So Metroidvania denotes a combination of two completely different things? All Metroidvania games I've played have just been exactly like Metroid, so how exactly does Castlevania differ? (Genuine question, never played one.)

I assume Iga will ninja post soon. The original Castlevanias are action platformers. You go from left to right attacking monsters. Think Mega Man with a whip. Castlevania 2 was a bit different, more like Zelda 2 than Metroid though. SOTN was the first Metriod like Castlevania game.

I just want Nintendo reinvent a genre like they used to. Galaxy was the last time they came close to that. MP was the time before that. I want it to come from Zelda or Metroid.

Pikmin too? Smash?

It's a hard ask.

Yes, get it.

Absolutely Mario 64. And back in the day with Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Mario Kart, Smash.

Nintendo seem to invent, reinvent or define their own genres - Animal Crossing?

I played it on WiiU and let me put it like this: if you can put up with a game that isn't fun, but isn't so on purpose, then you'll like it.

I didn't like playing the game, but I did like the game.

1-D Metroid game.  Break all the rules!

That would actually be an interesting game design exercise.  Make a game where you and enemies can only move along one axis?

One of the Bit.Trip games was a shmup in which you could only travel over a set path.  I didn't play that one, but I did love the early entries in the Bit.Trip 'franchise'.

Nintendo also had Rareware kind of reinventing the First Person Shooter genre for consoles, with Goldeneye and Perfect Dark. The Big N and Rare were such a fucking FORCE back then...I've never seen anything like that again.

SupremeAC what is your Wii U handle? Why don't you let us add you as friends?

Rare were more prolific than Nintendo, they made the N64 worth owning more than Nintendo. I have rarely seen a single developer put out so many quality games during one gen.

  • Conker
  • Banjo Kazooie
  • Banjo Tooie
  • DK64
  • Goldeneye
  • Perfect Dark
  • Blast Corp
  • Jet Force Gemini
  • Killer Instinct Gold

  • Mickey's Speedway USA

I call ignorance to my defence  Happy  I'm assuming it'll just be SupremeAC, eventhough it shows my actual name on-screen for some reason.

edit: also, with how lacking both the WiiU library and my gaming time are, I doubt I'd notice if anyone tried to befriend me.  Sorrow times, these are  Sad

What is it that makes the news page so special, other then the fact that there's also a crapload of new news?

That's the place where we post our general (non-specific game) stuff, and do most of our daily conversing.

Well, the boards don't seem starved for replies either.

...

I'll see if I can get used to 'conversing'.  I've been posting on boards where the clouth of the posters aren't ever on while I am, plus that I tend to just check by for 10 minutes multiple times a day, which doesn't really lend itself well to actual conversions.

Whatever way suits you best is fine! There's no formal rules here AT ALL... As you've probably already seen we hardly stay on topic in the game specific topics too...

It's how this site was birthed for a start. And it has all the lastest news and most comments. The boards are more active because of E3 but usually the news page gets more activity.

Perhaps why Smash Bros graphics failed to impress:

From an artistic standpoint, when we’re looking at these high detail environments that we’re creating, we now have to go in and work on all of those little things, because as you can see, if you don’t put in the attention to detail they look flat and lifeless.
