I am playing through Eternal Darkness on the Gamecube right now, I am about 4 hours into it. I thought this community would have something to say about the game and I'd be interested in your thoughts about any aspect of it -- or Silicon Knights.

Why are there two threads about this? And why does Vader have 2 Metroid 2 reviews up?

I wanted to pick it up, but it's quite expensive for a used game over here.

I bought it when it came out because it looked interesting from the magazines I was reading.

Lead character looks a lot like Buffy -- that probably helped.

Mrs. Aspro played it at the time while I watched and I've got to say that neither of us were taken in by the insanity effects -- though I apprecitate their inclusion.  Particularly the camera tilt and sway that starts to kick in.

There are a lot of details in the game that I like -- like the animated skull floor in one small room, where the skulls are screaming -- or even the mythos itself, as with all the good stories in games you have the feeling that there is a huge backstory and you are peeling away small parts of it at a time.

The combat so far is very, very weak.  I'm assuming that will improve.  Modern checkpointing would have been nice too, but I'm not holding that against it since it is typical of the time it came from.

And that was your critical mistake.  And yes, it sucked.

I'm playing it on the Wii incidentally.  The game has progressive scan, which is nice, it has aged respectably in the graphics department.

So Silicon Knights made this, and I remember this game being quite well received.  At that time I did not know that they had made Legacy of Kain on the PS, so seeing ED as a debut I wondered how Silicon was going to follow up on having such a well received game.

I thought the Twin Snakes remake was a perfect soft landing for them -- though remaking a classic is tricky business if you are not the original studio.  I have not opened Twin Snakes yet, or know how it was received, but when you think about it the entire concept is a trip -- maybe not these days when you have FF coming out on the 360 and Square has made up with Nintendo -- but back then the idea of bringing a game from the previous generation (let alone one of the most heralded games of the time) to a cross-platform, with a Canadian developer -- weird.

From Wiki:
"Much like the original Metal Gear Solid, which received excellent reviews from critics, The Twin Snakes also received an 8.8 and 85 from Game Rankings and Metacritic,[12][13] respectively. IGN gave The Twin Snakes 8.5 out of 10, praising its superior graphics and likening the presentation to epic movies.[14]GameSpot gave it an 8.2 out of 10 or "Great" on their scale,[3]Eurogamer rated The Twin Snakes as 8 out of 10 and Gaming Age gave it a "A-" rating. American gaming magazine Game Informer gave The Twin Snakes a 9.25 out of 10, citing its improved gameplay and graphics, and also its faithful retelling of the original Metal Gear Solid story.[15]

Despite receiving generally favorable reviews, The Twin Snakes has also drawn criticism. According to GamePro, the game has a "flagging framerate and bouts of slowdown that occur when too much activity crowds the screen."[16] The new gameplay elements from MGS2 have also been criticized as unnecessary, as the level design is virtually unchanged from MGS1,[16] and even "spoil the challenge ... and completely ruin at least one boss battle."[17]

The January 2009 issue of Game Informer placed The Twin Snakes at #11 on their list of "Top 25 GameCube Games"."

I dont see the Twin Snakes as a SK game. They just so happend to remake a Konami game. It is not like REmake, it is the exact same game but with the MGS2 engine basically. They didn't even worry about balance issues that would come up with first person aiming.

Its fine though, its still MGS. It was great to see MGS done with GC graphics.

Yeah, that was odd too because they used the MGS2 engine (and it looked great from the screens) so why no MGS2 on GC?  They brought it over for the XB.

I just remembered that this game had some of the best Pro Logic II surround sound effects I had ever heard in a game. It really blew me away last gen. Happy

Sadly, that I don't recall the surround sound effects being as good in any other Pro Logic II enabled game since. Sad

I remember how much I liked the fact that you can play as the different characters -- yeah the gameplay itself does not vary but it would be weird if it did.  Maybe it could work.

So far the puzzles have been simple, or if they are not it is because they are completely abstruse -- you wanted me to stick that staff where?

I do like how short the individual levels are, but again, some checkpointing would help.  Anyway, when I get home tomorrow I'll tackle some more of it.  So far it's been fairly pleasant.

I quite like the combat, of course it's antiquated by todays standards but at the time it was an attempt to restrict your movement and such to make it a survival horror game. For instance, it took time to cast a spell and if anyone hit you before the chant completed you failed and had to try again. It became a constant battle to get space and position yourself against multiple enemies.

Agreed. Best sounding game I've seen without Dolby Digital or DTS outside of the PS2 MGS games. It made Pro Logic 2 seem almost as good as the real thing. It must be hard to pull that off, cuz it hasn't happened since.

If you don't play through three times you haven't really finished it anyway.
