How did you feel about Pikmin guys, because this game owes A LOT to that game. I prefer it personally.

Pikmin got old for me.  Or rather Pikmin 2 did. I never played the first.

I think this game is better, there are actual characters and houses and towns and things to hook you in. Pikmin was very focused on getting some items. This game is more rounded with lots of stuff to do. It nails what its aiming for, an ever expanding kingdom.

One of the things that I think will hold my interest a little more is that there seems to be more of a story and some more characters in this.  Pikmin just had it's set-up storyline and then you just take it from there.

I only played Pikmin 1 not 2, but it was level based and you just sort of collected things. I've only played an hour or so of LKS because I want to save it for my SDTV. So far its presentation and charm are off the charts if you appreciate games like Harvest Moon, Animal Crossing et al. It also has a more cohesive world and is sort of like a little rpg where you use pikmin like gameplay to acheive your goals.

I liked the first Pikmin more than Pikmin 2. It was shorter,  and felt more like a puzzle game to me than its sequel. Pikmin 2 was more of a dungeon crawler/RTS. I don't think of them as the same game.

Interesting. I've avoided 2 for years, but may pick up the new play version like in a year or something if its cheap. I never heard that it was like that. I thought the main differences were trashing the time limit, making a longer game and adding multiplayer? Most reviews say that they improved it a lot.

I guess it depends on what you want from the gameplay. I preferred the simple puzzle-like nature of the original. The time limit was a big part of the fun, IMO.

I didn't mind the time limit, it felt like going to bed each day and putting your pikmin safely away for the night. I didn't much to complaint about other than the length of the game. It was about 7 hrs.

I'll admit I haven't read any of the reviews, just watched a few trailers and saw some screenshots... but I still can't see what the hype is about. Looks like a mediocre RPG with kiddie graphics, maybe some good music and quite expansive lands, that's about it.

Why do you say that Yarco?

It was a short game, but I has high replay value. I probably put 20+ hours into it. I kept trying to beat the game in fewer and fewer days. I read on gamefaqs that you can beat the entire game in 9 days, but I never could.

both pikmins are among my favourite games of all time.  i think raven was referring to the fact that pikmin 2 has caves which are a little bit like dungeons as well as the garden environments of the first game, however the gameplay is not all that different in how you approach your quests in the caves and in the open environments.  the two extra pikmin varieties add some variety to the puzzles and the gameplay so i thought they were a welcome addition.  the lack of time limit wasn't much of an issue since the time allocation in the first game was pretty generous (even in my first playthrough I finished it in under 15 days which is about half the time you have).  the first pikmin is a really short game, i think that would be my one major complaint, and they addressed that by making the second game much larger (also added a whole bunch of challenges outside of the main game mode) so i really appreciated that.

i think the only aspect of the original which they couldn't improve upon, and in which the sequel is weaker, is the plot.  the first game is a tale of survival.  you land on this alien planet and you need to fix your ship within 30 days to get back to your home and your family or you die.  there is a sense of urgency in that, and the way in which the story is told through olimar's journals is just beautiful and heartfelt.  the second game is simply a treasure hunt.  you go back there because your company went bust so you scavenge for things to sell and make money.

gg it's pretty safe to say if you've enjoyed the first one you will find a lot to like in pikmin 2.

You beat Pikmin under 15 days on your first time through? GASP It took me 28 days to beat it on the first try. I must suck at the game then. LOL

I probably should clarify. I do like Pikmin 2 a lot. It is a great game. I just enjoyed the original more.

Oh yeah, its just one of those games that looks so similar to the first that I don't feel the need to buy it quickly and here in the UK the price has never dropped, it became rare and more expensive even.

I dont think I will get Boom Blox 2 for a while either, there are over 300 levels in the first game, I must have 30+ levels still to beat.

i know what you mean.  it happened with a lot of the games that were released late on the gamecube.  the first game was one of the few things that surprised me and brought me a lot of gaming joy last generation so i got the second one soon after release for about 27-30 quid i think which was the cheapest i could find.

speaking of unfinished games ... did you finish world of goo?  i've fallen in love with the game all over again and i think it's my favourite game so far this generation.  2D Boy said they will not make a sequel because they don't like how ideas are often ran to the ground by developers.  for fuck's sake it's the most brilliant game i've played in ages, just give the people more ... what's wrong with that?

i don't know how, it was one of those rare occurrences.  i normally take much longer to get through a game than most people with gaming experience

Hopefully they'll release the last level - The Moon later on WiiWare.  It's available on the PC, so the work has been done.  They just couldn't get it to fit due to size restrictions.

