I didn't get YLOD, but I too have recently had problems with my PS3. In the past 2 months it stopped turning on, though apparently using canned air to dust it was enough. It's been running hot too and it's louder than hell. Very similar to events that lead to my first PS2 dying. I think I have another month or two before it's dead though. Seems like Sony built the PS3 Phat to die right around the time they launched the PS4.
In Summer the fans get loud, (as you have heard), but other than that no probs.
About 2 years ago I improvised a four point stand that elevates it about two inches (50 mil) in the air so it gets better ventilation.

Pefectly executed planned obsolescence. Well played, Sony. That's reassuring, though. Not turning on appears to be the only problem, so it just might have enough life in it for Killzone 2. I'm apprehensive about starting Yakuza 4, though Aspro. Don't want yet another one that I've had to stop midway through for an extended period of time.

Just finished transferring mine onto a metal rack on top of a plastic box...
Fans got crazy loud. Never had it give me a warning, the first time it shut off it got yellow light. If you have a fat it is only a matter of time.
I had the newer model that came with MGS4 and the blu ray drive in it completely died after about a year and a half.
Between that and going through two or three xboxs my confidence in next gen hardware is not great.

This wasn't me. o_O
I did suffer a massive fuckery when FFXIII killed my disc drive during a cutscene (heh, what else?), but the system was good for downloadable games and Netflix and all that shit.

That's the incident I was thinking of. At least I got the symptom right, just not the game.

I've been waiting for a day under 30 to try it out, but all the smoke + Antichamber has put me off playing it anyway.
I think I've been getting the overheating error for awhile now (getting progressively worse, to the point where it happens every time i quit a game or program or eject a disc) and yesterday I finally got the red flashing lights and no turning on. After leaving it to cool for awhile I got to the menu fine, but haven't tried it again yet.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has lost their PS3 for the same reasons (I think Robio got YLOD which as far as I can tell is the final stage of this, and I remember Steel getting Rayman stuck in his PS3, but not sure what the reason was) and if so if they went through a similar experience to me; and if they did how long from this stage until their PS3 died completely? I ask because I have 6 or so hours left until the highest rank on Killzone 2 and God be damned if the PS3 completely dies before I get it!
