Ok... If you've managed to talk kill the red eyed demon knight and make it into the place behind him, you should leave the guy in there alone until you are at a much much higher level.  That guy is the hardest enemy in the game.

The only things that affect character tendency are when you kill innocent NPCs, or when you kill Black Phantoms.  Killing friendly NPCs shifts you towards black, and killing Black Phantoms shifts you towards white.  The only BPs that will shift you towards white are the Black Phantom versions of NPCs in the game, and the random people who invade your game as Black Phantoms.

There is some glitchy stuff with Ostrava, in that if you rescue him in either 1-1 or 1-2 without beating the boss of that world while you are there, he will spawn back in the next time you load the level, and he can get killed.  That isn't a problem with any of the other characters you can rescue though.  I find it odd that you were able to enter the room beyond the red eyed demon knight in 1-1, because to do that, you need a key from Ostrava.  Either from his corpse or from when he gives it to you in 1-4.

As for equipment, if you plan to play as a Royal/Mage type character, you definitely want that Crescent Falchion.  The blacksmith in 2-1 can upgrade it using Darkmoonstone which you find in World 4 by killing Crystal Geckos and Grim Reapers.

Miracles can be handy, I particularly like the 'Evacuate' miracle and the 'Cure' miracle.  You will at least want Cure for when you go into 5-2.  Rescuing Sage Freke and beating the boss of 3-1 is a great thing to do early in the game, because the spell that Freke teaches you when you give him the 'Doll Demon's Soul' is way better than the Soul Arrow.

I suggest watching YouTube walkthroughs of levels too.  I think there is a video for every situation in the game.

Also, I think the key to leveling up fast early in the game is learning how to survive in World 4, and beating 4-1 as early as you can.  It is hard as hell, but the enemies drop more souls there than anywhere else in the game.

I think that may well be what happened.  I rescued him in 1-1, then started the level again without beating the boss and took the upper path to clean out the knights and swordmen etc before going down the stairs to back track along the lower path to collect loot etc  That's probably how I picked up the key.  Does it matter in any meaningful way that I let him die?

I played some in 4-1.  I can negotiate the skeleton knights and the skeleton archers for the most part.  I went as far as that nasty looking axe-wielding troll guy but i got scared and went back to the nexus without starting a fight with him.

Thank you buddy, you gave me very valuable info.  Will see how I get on in 3-1 since I can't seem to find a safe way down in the tunnel in 2-2 and keep falling to my death

Oh... I'd save 2-2 for a later time.  The boss of 2-2 is an insane brute.  I'd recommend taking either 3-1 or 4-1.  The giant axe dude in 4-1 is easy to beat.  You can stay outside of his range and blast him with Soul Arrow until he dies.

i did 3-1 without too much trouble other than how spooked out i was the whole time.  rescued sage freke and learned the powerful spell but i can't use it much since it depletes my MP very quickly

now slowly and cautiously making my way through 4-1.  what do i have to do at that tree where the bird speaks to me?

Ah... you can drop shiny items at that tree and the crow will give you useful stuff.  The Demon's Souls wiki has a full list of stuff you can trade.(I have no idea how to paste links here, I get errors and weird garble every time I try.)

I have been playing a whole lot more of this game in the last couple of weeks without updating this at all so I thought I will take the chance to do so.

With rag's help to get started, the game soon got a whole lot more manageable, but you always, always have to treat it with respect or it will still hand your ass to you.  I have got to where I beat my last 4 or 5 bosses upon first attempt.  And I think with the recent addition of Yuria the witch I have all the helpful NPCs in the Nexus that I want.  I have killed the arch demons of worlds 2, 3 and 4 and have just the final levels of worlds 1 and 5 left.

I have also had several multiplayer experiences, some pleasant others less so.  Being invaded by another player as a black phantom is an experience that's hard to explain.  It happened to me twice and I got killed both times.  The first time it was purely my mistake, I panicked and rushed when I totally had him and ended up getting the stab from behind finishing move.  The second time was even worse and I don't know if it was a glitch or what.  I was invaded by a black phantom who was identical to the old monk's minion, but this was not in the old monk level.  Anyway the SoaB killed me, but not before killing my primeval demon (you only have so many of these every playthrough and i had no idea mine was there at the time because of black world tendency).  I felt seriously violated.

Blue phantom multiplayer is much more enjoyable.  It's your usual co-op kind.  I like putting my blue stone in front of a boss's gate and help somebody defeat the boss in their game.  I also played with a friend of mine who has the game.  It wasn't hard to arrange, I was on the phone to him and he saw my stone very soon after I placed it.

I am undecided about whether I would prefer to go on to new game + (start over again with everything being much stronger but keeping your character as he/she was at the end of the first playthrough) or starting over again as a new character.  There are benefits to each.  The game is so versatile that it would be great to play through it again in a completely different way.  Choose a different class, level up differently, find different strategies etc.  But on the other hand keeping my character I can learn more spells (since you can use a demon's soul just once there is a lot of opportunity cost since oftentimes Sage Freke, Yuria and even Urbain have something useful to teach you with the same demon's soul, so new game + would allow me to get more of those.

Overall, I think the game is great.  I will be playing it for a while still and I think I will remember it for years to come alongside old favourites like the Diablo games.

I bought this because Leo told me to.  Should I get to this game fast-ish while there is still some online presence or have I already missed out?

I think it's safe to say Demon's Souls will have an online presence until something else comes out like it...

...which will be never, so you're safe.

Besides, single player is worth it alone!

there is still a lot of online presence.  and the developers are supporting it some by doing things like the valentine's day world tendency event etc.  i think the game community is pretty active still.  Also even though it's essentially the same game offline, it's much more fun to play while connected.

you should definitely play it as it's a great game

^Thanks gents.  I'm mulling over whether to go to this or Star Ocean (PS2) after NMH, which should be this weekend.  If I have not finished Star Ocean 2 then it'l probably be Souls.