Even if they don't do a sequel I'm confident these guys could come up with an equally good game.  A game that smart isn't just a lucky one-hit wonder.  2-D Boy has talent.  And they've tasted success thanks to WiiWare so I'm sure they're going to be back one way or another.

i bought the game on steam even though i had it on my wii in hope that there would be user created levels and maybe added content etc.  wow, so that has a new set of levels added to it?  i can't wait to get to it, even though i enjoy playing with the wiimote more.

you can say that again about 2D Boy talent.  i still find it hard to get around my head how just the two of those guys (with one more doing the translation to wii code if i'm not mistaken) did everything to do with the game, including the music.  the have my full support for whatever they choose to do in the future.

I may be wrong about that so don't quote me.  The PC version was going to get The Moon, that was part of the reason it was $5 more than the Wii version.  But now I'm reading other things and the Moon may have been dropped completely.  Not sure.  I can't find anything that says for sure.  You'll have to ask someone with the PC version.  Let me know if you find out though.

And now we bring you back to your regularly scheduled discussion about LKS.

So more LKS.

Wow. LOL. Wow. Nice touch. The Pikmin comparisons are starting to fade away. While the game owes its basic gameplay structure to Pikmin, much in the same way Dead Space owes its design to RE4; the game is giving hints now that it's much more.

I started getting quests and beat this cow boss which freed some land up and the next day... well if you played Okami and remember the Kamiki village celebration 10 hrs in then you'll love it. Ticker tape was floating across the sky and littered across the village, there was celebratory music in the air, the little guys were dancing about. But LOL, there was a dark side too. My little guys had a massive funeral pye and were burning the bosses gigantic head on top and they all had on pagan like masks LOL It was so awesome I had to turn it off so I could do it again on an SDTV.

Also, it's a persistent world with a home base, so its not level based like pikmin accessed by menus. It feels like a proper RPG type world. And Howser, wow what a little bastard, the game has gone from happy smiles to WORLD DOMINATION lol!

I also started digging up hot springs to throw your troops into to recoup. So cool.

Played it on SDTV, unfortunately what I've noticed is their choice to use excessively strong lighting. You know when you look directly at a lightbulb, at the corners of your eyes you get that sort of weird ghost image sort of thing. Or when you look at the sun? Well alot of the characters have this oversaturated light effect which gives the game a very soft focus look, where it would be clearer and sharper without it. There is an option to turn down the brightness but it changes everything and not just the specific areas where they have supplied this lighting. It's like walking around Scrooge McDucks money vault with flood lights reflecting off all the gold.

Still it looks pretty nice and gives it this fairytale look.

The game itself is ridiculously addictive. You get more cash which gives you more options as to what to build and why, who to convert. It's funny too, this preist appeared and said that God would punish me if I didn't build him a church, and if God didn't he would. LOL

I made some carpenters and started building stuff. I found the second boss, he was quite hard. I also noticed that unlike Pikmin where you can pluck out new troops, your populace is limited and to get more workers you need to build new houses and that is not cheap and there are a limited number of houses so take care of your citizens.

There is a beach where sometimes dead guys wash up on the beach ressurected.

I fought the second boss, whoa, quite difficult. Oh and I just heard that you can marry off citizens at the church, but your advisor doesn't know the benefits. Baby workers hoooooooooooooooooooooo!!

And just when i thought it would start to get difficult to call your troops, I bought a podium to act like a little dictator. Awesome.

Vooks-review

"Little King’s Story is a really great game. If the game was a person and that person went to a dinner party, everyone would want to sit next to them, because they’d have so much character. It’s a storybook adventure with a text-book execution. Every part of design comes together wonderfully; the combined style of sound and visuals, the open-ended possibilities of game-play in all of its many facets, the characters, humour and the rather deep philosophies behind them all. The constant growth of your kingdom in scale and grandness is perpetually rewarding. It is long and it can be very challenging (if you’re new to games, I’d recommend the easy setting. I died a fair bit on normal!), and that is a good thing, because the play remains fresh throughout. It’s thoroughly original despite some obvious inspirations, taking the good parts and making them its own. I sincerely hope that this game does well, because it certainly deserves to."
