I remember playing an AitD game on the PS1. The second one I believe. It had a great atmosphere, but its combat controls sucked, and some puzzles were stupidly cryptic. But what i hated the most was its cheap-assness with bullets. Fuck! I would be happy when finding a pack of 10 or so bullets, only to remember that all fucking weapons were double and triple barrelled. Assholes.

Who fires a triple-barrel shotgun anyway?

Doom on PS1 is my favorite horror game. The way they did the lighting and the creepy music with the baying sheep and baby cries in the background was creepy as hell in 1995.

I don't know anything about the PC horror scene. I know games like Doom were scary as hell to me back in the day. I played the original Alone in the Dark, interesting in a museum piece sort of way, not in a its a good game kind of way. All FMV games SUCK, don't bother.

Oh yeah. Doom had me freaking out. Very tense game that one. Alone in the dark  was really good when it came out - there were two sequels. Probably would have a better rep if someone would have done a good remake. And the Gabriel Knight FMV was I think above a lot of the  FMV games that were released. Even if you find the cutscenes too cheesy there is a strong adventure game there.

I like the setting for nightmare creatures - another game that needs a remake.

Hey, I played Doom and Quake when I was very young and didn't find them scary at all! Nyaa
Maybe it was because i'd already been traumatised by The Fly and thus had built up a resistance, though.

Silent Hill and RE toa  much lesser extent were quite scary, though!

the only thing scary about quake was having to vomit every 15 minutes or so because of the motion sickness it caused me Sad

Yay, scary games o/

I have to admit, most of them are on my "to play" list but I already played:

- Friday 13th on Amstrad. It was definitely not a good game. Music was ok for this time, there was an attempt of 3D ISO but the gameplay was kinda lame. Globally the game was not really scary, but 3 details were able to scare the little 8 year old me: the scream when someone was killed, the hair standing up on the head on your character and, most than all, that stupid screen that would appear totally randomly!

I think it made me cry the first time I saw it Sad

- Maniac mansion:
Ok, it was not supposed to be a scary game. But the atmosphere was weird and made me uneased. The mad scientist didn't helped much either.

- Alone in the dark:
It took me a lot of time to even understand what to do in the first room. And, as you can guess, a lot of death. I don't remember finishing it, it was already an oldie when I first played it and I was in college when my computer was at my parent's home so I think I just didn't find time to play it. Will have to try it again

- Resident Evil:
I played the first at a friend's home. Of course we were playing in the dark (actually, I was playing, he was looking) and I jumped a few times. The dogs breaking out the windows, the leechers and all the zombies... I even screamed once (don't remember why exactly) that made my friend's mother rush into his bedroom asking "What are you doing to her!!!!" Good memories ^^. Now I'm a huge fan of the series, still need to buy 2 games and I will make a resident-evil o-thon <3

- Silent hill:
Only played the first one but it scared me to hell. Graa I hated this stupid radio and early in the game theses tiny monsters looking like child! That remind me that I have to order Silent hill: shattered memories, it's out today in Europe o/

- Phantasmagoria:
I played it at my ex-BF's place. Never understood him, he had a lot of scary games but he was too afraid to play them ^^. The game was not really scary, mostly gore and the cut-scene were sometime so ridiculous that it was funny/gore. Yeah, I can't say it was scary except maybe the cradle scene :/

- Alien Vs predator:
Yeah, it's not a scary game, but when you play Marines in a dark room and you hear the bip bip bipbip bipbipbipbipbiiiiiiip. You're all "What! where! fucking alien get out of here!!!!!" And you empty your gun on!.. a stupid door wick keep on closing/opening. When you finally relax a little, still swearing at the door, a stupid fucking alien just fell in front of you!!!!! GRAAAAAH!

More later I need to work a little Nyaa

Oh yeah, thanks for the reminders. I played the first two Alone in the Darks, really great games. And Eternal Darkness 3 times through and Cursed Mountain. Also this vampire graphic adventure back on PC that I cannot remember the name of.

Oh yeah, played Dead Space and Bioshock, dont know how something as colourful as Bioshock gets called a horror. Its like Rapture might as well be called candyland.

Mekere isn't Shattered memories out on the 5th march?

Without seeing any pics I can tell you that it's not, Vampire the Masquerade is a first person RPG, not a graphical adventure.

And yet she expects me to believe her Shattered Memories release date! Nyaa

Gameplay.co.uk and Game uk both say the 5th of March. Unless its not getting a simultaneous euro launch. Which would annoy me considering the games UK devs.

The earliest I remember being introduced to horror games is when I saw someone playing a Splatterhouse 1 arcade cabinet at a water park in my town. I was about six years old. I wasn't really frightened by it, though I had a fascination for its sick imagery and art direction. I recreated what I saw in several drawings and journal entries at school, which, in retrospect, was probably the beginning of my downfall there. I later went on to rent Splatterhouse 2 for my Genesis, which was awesome.

My first horror survival game was Resident Evil 2 when it was released for the Nintendo 64. Some say it's too dated now, but my favourite RE game is probably the RE: Director's Cut. REmake is also sweet.

My first Silent Hill game was Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams for the Xbox, which is disappointing, since it's still the best, in my opinion, and I haven't been able to enjoy the others quite as much because of it. My second favourite is Origins, which I bet a lot of people are ready to disagree with me on. If I ever get around to it, I was planning on assembling a small team and creating a Silent Hill themed FPS using the Genesis3D engine.

I've tried Fatal Frame 2 and 3, but I haven't got a chance to actually sit down and play through them, so my judgment is still pending.

More recently, I'm a big fan of the Condemned games. I own them both, and they're great.

Silent Hill 2. PS2.  Bought it used, took it home, turned off the lights, played it for 90 minutes or so, got too scared and returned it, figuring there is no way I could ever finish a game that scary.

It may be, the name sounds familiar. Whats the exact name of the game? Anyone have boxart or screens?
