Does Nintendo release too few first party games for the average gamer?

Do they release less because of their quality assurance? Or because of their small development team?

Should they expand their franchises, or exploit under-utilized franchises more?

I say they should focus a little more on under-utilized franchises or frachises that are pretty much non-existent, like Kid Icarus and Pikmin.  How many years has it been now since people have been asking for a Kid Icarus sequel?

When it comes to the big names, less is more, for quality purposes.  I don't mind waiting for the latest Zelda/Mario/Metroid as long as they remain amazing.

It's definetely resources, they have teams dedicated to franchises and then smaller teams. That's why they need SEGA to make F-Zero and Namco to make Starfox. What they really need to do is to have a company like Rare that can put out lots of Nintendo like games.

They sort of dropped this second party approach in favour of 3rd parties and if wii had had similar specs to the competition, it would have worked. In the case of having to make specific versions for lower powered hardware, they got caught out. Bring back the second parties I say.

The latter. Come on, Nintendo! Bring back Kid Icarus, Pilotwings, Wave Race, Stunt Race FX, Star Fox, F-Zero, and Yoshi's Safari!

They've always been slow though, the only saving grace is that usually the games have been worth waiting for.

True. I remember a mall article in EGM about one of the hadow partners Nintendo used to make game outright (and receive no credit). It wasn't just Nintendo, but other companies that used thoe devs as well.

If Ninty sprinkled out some of their licences to the third parties it would probably engender more support for their platform as well (from those developers).

Hey can someone explain to me the appeal of a Kid Icarus return? I mean, how many people have fond memories of the two games that did come out? Did it do anything unique that would be worth reviving.

I'm not sure if it really did anything unique.  It was just a really well done and polished game.  Great music and graphics for the time.  Very surreal too, particularly once you reached the Sky World.   And that's what I think would be worth reviving.  Nintendo games, in my book, have always been at their best when they're avoiding anything realistic and are aiming for unique, heavily stylized, fantasy worlds.  The Mario series does it.  The Zelda series does it. Even Metroid does it, though with a more mature sci-fi theme.

And for two games Icarus did it.  They took Greek Mythology and just pushed it into a fantasy direction (whereas God of War would later do it in a more mature and realistic direction).  If Nintendo once again took that setting and gave it a light hearted fantasy setting I think it would be fantastic.

Sorry to hear that, bugs.

The first time I played it was on VC too, and I enjoyed it. It repeatedly kicked my ass, though.

Kid Icarus actually got better as you played it.  Really until you made it to the Overworld (the second stage) the game really doesn't feel like anything special.  Once you get there though everything clicks.  By that time you've got a special weapon or two, and you've earned enough money to buy special items.  Those things really add to the fun.

Kid Icarus was a "Should've been there at the time" game.  I bought it on VC and felt the magic was gone.  Maybe I'm just not hardcore enough any more.

Not Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition, but Umbrella and Darkside Chronicles
