Okay, I'm on the verge of buying an Xbox 360 Slim 4GB. The $199 price is sooo tempting. I really can't think of any reason not to get this model. Yeah, I know it doesn't have a real HDD, so online play will be extremely limited, but, as most of you know, I don't care about online play at all; I'd certainly never pay for XBL anyway. I would like the option of downloading demos and maybe buying the occasional XBLA game (Lara Croft). I assume this can be done with the 4GB flash memory? Info seems to be a bit sketchy in that regard. Hrm Yeah, I really should just pony up the extra $100 for the 250GB model, but it reallly seems like overkill for me, and I can use that extra cash to buy some new games. I checked Amazon, and they are selling the separate HDD for $104, so I could always upgrade later for about the same price.

So, watcha guys think? Good idea or bad?

Awesome. There's a huge number of games you can pick up for cheap nowadays, so the 100 bucks you're saving with the 4Gb will be well spent on games. Besides, you can definitely look for an upgrade further down the road, if you feel you need it.

Here's what I would REALLY consider though:

  • You can spend $199.00 and get a 360 where you can't INSTALL anything, having to run everything off the disc, taxing the hardware more, to the point where you may have to replace it sooner than...
  • A $299.00 360 where you can install EVERYTHING, taking all the burden off the hardware, extending the systems life.
  • (Exaggerated) If you have to buy a $199.00 system more than once due to it breaking, this costs MORE than just buying ONE $299.00 system.

Just my $.02!

^ Cool. Thanks for looking those file sizes up for me.  Looks like I could fit quite few XBLA games and game saves on the 4GB. How big is Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, Leo?

Those are valid points on getting the HDD model, and is something I've thought about; but the Wii doesn't install games, and it works fine. Granted, durability wise: Nintendo hardware >>> MS hardware.

  • Raziel and Kain Character Pack: 151.61 MB
  • All the Trapping Challenge Pack 1: 82.36 MB
  • A Hazardous Reunion Challenge Pack 3: 101.54 MB

...Not that I'm downloading right now or anything...  Nyaa

Thanks leo! I figued it would have a pretty big file size on that game. Looks like it'll fit, though, which is good!

If it's the disc drive that breaks down from much use then surely it's not that expensive to fix/replace?

Besides, having a disc drive break on you due to use is not nearly as common as one of the evil hardware malfunctions (that are covered on the 3 year warranty anyway).

For you hampster it's the way to go. All those old school arcade games are waiting for you and none of them take up much space.

I got a used 20 gig HDD at Gamestop for $60.  I've had it for over three years with no problems.
