As a lark I am going to transcribe an interview with Doug Lombardi from jsut before the Orange Box launched.

January 2008.

EGM: Ep One stuck closely to the HL2 formula, to the point fo being too similar. Ep 2 mixes things up. So what can we expect from Ep 3?

DL: ...the direction for the series can be charted against the direction from one to two.

EGM: Where will Ep 3 fall in the HL saga?

DL: Ep 3 will close this chapter of the game, but not the franchise.  Once Ep 3 is complete, we will basically have made what should have been called HL 3.

EGM: How will you deliver Ep 3?...

DL: We're giving that a lot of thought right now. History shows that almost every time we release a new product for the PC, we change the rules a little and try something new...

I find it refreshing how much candor is displyed here. The interview went on to talk about Portal and The Orange Box with a similar level of transparency.

The big deal I got from this was at Valve they considered the three episodes, combined, to be HL3.  I am wondering if they will make and release Ep 3 on the new engine a year before the next HL3.  I can;t see them just leaving that thread dangle before they move on.

My question for y'all is this. Are Valve in the Doom situation that id found themselves in (as Foolz talked about in the last podcast)?

Personally, I don't think Valve has room to move with HL. Non-military shooters (as much as I love and prefer them) just don't sell.

And where can they innovate?  I thought that Singularity would have been the perfect starting block for HL3 (manipulating time rather than gravity but not in the hokey, though appreciated, Timesplitters way.

I guess they could steal it, no-one would notice or care.

What could Valve offer to make HL3 worthwhile creatively? (It would sell multi-millions regardless).

Its Valve. Its Half-Life. It WILL BE incredible. This is like saying will the next Zelda game have new mechanics and ideas, of course it will.

I still think HL3 will have the portal gun.

It's going to sell like crazy (they have their own store to promote it through).

But where do they go conceptually?

Personally, I think their world is interesting enough that they can just make an amazing looking straight-forward FPS and get away with it critically (Even RAGE got many a "'gentleman's 'C'").

HL2 may be the first game I replay when I get a new PC. I loved the coastal sections.

Posting a thread about HL, and mentioning me in the second post? That's just asking for trouble.

Hmm... Thinking about how that just doesn't turn into Portal.

Obviously Vader did not think about it. Stop ruining his wet dreams with your cold hard logic.

Yes cause Portal is a FPS... oh wait no its not. Put a portal gun in a real action game and you have some crazy stuff. Imagine boss battles where you grab a car with the gravity gun, launch it through a portal to hit aweak spot on the boss that you normally wouldnt be able to hit. Crabheads coming at you and you creating a portal on the floor which sends off a 10 story building. Then you encounter enemies with their own portals, so they are teleporting all over the level trying to get you but you can use their portal against them just like they can use yours by shooting through it. This is nothing, the possibilities are endless. Even vehicles, you are in a chase driving full speed you are coming on a dead end wall. Instead of trying to stop and do a u-turn just shoot a portal ahead of you, one right next to it and you will pop out going the other direction at full speed.

Not bad. Sounds a little Darksidery.

But what about what Lombardi said up there ^.  That The three episodes comprised "what should have been called HL 3"?

I think they have to close out that set, and a good way to do that (and ease themselves into the new engine, while pumping demand) would be to release Ep3. about a year before going into the full HL3 game.

Hmmm, well I still think it could be done to promote the upcoming HL3. You know the first thing the internet will scream if they announce HL3, "Where's Ep 3?!"

And if Valve values the story (as indicated by his remarks) I can see them also wanting to close it out before moving on.

You make it a Steam exclusive for 6 months then a PSN timed-exclusive for 6 months on the consoles (since Valve seems to have some sort of sweetheart deal with Sony these days).

That was Episode 1. Episode 2 had a different ending.
