Let's just say the game wouldn't be the same if it was Syphilis.
That is either the greatest clue of all time with the absolute worst.
Oops! It's supposed to be Sypha-less... Stupid auto-correct! 😎
Astalon: Tears of the Earth!
So! Good!
It's CastleVania 3: Dracula's Curse, but more MetroidVania-like with some rogue elements thrown in and even more surprises!

That is on every best modern metroidvania lists I've seen. I've been close to buying it at time, I need to pull the trigger.
I did have a few gripes though. The game did feel a little bit longer than it needed to be. This clock didn't about 40 hours, and I think it could have been pulled down to 30 easily. There's a couple subplots in the game that are just kind of there and at the conclusion of the game I can't really see how they improved it. Finally, the game did commit an absolute cardinal sin in my book. A new gameplay element was added specifically to the final battle. It took me awhile to grasp it and I ended up dying a lot and had to sit through the 20 second tutorial on how to use it every single time.
Finished Astalon! 100%'ed that b*tch! Up there with some of the best MetroidVanias!

Goddamn I need it.
Game 1: Disco Elysium - Dig the writing in this game a lot, and I like how reasonably flexible the skill checks were in terms of how they would swing quest lines and how you would progress quests forward, the story forward, and the stuff you couldn't do because of your decisions. I'm sure Tomas and his well read ass would have his criticisms of the writing, but I think it's sharp as fuck. I like the writers flexing their purple prose here. There is like an element of the ending that made me go "huh?", but otherwise I enjoy the game on a thematic level a lot. Even more so than Kentucky Route Zero. Crpgs became that much harder to tolerate their shitty combat. Normally I'd dunk on a game where the gameplay doesn't have much going on, so I understand the massive double standard I have here for this game. But much like Silent Hill 2, I have so much integrity ,that I will ignore my own scale and standards to gas up something that I like that I normally dunk on. Cuno is A FUCKING FIRST PERSON out of 10
Game 2: Hi-Fi Rush - This speaks to me. MIkami Got a White Person To Make a Good Action Game out of 10
At any rate, the game is still fun. It's been about 8 or 9 years since I last played it, so I'm glad I took the time to revisit it.
The combat was kind of meh, and it's way too frequent, and there weren't really many consequences for bad investigations or interrogations. But the storyline and characters were great. The side quests were the real stars though and that's where stuff got too bizarre and made you want to keep playing.
I don't think I'm ever going to come back to it, but as I've reflected on it over the evening, I definitely think it's been one of the better experiences I've had for this past generation of gaming. It's just one of those games that throws all sorts of ideas at you, some work better than others, but you're more or less guaranteed not to get bored.
Dragon Quest Treasures is done! It's a fun and light-hearted action adventure. It's less about hard-core action and more about, well, treasures!
Many of the treasures you uncover are past Hero Statues, Items, Weapons, Armors and Boss Statues, etc from all along the series' history. If anything, it's a great trip down memory lane!

I beat 3 more games since this post
Game 3: Mass Effect 3 - I finished my replay of this series that I started in 2021, and this time I played ME3 as a vanguard and with a lot of the DLC that I just never played when I played this game in 2012: Citadel dlc, the stuff with javik, leviathan, omega. And I miss this universe n setting, I want a movie, tv show, another game where in this setting where I can like the characters n shit again. This game is my kind of sappy shlock..........right until it fucks it all up with a stupid ending and the story tries to pitch this organics v synthetics thing as the central conflict of the whole IP, when uh, NO? The gameplay continues to not be good, Bioware caught up to gears of war in 2012, and some people like how more aggressive the vanguard is. But having just played the class, I think it's really unga and uninteresting. If you build it right you can make it so all Shepherd has to do is carry a strong shotgun, do his charge tackle, and then nova slam and shoot his shotgun before repeating the loop again with the charge tackle. The tackle itself tracks based on a lock on, and does not give a shit about positioning or height, and the cooldown on it can be pretty snappy, with the added benefit that it gives you a stronger barrier, and you get bonus damage for your shotgun. So now instead of a boring cover shooter, you are more out n about slamming into enemies, but it's just one flow chart, you're not actually dealing with anything as a real threat until the harvesters are around or some sort of large HP mini boss character that shoots rockets. The Ending Still Sucks out of 10
Game 4: Neon White - This game is my new addiction. Red Medals Only out of 10
Game 5: Citizen Sleeper - I wanted to like this game more, but I don't. I'm not gonna say anything mean about the game, just that I didn't care for it.
Playing a game right now that is the best modern take on a classic 8-bit formula. Fashioned very much after one of my favorite NES games of all time!
