Anyone here a fan of New Orleans? I could tell you stories that would make the whoriest whores blush a deep crimson. Exploring the Garden District, the French Quarter, Lafayette Cemetary and Bourbon Street, with the likes of Christopher Rice and some former members of MTV's Real World... Good times, good times! Debauchery aside, the one thing that always reminds me of those fine days is Cajun food, and the one thing I use in my daily life to give my dishes that Cajun flavor is 'Slap Ya Mama' Seasoning. Perfect blend of White Pepper, Red Pepper and Garlic; I use it in EVERYTHING! I throw it in my scrambled eggs. It goes GREAT with Chicken and especially Fish. These days I can only mail order this spice to my home, rather than make the time to go to Louisiana, and this is the place I go to, to do just that!

Okay, my promotion is for the Sansa Clip MP3 Player.  These things are small, rugged and generally satisfying to own.

You can get a 1 GB for about $20.  Your Ubuntu or PC sees it as a storage device, so you don;t have to worry about any software, you just drag your files right on there.  It automatically sorts different types of files, like Audible books or podcasts.  It has a speed adjustment for podcasts, so you can speed them up if you want.

But most of all, it's damn rugged.  I'm washed mine in a washing machine twice, dropped it hundreds of times, it still works great.  And, as the name suggests, it comes with a little clip so you can clip it to any part of your clothing (like the back of your collar if you need to keep it out of the way).

AND CHEAP! Small too, about 50mm tall, 30mm wide, 10mm high.

Yeah, I think I got introduced to the Sansa brand by you.  I'd prefer a "30 second" button for skipping, but after a while I got used to their system.

I have to add, that the clip part actually did break off, but it's not big deal.  Also, I use it on average 12-13 hours a day 365 days a year (and it includes an FM radio).

I've been using these for years.  I can't run without them.  In fact, I refuse to.

What it is: It's a personal GPS that is able to measure the distance you have traveled more accurately than a regular pedometer (becuase it uses GPS rather than a step counter).  It's an invaluable tool for measuring your speed as well (as you can use it in real time).

It makes what would ordinarily be a dull pastime (walking or running) more like a game.  It keep you motivated to keep going on a tough day, becuase you can see that you may only have a little more to go before you get to the next mile (or whatever other goal you have set for yourself).

You can also use it for cycling -- or just wakling around town.

You can upload your data to a web site and juxtapose it over a sattelite image or map.  Or just upload your running data so you have a log of your improvement over time.

Any of the Garmin ones are good, the more you pay the more features you get.

If you are thinking of starting running for your improved physical or mental health, a personal GPS is a great gimmick to keep you interested -- especially if you have a gamer's personality.
