Last week Crave Online did a very good hands on preview of LoZ: Spirit Tracks.  Here's the link.

One of the most interesting revelations is the ability to control Phantoms in this game:

The meat and potatoes of a Zelda game is always the puzzle intensive dungeon crawling, and the new game looks to freshen that up a bit with the ability to control a Phantom, the large invincible enemies introduced in Phantom Hourglass. By doing so, the game presents new puzzle challenges, as the Phantoms are immune to things like lava and spikes, and can shield or carry Link across such obstacles. Controlling two characters to solve puzzles is not a new element for Zelda either, but the implementation on the DS touch screen is what makes the Spirit Tracks experience unique. The HUD is essentially identical to that of Phantom Hourglass, but offers two new buttons on the left side of the screen, one to automatically jump the camera view to the Phantom's location, should you get separated, and one to call him to your current location. The Phantom himself has an icon by his feet that you can tap with the DS stylus in order to draw a path for him to follow, leading him through lava, onto a switch, or across a flaming platform, clearing a path for Link. You can also tap an object or enemy along the Phantom's path so that he will attack it.

Like the reviewer said, controlling a second party to help solve puzzles is nothing new, but the controls for it are new, and it sounds like a lot of puzzles will be using this so I expect to see some very creative applications with it.

Now that we know a little bit more about Phantoms playing a large role in the game it seems to make a lot more sense as to why we have one on the cover.

That was a brilliant idea in my book. I actually enjoyed revisiting the Temple of the Ocean King and finding new ways to skip through the dungeon in a more effecient manner.

Limited editions are not my thing, and never will be, but for those of you in the UK you guys may be able to get your hands on this.  A tin box for the game and 2 figurines of Link and a Phantom. . . yay???  Seriously as much as I'm looking forward to the game, do people really care about these things?

I dont normally but I like that set. Depends how much it costs.

why should zelda all of a sudden need a new design?  i think variations on the main design have worked great for these games for many years and can continue to do so

Then what the fuck happened in PH. Well to be fair there was plenty of puzzles in the dungeons, it's just never been so linear before.The dungeons have never been so bland before. Yeah its nice that they will have new puzzles added in but PH had new puzzles as well. The cool thing about that game was that all the classic items controlled in new ways which gave us new puzzles... that didn't help when the dungeon designed sucked major ass. Puzzles aren't the issue, linear dungeons is the issue, they better fix that.

And thats just talking about the dungeons. I dont even want to get into the overworld.  PH had some good ideas, it was so close to being pure awesome yet soooooo far. The sad thing is all that PH was missing and probably this game as well, is just basic Zelda 101. All that is missing is what has been working for the series for over 20 years, are these guys on crack how hard can it be.

Damn I am pissed just talking about it.

I'm not sure where you're going. The game's design is just fine.

 Where I'm going is that Phantom Hourglass' dungeons were horrendous, and substituted it with that crappy boomerang whose only purpose was to do smack-you-in-the-face obvious "puzzles".  And by the sounds of it they're going to do the same thing and substitute the gimmick boomerang with the gimmick phantom.

Oh you guys can go back and forth but ultimately the only opinion that really matters is that I think it'll be a good game.  And as far as you all should be concerned I'm god. Happy  And for now I'll leave the thread with this image:

I dont think PH is a bad game, its a great game, not a good Zelda game.
