Tell me to get back to rewriting this site so it's not horrible on mobileSega wouldn't have messed up the Saturn, they would make a game built for 3D like the PS1 was.
1. Sony would have delayed the release of the PS3 for an extra year.
2. Nintendo probably would have said "fuck it" to Connectivity.
3. Atari would have installed some software standards and would have continued to dominate the console market. And even better home consoles would still have wood paneling on it!!!

That would have put them in a terrible position. I think they would have been better off annexing Blu-ray and releasing a year earlier to combat 360.
Wood pannelling would be awesomely retro though

I think they would have been in a much better position. The PS2 was still doing very well at the time and if what was recently reported was true, Final Fantasy XIII could have come out on it, assuring that the system still would have had killer games coming out on it (along with God of War 2 which came out the February after the PS3 launched). Plus that extra year gives them time to lower the cost by about $100 which then would have eliminated about 90% of the negative press that they got when the system launched.
And yes, wood paneling for life. In fact I think I'll mod my Wii so that it has wood paneling.

If history played out in exactly the same way, only with Sony launching a year later at a reduced price, the Wii still would have run away with the market and had a years headstart, and 360 would have had 2 years headstart.

The Wii would have run away with the market either way. However, the supply constraints that the Wii went through during its first year ultimately would still have been there so its not like the Wii would have sold even more. And the PS3 could have launched right at the time that MS was dealing with the public fallout over the RROD. It would have been the perfect time to launch of a console and potentially would have hurt MS even worse had they chosen to hammer that (and that's pretty what Sony likes to do).
Yes the other consoles would have had a bigger head start, but ultimately that doesn't really matter anymore since the lifespans are no longer the same. The next generation of gaming seems less likely to see all companies start at the same time. As long as they are making money nothing else really matters, and the PS3 was hemoraging money for Sony. That extra year could have changed a lot for them. They could have streamlined a lot of production during that time and kept the costs down signficantly.
Yeah clearly Microsoft would have made sure RRoD would not rear it's ugly head.
As for Sony launching a year later then they already did I seriously doubt they would contemplate that. Third party support was already dwindling by the time they launched so another year and it'd practically be barren. I think they would have instead find ways to lower the initial price of the PS3 plus make it much easier to develop on which would probably mean ditching the Blu-ray player and Cell processor.

Agreed. What did this complicated cell processor even do that was so great? It seems like a lot of hype about not much.

Well like Blu-ray it was another piece of new tech that was to be featured in a whole range of other types of products. It could vary from being in high end products, having all processors running, to simpler products, by having fewer processors running. I'm not really sure how it caught on though but guesstimating I would say that it really didn't.

Blu-ray has a pretty highly visible reason for existance, its the next gen DVD. I have a cell processor built into a TV and it's almost like invisible technology. It hasn't given PS3 that huge edge that they proposed in the 2005 E3 press conference.
It's right up there with the emotion engine.

Yeah I think that would have killed them. 3rd parties would have left them for the 360 if they would have be launching so late. I figure microsoft and sony would have made a wii like arcade console sku and kept their higher end platforms. Sony cutting out whatever they could to get the price down. Probably scaling back the tech but still keeping blue ray.
If the platform holders could use a time machine and go back and rewrite history, in regards to changing or modifying their past (or current) consoles and handhelds, who do you think would do what?
I'm going to throw out the obvious one and say that Microsoft would make sure that the RROD wouldn't happen.
