I remember my first play through as well. I didn't buy it immediately because I still had s ton of games to play from Christmas. When I did, I already decided, with eleven months to go, what my goty would be. When you play RE5 and 6, you realize that Capcom's needed Mikami more than Mikami needed Capcom. It's amazing how this still looks as good as it does. In fact, there were parts of The Evil Within that I thought RE4 looked as good as.
I only kept two Wii games to this day, Metroid Prime Trilogy and RE4 and I seriously doubt I could part with them.
I added a sentence above explaining that I moved from my tiny TV to the giant TV in the living room on the second day and finished the game that way. Wow I remember I first played this game on an old CRT TV. It was like 22 inches, a square box. But man did it look PERFECT on it. In march of that year I got a sony HDTV for my birthday and GoW2. So it was only like two months later I got the HDTV and RE4 never looked the same again until the HD release. I must say that the giant screen HDTV (one of the first models) had the look of the non HDTVs for RE4, it looked great on it. My small LCD created all sorts of jaggies. The problem only got worse with the Wii.
Loved this game. I came very close to not playing it too. I went into GameStop shortly after it was released and grabbed a copy, but at the last minute I changed my mind deciding it was probably too violent for my tastes. Instead, I got the now legendary Alien Hominid....
A month later I traded that it, tried the demo, and went for it. Thank god.
You know what I always remember about this game? Archiegates comparing it to Ninja Gaiden and the widescreen ratios.
This was the main reason that I bought a Game Cube a few weeks prior to the game's release. Awesome stuff indeed.

LOL...I remember that shit. He was a huge Xbox fanboy.
Constant arguments on why Ninja Gaiden was more impressive than RE4, and the only reason RE4 looked as good was because of the black bars. Both games looked pretty incredible for the time. They both still look good today.

Yeah, he was cool though.
Yeah I didn't like him at first, he reminded me of that Alex Watchtower guy. But then he grew on me.
For me, Resident Evil 4 was the last truly ELITE game in the series. And I expect it will remain that way unless they ever manage to get the original team to work on it again.
Call it whatever you like...action, adventure, whatever. To me it was a perfectly paced and super atmospheric adventure game with an action overlay done in a way that was never seen before. What shows Mikami as a master is how this game still FEELS like a Resident Evil game, unlike every game since that has used the name and characters in games that feel nothing like what the series was intended to be anymore. Even RE5, though a solid game, doesn't feel like RE the way RE4 did.
I expect to play it again this year. I haven't played it since 2007.

What the fuck
That blog entry was amazing. How did I miss it back in the day?
I remember that RE4 was the first preorder I ever put in at my local then-newly opened EB Games. I remember the clerk said that he wanted his own GameCube for it, and that they'd had more than a few people buying the few GameCubes they'd had in stock.
RE4 was perfect back in the day. Heck, as soon as I'm done typing here I'm gonna go fire up the HD version, 'cause as loved as it was the original GC version doesn't look great on my 42-inch plasma TV.
What I loved about the game was there was new content, it always pushed you forward, no backtracking. And the pacing of course was superb.
You know it took me almost 40 hours to play through Resident Evil 4? I just loved every inch of the game so much that I had to take my time inspecting the detail in every new area before moving on. Its something I also did with Metroid Prime 1. And with both games, even thogh I prolonged them to 10-15 hours longer than they were, I still wanted more.
One of my favorite areas was that research place towards the end with those monsters that you had to use the x-ray thing on to see where to shoot. Those guys were super creepy. Its stuff like that that was missing from RE5 and 6. They try to do shit like that in the Revelations games, but the way they do it now just seems cheesy, like they're screaming "SEE?! LOOK!!! WE CAN BE ALL CREEPY LIKE SHINJI MIKAMI!!! We have this new enemy with a pencil dick...and another with 5 ball sacks! Soooo scary!!"
No you can't and no its not....just fuck off.
What was your fave weapon(s)?
I loved the striker and that pistol with the wooden handle and laser sight for headshots.

Good question...there were so many I can't remember them all.
I always love the shotgun in RE games, but instead of the Striker I actually loved the military grade shotgun...forget the name, it was the one that was a step up from the traditional one....all black.
Oh..the Riot Gun:
GG...I think you are talking about the Red9 handgun?
I also enjoyed the mine thrower....brought back memories of using it in Nemesis:
10 years ago today we got a revolutionary action game that has yet to be topped. Quite possibly the best paced game ever created. The game design should be studied by every single aspiring action gameplay designer. The game was perfection, it ushered in a whole slew of clones, TPSs would never be the same again. It is Shinji Mikami's greatest masterpiece. It is the greatest action game ever made. It is Resident Evil 4.
The graphics were mindboggling at release, it still looks great to be honest. The over the shoulder aiming while it wasn't an entirely new concept, had never been done with such precision. Every single bullet counted, every moment was exciting. The level design is unparralled, the first village area alone is better designed than most games, I dare you to find a better designed action level than that one.
The aspect that still most impresses me is how long RE4 sustains the intensity and variety of situations. Most games repeat gameplay moments and run out of ideas well into the 5th or 6th hour, RE4 was about 12-15 hours long and every single new room had some new twist to keep the player on their toes. Whether it was a new weapon, new enemy, a boss battle, some new kind of world mechanic, traps, puzzles; the game never once felt boring. It has one of the greatest collection of boss battles ever put in a game.
I still remember my first playtrhough of this game clear as day. I remember getting the demo and sinking in 20 hours into it, replaying the village over and over marveling at this new gameplay I had never experienced before. My hype was through the roof and the game proper not only met the hype but exceeded it in ways I couldn't imagine. I beat RE4 in two days of practically non stop playing. I bought it the morning of the 11th and played non stop for close to 10 hours that day. I distinctly remember the first area after the village which I had played hudreds of times before, that sense of excitement of finally seeing something new and then BOOM, dynamite traps! The feeling of firing the sniper rifle for the first time and watching that incredible reload animation! Never has gun fire felt so powerful. The first time I got on that boat and I could around the lake, I was so impressed by the scale of the game, then of course a giant boss battle broke out. At the end of the first day I stopped right before the verdugo fight. The next day I moved the GC from my tiny TV to the big screen in the living room and finished the game that way, took me all morning and afternoon.
I remember getting stuck at the two garrador battle for a time. I remember the fear of entering that hedge maze, man I really hate hedge mazes. The first time I saw, or I should say didn't see, a novistador, jesus so scary. The regenerators, that sound they make! Being hunted by a predator like Verdugo in the sewers was nerve wreaking, who says this game was not scary. Having an indiana jones like mine cart sequence. Battling Krauser in one of the most epic boss battles ever. MIIIIIIKE!!!! I can go on and on and on and on.
So lets celebrate one of the greatest games ever created. The game I still hold every other action game I play up to. I have been waiting 10 years for a game to surpass it and it has yet to happen, I wonder if it will. To Resident Evil 4, 10 years old and still as amazing as the first day I played it!
