2011 Game of the Year Awards!!
I did get to play most every game I wanted to play from 2011 except aa few that are still sitting on my shelg but I doubt they will impact these results. I got the 360 really late in the year so I didnt play much from it, no Gears 3 yet.
Misc Awards
Best Graphics: Crysis 2, I haven't played it yet but I hear it is so I assume when I do play it I will agree with my pick.
Runner up - Uncharted 3

Runner up - Batman Arkham City
Best Music: Batman Arkham City, sounds like a movie score and fits perfectly into the musical themes Batman has had in the past.
Runner up - Zelda Skyward Sword
Best New IP: Outland, Not many choices for me this practically wins by default.
Runner up - LA Noire
Most Disappointing Game: LA Noire, I still think its really good but it really could have been special
Runner up - Mercenaries 3D
Best Downloadable Game: Outland, An incredible platformer, action game hybrid with a genius gameplay mechanic
Runner up - Bastion
Best Voice Acting: Portal 2, BRILLIANT, the funniest game I have ever played, mostly due to Stephen Merchant.
Runner up - Batman Arkham City
Best Multiplayer: Uncharted 3, an improvement on U2 online in every way, a stacked mode that will keep me playing for a long time
Runner up - Mortal Kombat
Best Developer: Nintendo EAD, Not only did they make Zelda, this year they also pumped out Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7. Still the best in the biz.
Runner up - Rocksteady

Runner up - WB Games
Genre Awards
Best Action/Adventure game: Its the GOTY winner...
Best Platformer: LittleBigPlanet 2, a beautifully made game that allows for endless creation, a game that will never end.
Runner up - Super Mario 3D Land
Best RPG: Dark Souls, not much of an RPG but it gets labled that so here it goes, a great sequel and another unforgettable experience.
Runner up - Skyrim
Best Puzzle Game: Portal 2, I just put this here so I can reward Portal 2 for being awesome.
Runner up - Portal 2 again
Best Fighting Game: Mortal Kombat, what a reinvention, this is how you bring back an ailling franchise!
Runner up - Marvel vs Capcom 3
Best FPS: I will pass for now as I am sure it will be one I have not played yet, I refuse to choose CoD MW3.
Game of the Year 2011
I have never had such a hard time choosing a GOTY like this one. It is practically a tie but since I had to choose one I simply went with the one I had the most fun playing. I was playing both Zelda and Batman a second time. When I played Batman I did not enjoy new game + as much and saw how short the main campaign is. I still love the challenge maps and the first playthrough was incredible but I saw what some others were complaining about. When I replayed Skyward Sword I was... happy, I think that is the best way to put it. Even though a have a huge list of stuff that I don't like about Skyward Sword it is still Zelda, it is still that perfect mix of gameplay that I want from my games. So even though I do believe Batman is the better constructed game, which why I scored it higher, I enjoyed my time with Zelda more. Skyward Sword is another unforgettable adventure through some beautiful locations and includes a control scheme unlike no other.
Runner Up: Batman Arkham City, as I stated above I think this game is excellent and is every bit as worthy of GOTY as Zelda. The best use of a license in a game ever. Tomorrow I may change my mind again on GOTY so who knows.

What about the back-tracking?
Ok, weird time to bring this topic back up. The backtracking is ok cause there is something new everytime you backtrack.
Witcher 2 had by far the best graphics last year. It still has the best graphics.

Okay. I only ask because I heard an explanation of it today and it sounded terrible. I was reading your thread as I had only just finished my own 2011 deliberations.

I guess on the PC. It is beautiful but a game like Uncharted impresses me much more. It has much more to do with how interactive the game world is, in Witcher it is all very static, you character just walks around this present land with little to no events going on. A million games do that. In Uncharted the enviornment is constantly moving, a ship is turning while you are inside and water is gushing in, its a whole different level of technical achievement.
2011 was a nice bounce back year for me as I finally got a steady job and got a 360. I had my PS3 all year and a big chunk of the year was spent playing games from 2010 that I missed. The 360 came in too late in the year to really have much an impact on my lists. I bought a ton of games but many at a discount price. Before we begin you can check out my 2010 year in review to see how it compares. The amount of games I completed went down from 56 in 2010 to 48 in 2011 but my hours grew by about 200 hours. I think I played more in 2011 than any year since we started keeping track. Lets break this thing down and see how much money I spent, I'm scared.
Games and consoles bought/received in 2011:
PS3
Wii
DS
3DS
Moble
PC
GC
360
Games bought/recieved: 107 (WTF?! I am crazy)
Estimated Cost (what I paid): $1,900
Yeah I spent a lot this year, I went a little nuts. Last year I just spent $400, amazing what a job does to the budget.
Games I beat in 2011 in order of my rating:
First Time Completions:
Average Score: 8.0
Games Previously Beaten:
Total Games Beaten: 48
Platform Breakdown:
Pathetic showing by the Wii, I finished more NES games than Wii games. PS3 storms back to #1 after being sidelined last year.
Genre Breakdown:
As always A/A leads by a ton. This year I got some RPGs in so that is good. Nice showing by FPS as I dont play many, I didnt play any last year. No strategy or adventure games this year. Platforming again has a big showing, love how big the genre is this gen.
Franchise breakdown:
Wow this just shows the amount of variety in franchises I played this year. Last year I had 11 Sonic games, now the leader has only 4. I did not do a series playthrough in 11 which is probably why this list is so small. I cant believe CoD is on the list. For the second year in a row RE is non existant which is weird cause I play those games a lot, that will change as this year.
Publisher Breakdown:
As usual Nintendo is going to be at or near the top and this year it tops the list though many of those were old games. Sony had an impressive year. Again a lot of variety but the usual Japanese companies head the list for me.
Next post will be my GOTY awards.
