Since you're clearly much more knowledgeable about what released when and included what features, I'll only say this: as someone who has been gaming for nearly 3 decades, but has always had a very narrow view upon this industry due to the types of games I play and how little time I can actually put in, LBP was the game that made creating/sharing a mainstream thing.  Others did it before, mostly in the FPS genre, but LBP brought it to the forefront, heavily marketed it, not just as a neat extra feature.  That alone means that it will be remembered in the years to come, even if it doesn't spawn a whole new subgenre.  Even if it wasn't the first to offer deep level creation tools.  It's a child of it's time.  It offered the narcistic millenials a way to ventilate their 'talent' and did so 3 years prior to the release of Minecraft and 2 years before PewDiePie started his youtube channel.  Modding isn't mainstream.  FPS level creators aren't mainstream.  If someone would ask what games defined the PS3, a lot of people would add LBP to that list.

Besides, this whole debate was about LBP being better than SMM, or not.  Not about how one or the other changed the whole industry.

And yet you chose Mario Maker over Splatoon?

I don't know what you're proving here except that you make bad choices. Nyaa

Sorry, I had to LOL

I do make bad choices, I already explained why. I am loyal to brands and they always get first dibs regardless of quality. So I had to buy the new Mario game, absolutely I should have gotten splatoon.

I know I know, I was just messing around. Happy Love ya buddy.

The reason I haven't bought Mario Maker is because it looks like some kind of PC mario making tool that looks cool, but nothing I would pay full price for. LBP with its production values and scope for creation looked worlds above MM. But I have only played LBP for half an hour and MM for 0 hours.

I just wish Nintendo would change the art style for the next 2D mario like they used to with each game.

Yes! We have been stuck with this NSMB garbage for so long now. The changing art was one of the best parts. GG if you don't create forget MM, finding levels is a mess and without any real progression feels kind of hollow.

How the heck did this thread turn into the LBP vs MM thread? Let's get back to Halo vs COD.

I put forward the argument that they are both................. wait for it.....................

It is good but if you're like me it gets boring playing against the CPUs.

The last Smash Bros. game I actually enjoyed for longer than a month was Melee.

That was only because I had tons of friends to play Melee with so we played it for years but by the time Brawl came out I was out of High School and my friends sort of stopped hanging out.

SUPER MARIO MAKER LEVELS:

  • SMB Mix-Up! (1AB2-0000-0047-5A7D)
  • Storm the Castle (77BD-0000-00E0-A9C0)

Bah. Smash has a solid online community and usually good connections.  Certainly no worse than other fighting games.

And I'll say this, any midsize town will have a community of Smash or other fighting game fans that will find public places to hold events. Great way to get out and make friends.

What I played of the new one was great, really amazing attention to detail. But for me personally they don't hold my attention anymore for more than a couple of weeks or less. This is the second Smash I've bought which just sits in a closet collecting dust. So save me the money next time and keep me away from it.

As a lone wolf gamer, I have never had any fun at all with Smash.

You are viewing this on some industry wide meta scale where LBP didn't change gaming forever, of course it didn't. It's just a game, like any Mario game or Zelda game or any singular title. And as a game it was brilliant. I still feel having all the tools built in and the entire game built around an IN GAME community is important distinction. Again no one starts half life 2 and sees the option to play counter strike or add mods. Those are OUTSIDE programs you have to run. It's not really part of the built in game. Some games built it in but I have never heard of a game like LBP where the entire game is built around sharing and accessing user content. Two different things.

It's history in gaming is one of a first game of its type, the cogncept of LBP is not like the PC mod scene. Not saying it's better, it obviously be design won't have any impact like true full mods can. It was a unique, extremely well designed game that spawned a successful franchise: it has its place as one of the highlights of last gen. Where as it stands now I don't think Mario Maker will even be considered one of the best games of this year.

I agree with the "don't compare PC mods to LBP" LBP brought UCC (User created content) to a body of consumers that otherwise would not have the opportunity.  Since then, games like Minecraft have come along to fill that vacuum, but LBP was the ost successful game to bring UCC to the forefront in the mature-internet age.

SMM will certainly be considered for GOTYs (it's a rough year with MGS5, Fallout 4 and Witcher 3) but it will get it's share of love.

I intend to play my 8th minute of it tonight.

Only in a world where Mario Kart 8 does not exist. Nyaa

In actuality I think Bayonetta 2 is the best game currently on the Wii U but that may be surpassed by Xenoblade Chronicles X.
