Last year Nintendo came strong with plenty of great games. Not that many noticed.

Got me thinking, (setting aside sales numbers), what was the best Nintendo generation?

Everyone is going to say Super Nintendo.... so Super Nintendo.

Every era had their amazing moments, N64 for innovating 3D gameplay and Zelda. GC for Metroid. Wii for Mario Galaxy and TP.

Lets hope Wii U gets a game that good.

I knew everyone was going to say SNES, but they are wrong. Probably.

I want evidence-based answers.

For me personally it goes down like this:

NES = No charm. Yes all the initial seeds, but Metroid II was on Gameboy as was Super Mario Lnd 1 and 2. I don't enjoy Mario on NES and same for Zelda.

SNES = Great memories, but too much licensed shovelware. Outside of Chrono Trigger and a whole bunch of JRPG (and a few notabel sports games) not for me. But for years this was my favorite console based entirely on Nostalgia.

N64 = Absolutely loved it. The depth of games available, including Nintendo first party was brilliant. Doesn't hold up these days, but still a verysolid system.

GC = Whats to complain about other than the shit Mario Sunshine? Absolutely loved everything about it, including third party support.

Wii = Super Mario Galaxy. Other than that, nothing but shit.

Wii U = Wouldn't know. Nothing has compelled me to buy it.

So for me it would be between GC or N64 or SNES.

I am going with GC.

I would pick between Wii and GCN since that those are the systems I most enjoyed.

My criteria for how well I liked a console is based on how many games I had for it that I loved playing.

I loved every single Nintendo console I have played but I'm just choosing based on the games I had that I thought were great for Wii I had 30 games that is the most I have ever had for one console.

It's pretty sad when it's supposed to be 'all about the games' they had one of their best years ever and that's all overshadowed by twerps ragging on how lame Wii U is. Most of whom never even played it.

Wii for me, something new, unique and inventive. Great sequels including two of the highest rated games of all time. A wealth of unique and varied software. A mass market price and plenty of consumer support for it.

It's almost a toss up between GC and N64.  I think GC would edge it out because we got good Mario and Zelda games.  We also got the sublime Metroid Prime.  Plus, two new IP's, Pikmin and Animal Crossing.

I love all the easter eggs that are hidden in the start up screen.

All the different sounds you get when you start up the GCN and press buttons on the controller.

The GCN and the FDS have the same main menu music just the GCN's is slowed down 16 times.

This is why GC would never be near the top for me, Sunshine and WW were weak compared other Mario and Zeldas. I don't really count TP as a cube game as it came out at Wii launch. So for Wii we got 2 awesome Marios, 2 awesome Zeldas, 2 awesome Metroids and a host of awesome 2D games like DKCR. Ă„swell as 2 awesome Endless Oceans and other quirky cool games like Little Kings Story.

Gotta go with the SNES as it had great software all around from both Nintendo and third parties.

Nintendo:

  • Super Mario World
  • Super Metroid
  • Zelda A Link to the Past
  • Earthbound

Square

  • Final Fantasy II
  • Final Fantasy III
  • Chrono Trigger
  • Secret of Mana
  • Super Mario RPG

Capcom

  • Breath of Fire
  • Breath of Fire 2
  • Mega Man X
  • Mega Man X2
  • Mega Man X3
  • Demon's Crest
  • Street Fighter 2
  • Street Fighter 2 Turbo
  • Super Street Fighter 2
  • Final Fight
  • Final Fight 2
  • Final Fight 3

Konami:

  • Super Castlevania IV
  • Contra III
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
  • Sparkster
  • Cybernator
  • Gradius III
  • Legend of the Mystical Ninja

This is just of the top of my head so I'm probably missing some along with a whole bunch from other developers.

I have to go with the GCN.  Wii had some great games, but it really flatlined near the end, and boy, dit it also get a lot of shit games released on it.  Also, when comparing my GCN and Wii libraries, I can only conclude that the GCN was leagues ahead of the Wii.

Seriously: Wave Race BS, F-zero GX, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, RE4, PN.03, Viewtifull Joe, Mario Kart DD, Jungle Beat, Odama, Rogue Leader (and co-op in Rebel Strike), Pacman VS (packed in with Riiiiiiiiiidge Racer), Burnout 2, Time Splitters 2, Pikmin 1&2, Luigi's Mansion, Metroid Prime 1 & 2, ...  That and the fact that it was a powerfull system on par with the Xbox, as opposed to how Wii (and WiiU) are comparatively underpowered.

I've loved all Nintendo home consoles, but to me, the GCN stands out as their finest work.

DS was my favorite. I put hundreds of hours into Animal Crossing Wild World. Not to mention games like 999, Phoenix Wright, Meteos, Ouendan 1&2, Elite Beat Agents, NSMB, Mario Kart DS, Yoshi's Touch 'n Go, Yoshi's Island DS, Kirby Canvas Curse, Pac 'n Roll, Tetris DS, Sonic Rush, Dig Dug: Digging Strike, ect. Plus it has the best Metroid game ever: Metroid Prime Pinball. Happy

I agree with this 100%. The rumble cartridge really made it feel like you had a pinball game in your hands. I put a lot of hours into that game. I was also made fun of by a GameStop employee who asked me why I didn't want to buy Metroid Prime Hunters.

You should have said "Because Hunters is the worst Metroid experience ever."
