So I'm watching the Clone wars. And the robot army all talk and act like incompetant goons.

But the Clone army are all Aussies and all identical. There is something I don't get though, the clones here all have individual personalities and are mostly all noble and shit. So I'm wondering how the Emporer managed to somehow manipulate this army of noble do-gooders into becoming his man-bitch army.

Also I'm on ep 1 season 3 of Buffy. It's...... okay I guess. Seth McFarlene though........... why?

I saw the Lost Bladesman. Pretty decent film, though not brilliant. They initially throw too many names and locations at you to make sense of.

It's set during the Three Kingdoms period so I would advise watching Red Cliff 1 and 2 before to familiarasize yourself with the period and characters.

The biggest flaw I found was Cao Cao, the prime minister who abuses his position over the young emporer. In Red Cliff he is played very well as an imperious, prideful and clever person. In The Lost Bladesman he is portrayed as some sort of everyman, willing to even get his hands dirty cooking and raking muck in the fields. It doesn't really work.

The basic story is that Donnie Yen plays a lengendary general for Liu Bei who is forced into servitude by Cao Cao because he takes Liu Beis family hostage. Cao Cao eventually releases the family and Yen but there are assasins out to stop Yen rejoining his past master because he is considered to be unbeatable on the battlefield. Cue lots of martials scenes and some impetus to fight them as he travels with the concubine of Liu Bei, who he has been in love with for years.

The martial arts scenes are good, one scene is particularly excellent but the fim as a whole never reaches a top tier level of filmaking. That said, it's solid and enjoyable and worth seeing for some of the fights.

Oh, awesome.

You know some films are based on the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history like Red Cliff and the Lost Bladesman?

Guan Yu, the general played by Donnie Yen in the Lost Bladesman story is a real historical figure and much of what happened in the film is taken from this life.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guan_Yu

Guan Yu was captured by Cao Cao's men. Cao Cao treated Guan Yu respectfully, and Guan surrendered to him under conditions. Guan Yu was appointed by Cao Cao as a Lieutenant General.

In 200, Yuan Shao mustered an army of about 100,000 and started a campaign against Cao Cao, which subsequently culminated in the Battle of Guandu. To ensure a safe crossing of the Yellow River, Yuan Shao sent his general Yan Liang to attack Boma (northeast of present day Hua County, Henan), in order to claim a foothold on the southern bank of the Yellow River. Using a diversionary tactic, Cao Cao moved his main force westward towards Yan Ford along the river. Yuan Shao withdrew his troops from Baima and Cao Cao's forces struck back eastward to relieve the siege on Baima. Guan Yu and Zhang Liao led the vanguard, and attacked Yuan Shao's remaining troops at Baima. Identifying Yan Liang's parasol, Guan Yu slew Yan Liang in the midst of battle and brought back Yan's severed head.

On recommendation of Cao Cao, Guan Yu was conferred the title of "Marquis[I] of Hanshou" (漢壽亭侯) in recognition of his effort in Boma. After that, Guan Yu left for Hebei to rejoin Liu Bei, who was currently in Yuan Shao's camp. He did not take any of Cao Cao's gifts with him and left behind a farewell letter. Some of Cao Cao's subordinates wanted to pursue Guan Yu and bring him back but Cao stopped them, saying "We are only serving different lords, let him go."

Today I saw 13 Assassins, what a fucking bad ass movie!!!!  Imagine Ocean's 13 but instead of robbers they are samurai and instead of robbing a bank they are going to kill the biggest shithead in history. The setup is so awesome, they really make you hate the villain. They setup all the 13 characters well. But most importantly they nail the payoff, the final 20-30 minutes of this movie is epic. Awesome stuff, thanks GG for recommending it.

I saw 13 Assassins last night.

Pretty good though not as good as reviews would have you believe. It's first 38 minutes are slow and quite boring but it serves as a setup. It's a little disjointed and has no particular rhythm to it. The next half an hour is like a secondary setup heading towards the big showdown.

Then the last 50 minutes of the film is a total massacre samurai bloodbath. Grinning

Vader you might like Azumi which has similar scenes and has better drama, although the final showdown in Azumi is ruined by the main character wearing a purple silk cape IMO.

Zatoichi is good movie too.

Also a much better film to watch is Red Cliff 1 and 2, which has that Dirty Dozen style of getting a team together to take on a massive asshole. It's much better done and much more entertaining and the payoff is better. Don't watch "Red Cliff" as a single movie as it is a bastardised version with more than an hour cut out, you have to see part 1 and part 2.

Sophie Scholl - The Final Days has a better decapitation scene.

DENNOU COIL part 2 review here

It's a rippin' yarn well told, with an actual ending and earned emotions. Keeping things just on the plausible end of the science-fiction scale doesn't hurt either.

"Dennou Coil" is one of the absolute best series I've ever seen, period. I love it and it comes with the highest possible recommendation.

So expensive and only released in Austrailia Sad

Did you not see Episode 3? He pre programed all the clones to have a switch that turns them into Jedi killing assholes. Order 66.

I don't remember that. I see.

It's a bit strange in the series as all the clone troopers take their helmets off and are constantly talking, where in the movies you never really saw a storm trooper's face.

Also the force powers are all super charged in this era. In Empire strikes back Luke struggles to get his lightsabre to move 3 feet. Here they are throwing around massive boulders or moving tanks with the force.

Just finished watching Alexander revisited. The director's cut of Oliver Stone's movie. Long-ass movie.

Bought it quite cheap. I had already seen the theatrical version before, and was disappointed. I've been interested in Alexander's stuff for a long time, and when I learned there was a modern movie in the making I was ecstatic. I didn't like the result too much, and was pissed at oliver Stone for flushing down the toilet my only chance to see an epic story about one of the most epic men in history. In my opinion the main cast was horrible outside maybe Val Kilmer (supporting actors did better, I think), and he mixes a lot of events and battles into an amorphous blob. Still, the extended cut fares better, and by the end of it I was moved much more than I ever was the first time I watched the film.
