Robio got me thinking about this with his ActRaiser talk. And it begs the question; Do you have any oldies that maybe you've been wanting to replay for a long time but still haven't had the chance to revisit it?

For me, one game that I always want to go back to year after year, but never seem to do it, is the Playstation Squaresoft classic Vagrant Story. In many ways this game was kind of the ActRaider of the PS era for me, actually. A very unique gem that came out of nowhere that not too many people know about, that ended up being one of the very best games of the generation.

Vagrant Story came out at the tail end of the PS's lifespan, had some of the best gameplay and story of any Square game ever, and really managed to push the PS technically beyond any other game of all time. The visuals and sound were near Dreamcast quality on a good TV with S-video. I'm really interested to play it on the PS3 on my HDTV and see how it holds up. It was a as I said, a very unique game that can be hard to explain. Very different from any other Square title. It's got a very dark atmosphere almost Castlevania or Dark Souls-ish, with gameplay that's kind of a mix of Diablo with a strategy-RPG. The director of VS went on to direct Final Fantasy 12 which also had very similar art style as well. I'm not sure what the guy did after that, but IMO he created two very high quality titles in those games.

Anyway I really hope to find the time to go back to it this year. It bums me out that, like ActRaiser, it never got the sequel it deserved.

How about you?

I've had the urge to play a number of classic games recently. I have a bunch of games on the Wii and Wii U Virtual Console that I want to play plus a whole bunch I downloaded on the PS3. Some of the ones I'm considering are:

  • Chrono Trigger
  • Chrono Cross
  • Final Fantasy 1 to 8
  • Final Fantasy Tactics
  • Secret of Mana
  • Breath of Fire 1, 2, and 4
  • Xenogears

Given my current console situation, yep I plan on replaying a lot of classics. On that list is:

  • Parasite Eve
  • Harvest Moon 64
  • Super Mario Bros. 3
  • Chrono Trigger

And I've also marked a few older titles that I've never gotten around to playing.

  • Soul Blazer (currently playing)
  • Terranigma
  • Breath of Fire 4
  • Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon

The only Harvest Moon I've ever played was A Wonderful Life on Gamecube. I really liked it but for some reason never felt like searching out more. I cup of Tea, some Eric Johnson music and Harvest Moon is one relaxing fucking sunday.

To be honnest, that was the best one.  My wife loved it, and played multiple other entries in the series after A Wonderful Life, but they could never quite stand up to aWL.

As for the topic at hand; I kind of plan to play at least Wave Race 64 and Boulder Dash (NES).  These are 2 games I bought while my retro consoles were stuffed in my parent's basement.  Now I have retrieved them, I should at least play those two.  Although I might very well end up playing Conkers BFD or 1080° snowboarding instead.  God I love me some 1080° snowboarding.

The N64 version is the one to play.  The Xbox remake was censored.

A Wonderful Life was very decisive amongst Harvest Moon fans. It's either the best or the worst because it's pretty different than other versions. It has a much slower pace than the others because it is looking at this one small town in your life over the course of decades as opposed to the usual two or three-year span that most of the games get their story in.

I always suggest Magical Melody for anyone curious about the series. The art style was kind of ugly, but the game had a nice quick pace to it and there was a ton of content so you're never in the classic Harvest Moon trap of having nothing to do. Plus, there is sort of a quest system that marks your progression in the game. Having a small goal always in reach is a nice way to keep you interested in the game.

Does it count if I never finished it? I think I still have a half-done Chrono Trigger save on my DS.

I also just finally bought the PSOne Classic (or whatever it's called) version of Symphony of the Night. I own the PSP re-dubbed version but I wanted a version I can play on my PS3.

Oh Symphony is another one I really need to replay this year. Literally every year I'm like "I NEED to get to SOTN this year it's been too long" and I never do. So many cool memories with that game, I need to revisit it just to see what I may have forgotten.

I'm currently playing Psychonauts.

I thought I never played it before but when I got to the Velvet world and I'm currently stuck on the Meat Circus and I remember playing those levels.

My friend rented it on the original Xbox so I played it there. I didn't know I played it before until I got to those levels.

SUPER MARIO MAKER LEVELS:

  • SMB Mix-Up! (1AB2-0000-0047-5A7D)
  • Storm the Castle (77BD-0000-00E0-A9C0)

It holds up fantastically. I'm in somewhat the same boat, I always wanna go back and I don't. It was available on a PSN flash sale a few weeks ago for $4, so I said "fuck it," and I'm glad I did. Just starting it up was a bit weird because I'm not used to the hilarious "What is a man??" translation and voice acting.

I started playing SotN about a month ago, and surprisingly I really couldn't get back into it. The soundtrack is still a thing of legend, and it still plays well, but it just couldn't draw me in. I think I have just gone through enough playthroughs over the years that the game just does not hold any mystery left. Plus, graphics and soundtrack aside, I think Aria of Sorrow is the better game and the one I'd rather play now.

That was a great game...I played it on Xbox back in the day. I remember the sewer part or whatever it was being hilarious. Feces.

I just got my GPD-XD in the mail so I plan on doing a lot of retro gaming on it. Max Payne Advance and Resident Evil: Deadly Silence get honourable mentions.
