In reply to what was cut after DD: the 2 player mechanic and player-specific items.  They both made for more tactical races, as the choice of your racers was elevated above the cosmetic, and you could hang on to multiple items.

It was also a good game to play with lesser experienced people.  You could have them choose the baby mario bros. so that they had a higher chance of getting a chained bowwow, or you could go at it in co-op, which I really liked the mechanics for.

I know but I didn't think for more than a couple of years? You seem to have amassed quite a collection. Sucks that it was stolen. If there was a fire or theft of similar scale I would be devasted losing all my stuff.

Who is everyones favourite character? I like Mario, otherwise koopa or the toads are fun. I like Toads repeated super boost.

I forgot about player-specific items, that was fun.

I'll either go with Luigi or Dry Bones.  I always prefer a light character, but I'll play with a normal character sometimes in multiplayer.  Heavies only when I know I'm playing with people who are much worse than me, or if I'll be racing on a motor.  God, I hate those motors.

It kind of did my head in a little bit that the carts would not jump before skidding when you pressed the shoulder button

I just deleted Mario Kart 7 from my 3DS today, in fact.  It came pre-installed.  Much like the Wii game, it has rubber banding, and the blue shell is a bad joke that needs to end.  I tried to play it one last time this morning on 100cc, and in the last race of the set I got hit by three blue shells in a row and lost.  No one can make excuses for such broken horse shit as that.  I will not buy MK8 unless it has an option to remove blue shells completely.

Yeah, now you mention it.  I thought there was an option to turn off the rubber-banding... no that was Sonic and Sega All-stars.

I think if they were toi get rid of blue shells and rubber-banding there would be mass outrage from purists, but at least providing an option for turning them off would be better.

The new Mario Kart games have gone stale. None of them can compare to the greatness of Double Dash.

I can win every cup, with gold cup regardless of blue shells. Sometimes the game robs you, sometimes it helps you with special triple mushroom and the like or bullet bill catch up. Randomness is part of the series and what makes it so great in multiplayer for experts and begginers. Experts will always have an advantage knowing track layouts, shortcuts and special techniques. You can hold a shell behind you for instance to deflect attacks, or slow and drop to second place when a blue shell comes so it hits someone else or causes more people hassle.

It's horse shit.  Their is a good reason why many people think the original is still the best.  The more random the game got, the more broken it got.  It's great that so many people are dedicated to the series that they learn to cope with or take advantage of the broken elements of the game, but it's still broken.  The last three or four Mario Kart games could have been truly stellar titles if they were more like the original game.

I don't see the games as broken at all. Without the blue shell the game might be dreadfully boring to me. I would get to 1st position and sit there with no challenge and if someone tried to take me out I would have a green shell behind me to stop it.

The last two home console MK games were stellar to me. The portables ones are good. The only MK game with real, annoying, unfair rubber band AI was 64. Many people have other MK games as their fave other than the first, the first was great and has the nostalgia factor and it has the advantage of being the birth of the series. I wouldn't say that makes it the best.

That 'castle in the skies' level really looks the part.  Can't wait for MK8 to be released. Happy

Mario Kart 8 Wii U info

~~Nintendo today revealed new information on Mario Kart 8, the latest instalment in the fan-favourite racing series launching exclusively for Wii U on May 30th – in stores and on Nintendo eShop. For the first time in HD, Mario Kart 8 introduces original course designs that highlight the game’s new antigravity feature, which allows players to race upside down or up vertical surfaces. Racers will also enjoy a variety of series-favourite features including the return of 12-player online competitive play*, four-player local multiplayer, hang-gliders, underwater racing and motorbikes.

New features include:

Spin Turbo: While racing upside down or on walls, players can bump into other racers or certain course obstacles to get a speed boost. Spin Turbo fundamentally redefines the way that players compete, and makes antigravity racing even more exhilarating.

Returning characters: In Mario Kart 8, players can race with returning characters Metal Mario, Lakitu and Shy Guy. These newly revealed returning characters join a host of previously announced favourites including all seven of Bowser’s minions, who are playable for the first time in Mario Kart history.

New items: Two new items join the fray in Mario Kart 8. First, the Piranha Plant attaches to the front of the player's kart and chomps at other characters, banana peels on the course or even shells thrown by other characters. Each time the Piranha Plant lunges forward to bite, the player receives a brief boost of speed. The second new item is the Boomerang Flower. After acquiring it, racers can throw a boomerang at opponents to stun them, and its arc allows players to strike multiple opponents with a single toss. The boomerang can be thrown three times, forward or backwards.

New courses: Remixed classic courses make a return in Mario Kart 8 with favourites such as Moo Moo Meadows from Mario Kart Wii, Toad’s Turnpike from Mario Kart 64 and Donut Plains from Super Mario Kart, among others. The graphics and layout of these courses have been redesigned and reimagined. For example, Toad’s Turnpike now allows players to drive up certain walls in antigravity mode. The game will include 16 new courses and 16 remixed classic courses.

Live recorded music: For the first time in the Mario Kart series, select courses in Mario Kart 8 feature music recorded by live performers.

Control scheme: Mario Kart 8 will support a variety of control schemes including the Wii U GamePad, the Wii U Pro Controller, the Wii Wheel, and Wii Remote and Nunchuk. The game can also be played in off-TV mode using just the Wii U GamePad.

When Mario Kart 8 launches on May 30th, fans can also get their hands on the Mario Kart 8 Limited Edition software bundle, which comes complete with a Spiny Shell Collector’s Item alongside a physical copy of the game. The Mario Kart 8 Limited Edition software bundle is available to pre-order while stocks last.
