Yes folks, a new Level-5 masterpiece awaits us. Put aside your pining for a new Dark Cloud or a Level-5 created Dragon Quest game. Before us stands greatness in handheld form.... FANTASY LIFE!!!

Q: What is Fantasy Life?

A:  You means besides an epic tale of awesomeness, deep fried in awesome grease, and served with a side of awesome sauce?  First take a classic jRPG. Add the pedigrees of character artist Yoshitaka Amano and pre-suck Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu, and a support staff made of Brownie Brown (old Secret of Mana devs). Now mix in the daily life routines and personal customizations of Animal Crossing with a robust job/class system. Sprinkle in local and online multiplayer and you get Fantasy Life!

Q: So exactly what do you do?

A: Not to be vague, but almost anything you want. The game can be played as an RPG or a Life Simulator. If anything the game takes a lot of queues from Dragon Quest 9. There's a main story in the game, and that will take anywhere from 12 to 15 hours to complete. However it's also packed with tons and tons of sidequests which are really the meat and potatoes of the game. To experience all of these, you'll need to invest some time checking out all of the different jobs. These quests can be completed solo, but many of them will be a lot easier if you group of with some of your friends with the game's online multiplayer (which according to the reviews is quite smooth and easy to get into). Friends who have focused on jobs that you haven't will make exploring the full world and completing the quests much easier.

Q: You mentioned a job system. What jobs are available?

A: Fantasy Life is interesting because most of the jobs are in fact jobs, or rather "lives". You can play the game entirely as one, but you'll probably want to switch off between different ones as situations call for it. Any skills you learn in one life will automatically roll over and be available to you even once you switch, though there are a few Special skills that remain exclusive to the current job you're using. Here's the list:

  • Treasure Hunter
  • Shop Owner
  • Student
  • Chef
  • Beast User
  • Carpenter
  • Pilot
  • Fisherman
  • Steel Worker
  • Tailor
  • Alchemist
  • Mercenary
  • Mage
  • Farmer
  • Hunter
  • Mailman
  • Royal Soldier
  • Prophet
  • Dancer
  • Miner

Q: How are the early reviews?

A: Overall good, though there's a few rogue reviews that are dragging down the Metacritic 74 pts. Few notable US sites have reviewed the game yet, so who knows where the score will go. Here's a few select ones that will give you a good idea of the game's details:

Nintendo World Report - 8/10

NintendoLife - 8/10

Eurogamer - 6/10 - In the interest of fairness here's a cranky Eurogamer review. Worth noting that every other Eurogamer language site gave it a higher score.

Q: Anything you want to add for full disclosure?

A: This is actually a pretty old game as far as 3DS games go. It was launched in Japan a few years ago, and only just now made it to the West. And originally it was even being designed for the DS so it's not the best looking game on the system. It's still awesome even if it doesn't look great, and really if you care about graphics on a handheld system, let's face it you're a bitch.

Q: Why am I not playing this already?

A: Either you live in a region where it's not released yet, or you're a bitch. Possibly both.

I want to be a Dancer!

**...a Tiny Dancer because I AM a drama queen!**

Either that or I want to be a Steel Worker!

**...because I'd love to work me some Steel!**

This is not how full disclosure works. You need to post a list of the Kickstarter games you've supported and everyone you have ever had sex with. Or you could post your stance on misognyny in gaming instead.

I plan on getting it this week. I have no idea what life I'm choosing first. I think I will choose carpenter because it is different than what most are choosing.

I put my preorder money down on it a couple days ago. No idea where I'll start with it, but we'll see what catches my fancy. I'm actually going in knowing very little, so I think it'll be a good time.

I'm a Wizard!

I have to say: What a happy game this is! It has that lighthearted Level 5 style, but the Life system seems to be pretty robust.

Loving the Quest system so far!

Don't know why they say the 3D feels tacked-on. Especially in the cut-scenes, the 3D is --REALLY-- impressive!

Only problem is: I've been playing my consoles pretty heavily during the day, trying to get Twilight done and mixing some Shadow/Samurai Warriors in between. I play Fantasy Life before I go to sleep at night and I've been falling asleep pretty quickly. Not that it's boring at all, but it's so soothing, I immediately start to relax and before I know it, I'm out like a light!
