It starts this February.
My predictions for 2011:
- You will hear NOTHING from Microsoft. They sold through to retailers 8 million Kinects, there are a lot fo Kinect games in development to support that. They are done for hardware at least for this year. Recent reports have them getting revenue of $1 billion USD from XBL (subscriptions and sales), so they have no incentive to keep moving. Look also for evidence their push of Gears into the 4th Quarter.
- Sony is having tremendous success with the PSP in Japan, but faltering with the PS3 (in Japan and elsewhere). They are getting a new CEO, so for me other than feeling that the PSP2 will launch in 2011 I have no idea what they are doing. The PSP2 has been in develpoers hands since before E3, so you'd think it would come out in 2011, maybe they will launch in the west and wait for a Monster Hunter reason to launch it in Japan later.
- Nintendo has the 3DS obviously, but they will be cautious and continue to support the DS in case the 3DS misses the mark with the mass-market (because of the price). They have said they will push to bring previously unreleased titles to the West and that is a low-risk strategy to keep things going. Nintendo owned the top ten sold in Japan last year, but the DS and Wii have slipped considerably in Japan and the west. They could play it safe (which would be stupid) and go the Wii HD route, but I expect them to have their next home console out by Black Friday, and I don;t think it will be branded as "Wii" at all.
Did not the GBA and GC get released within the year they were announced (2001)?
EDIT: They announced it at Spaceworld August 2000 and released it in November 2001. Nintendo World has a Day 3! They could still announce it.
Even if they announce the console new console this day, that would still mean it will not be released until 2012 if we go by your data Aspro.
2011 = 3DS
2012 = Super Wii
If past performance is an indicator of future results, then yes.
EDIT: (But then we do live in strange times, I mean the console cycle this time is already distorted).
I think Nintendo can still squeeze the last bit of juice out of the Wii before moving on, but I do think they'll launch the next console in 2011.
Yeah, the cycle is definitely distorted. This will be the 360's sixth year, which never happens. I certainly don't see Nintendo releasing a new console this year. The new Zelda and 3DS is what they're gonna use for the holiday season. Yeah, I know they did that with the Wii and Zelda back in 2006, but not this time. 2012 looks to be the magic number for NIntendo's home console release.
Ravenprose said:Wii HD in 2012 at the earliest.
So you are alive!
We will not see a new console generation because we it will be penciled in for 2013.
When will the next generation of consoles start? I personally don't expect a new console till 2012. There's seems to be too much money in this gen, with development and perphials like Move and Kinect that were just released. I don't think the gaming companies are leaping at the chance to release something right away. But if they did, who would be the first out of the gate? Nintendo and Microsoft seem to be enjoying great success with their consoles at the moment. Sony can't even bring the costs of their current console down to make it appealing to a lot of consumers. How costly would a PS4 be?
What are your predictions? I'm sure DLC and microtransanctions are here to stay. What about achievements/trophies? Will Nintendo adapt something like that? What do you see happening or think willl happen for next gen.?
