Yeah, but you need a good idea, that is easy to explain. Red Steel shoot and swing your sword, Wii Sports play as if you would do in real life, LBP is much more difficult to market. So yes marketing helps, but some ideas are easier to market than others.

This as well. Some things just sell themselves and I feel that Assassin's Creed was one of those concepts. That first trailer of the game showed this dude hoping on rooftops sort of like a spiderman, then he jumps down, sneaks up behind this guy who is guarded stabs him in the neck, and escapes into the crowds. It was badass, it grabbed the imagination of players watching it, from then on out it was just showing that the game would look as pretty as the trailer and people were sold. It was a case of right idea at the right time with the right budget.

It didn't really stand out to me. Open world is open world and running up buildings is nothing special. I mean I'm wowed by things like the first Killzone 2 trailer or that Lost Planet video, but the realist inside me always tempers excitement with skepticism. And because games aren't free I always research the games before I buy, extensively.
Ubisoft themselves said shortly after launch that the mixed reception had made them really fear for the success of the game. Gamers, didn't seem to care?
What I think is important is trying to find that elusive quality that makes some games sell and others not. Sequels are a given, the first sparked the success so the sequel can usually expect similar success.
But what about original games. What is is that first captures the imagination and why? If the industry could actually nail that consistently...... well.

I didn't stand out to you but I think it wowed most others.
I feel that is what you need to do, you need to show something that wows people, something different. Another big new IP was Bioshock. Remember the first footage of that, it blew people away, within minutes all the websites were raving about what they saw.
Dead Rising was a million seller, combine zombies (which is already a good start) with the new tech allowing you to generate hundreds of them on screen which at the time was amazing and you got a new hit.
Oh and it needs to have the qualities I mentioned above, it must have great graphics and nothing weird or quirky about it.

Yeah but how many games did that before in a giant open city game, none. Which is why it stood out.
But what about original games. What is is that first captures the imagination and why? If the industry could actually nail that consistently...... well.
I didn't stand out to you but I think it wowed most others.
I feel that is what you need to do, you need to show something that wows people, something different. Another big new IP was Bioshock. Remember the first footage of that, it blew people away, within minutes all the websites were raving about what they saw.
Dead Rising was a million seller, combine zombies (which is already a good start) with the new tech allowing you to generate hundreds of them on screen which at the time was amazing and you got a new hit.
Oh and it needs to have the qualities I mentioned above, it must have great graphics and nothing weird or quirky about it.
Games like Dead Rising and say the Force Unleashed and even Assasins Creed generate incredible hype and in some cases are overated. But even when they receive mixed or middling reviews, the hype and sales are just crazy.

I was thinking about how you wanted the Euphoria/Naturalmotion Indy game, even when these technologies didn't make Force Unleashed a great game or significantly change anything about GTA IV for instance. The likelihood is that the next gen Indy game would be very similar to the PS2/Wii version. And yet people would be hyped for one and ignore the other, even though they would both probably be 7.3 games.

Yeah I'm sure you remember when I posted that thread back in 2006 about the game and its trailer.
From looking back, it really wouldn't be any different to what we currently have. Uses the Indy licence, dudes line up for you to beat, then you move on. The graphics and animation would be better, but other than that I see little difference. But importantly like you said it has concept, Euphoria and DMM (even though they make little difference as far as I can tell) and graphics.
Assassin's Creed was marketed perfectly, it got huge hype, it came out at the right moment. That right there is pinpoint decisions to make a game the market wanted at the right time. Remember it was being previewerd early on, for many it was one of the first "OMG look at next gen" game. It builded on that hype, it had a huge open world, an interesting premise, looked gorgeous. The nice thing is that it shows you dont need to be a shooter to sell millions of copies, but you do need excellent production values and the proper marketing/hype. AC2 might have a harder time than its predessor if people that played the first game were disappointed.
