peaked for me. I did like parts of the lake segment and the factory was really good, but it just went on too long. That battle with heidenreich was one of my favorite boss battles of the series though.
That's another small complaint. Overall, I thought the boss battles were a little lacking. I didn't find any of them real interesting aside from the aforementioned one. That leads me to the dollhouse segment. I still think that could have just been an entire full motion video. The baby was creepy, but very easily avoided. Maybe that changes on a harder difficulty? I don't know, it is a segment I'd probably want to skip if I ever do another playthrough, but at least it's brief I suppose.
I'd also like to have a special shout out to the Duke. For whatever reason, I found the character super intriguing. I really hope he makes a return to the series, because I would love to find out more about him. I was actually a little disappointed day left his origin clouded in mystery, so I hope that means it gets revisited.
Overall it was a really good game. Great setting, and lots of memorable moments. Certainly worth playing.
Few things in gaming are more exciting to me than a brand new RE game! While the remakes have been amazing (well RE2) they are still versions of games we know. Finally the story moves forward as we get the direct sequel to 7 starring the worst main character Ethan. This will be far more RE4 like than classic RE so get ready to shoot your way through hordes of enemies and massive bosses. I can't wait!
