That one was the first new 2D Mario in many years.   There was cause for excitement even if it wasn't a remarkable game.  This one is not only mediocre, there is also precious little that's new about it.  I'm kind of glad people are indefferent to it.  Hopefully it'll send Nintendo a message.

I think the absolutely humongous sales of the two other NSMB games sent them a message. The message they got according to Iwata was: "This is what people want" a retro looking mario platformer that evokes nostalgia of the original. It was the wrong message, instead they should have just thought that people want 2D mario and just strived to make ever more inventive 2D mario. They are stuck with the whole rigid "New" i.e retro pastiche vibe now due to taking the wrong message.

I think the damned game sold more than Mario Galaxy and I think it was because of the 2D mario success that we got 2D Donkey Kong and Metroid though. I still think the Wii U game will be pretty great.

(Yes, both DS and Wii "New" games sold tons more than the Galaxy games)

I agree... as well as Yoshi's Island DS and the new Kirby Dreamland game on Wii (which I think was completely ignored by everyone).  NSMBWii is really really good.

I even enjoyed the DS game a great deal when it was released, and have played through it many times - and still play some of the excellent mini games.  Just can't get excited about playing a very similar game with more coins added

The coins drive me mad, the sound of collecting them nonstop in the videos I have seen will drive me crazy.

You may be talking shit, but you are spot on.

The new one is so far(I'm at level 3) a joke.  The platforming is still solid, but there is no challenge to be found whatsoever.  I'm sitting on 60 lives right now and that's without even trying very hard.  There has not been any real sense of reward here, I just feel like I've been going through the motions.  This may be this gen's SMB3, but to put this game in the same category borders on insulting.  If Nintendo wants to do this throwback style to Mario, to be honest I'm all in favor of that.  I'm a sucker for retro style games.  That said if they are going to do that then give me that retro challenge as well.  I'm not saying it has to be Battletoads or Ninja Gaiden hard, but at least make me work for it.  I understand they are catering to a different market now, but that doesn't mean they can't put in a hard mode or something.

Maybe it's the XL talking, but I MUST say, this is THE.MOST.GORGEOUS. "New" Super Mario Bros. yet!  Nyaa

Playing on the brightest setting, on the large screen... the colors just POP and the details are mesmerizing! Mario is the most he's been animated in the New series, the Koopa Kids look --GREAT-- and the tiny little details, like the simple embers in Castle 1-8 or the bubbles floating in the water in 1-5... the tiniest little 3D effects make it seem THAT much more detailed! AWESOME!

Played two worlds, the level design is super basic, no different than NSMB1. The good thing about this game is that the coins make it interesting as they are hidden everywhere. Plus there are paths to levels that I have no clue how to reach, there is some very hidden stuff in this game. So I find myself exploring these levels rather than enjoying fast platforming.
