Do NOT talk to him until you have a scallop in your possesion. NOT a white scallop.
To increase your chances of a scallop collect all the shells on the beach and flog them to Nook. They will be refreshed once you log off/on. You can store them in your cuboard.
In exchange he will give you sea items.

this is potentially a problem for me as 9pm-10pm was usually when i played this on week days. i'm considering moving the clock a couple of hours back to align it with GMT as that would make it a lot easier for me. but i heard of horror stories of the game somehow punishing you for fiddling with the clock. would it cause such a big problem if i just moved the clock a couple of hours back?

Yes, your turnips prices would never be the same again - or so I hear. You would have to change both your Wii internal clock and animal crossing clock. Or you could tell Nook you that opening times are important and he will retrograde it back to Nookway.

Last week my turnips hit 369 bells, but by then I had already sold my stash. I would have told you guys but it was pre-12pm and you guys wouldn't have been able to, plus I had to go out for six hours.

Actually I was going to lend it to you for a while, cause I had no use for it at the moment but then out of the sky a got a ? block. Two days in a row I got SMB items, with your cannon I am making progress on an all SMB room. Ever since I made my house feung shuei and put the four leaf clover I have been getting awesome presents from the sky.
Do you want to make some type of all Nintendo room right now or something, I'll lend it to you no problem, I just want it back when I have enough items to do what I want to do.

After you said my town was organised, well I didn't notice before, but I set my tree and flower planting up around my paths so I wouldn't have to go off road as it were to collect fruit and water flowers. So I went back to perfect it as you said and tried to line all flowers up with the paths and I changed some paths so I could easily collect more fruit. Planted some more trees, rejigged the coconuts too.
By accident I have nearly all the designs from Wendell to turn my entire path network into a series of train tracks. But I need the vertical track design which you suppossedly get by giving Wendell a sea bass. The gate dog said he was around yesterday but I couldn't find him. Git!
There are rare items, very rare items. Firstly there are the Nintendo items you only get from building up loyalty points at Nooks.
Banana (from the Mario Kart series)........................500 points
Triple Shells (from the Mario Kart series).................800 points
Yoshi's Egg (from Yoshi's Island)........................1,000 points
Bad Bro 'Stache (Wario's mustache - wearable)............2,500 points
Toad Hat (the mushroom part of Toad's head - wearable)...3,000 points
Peach's Parasol (an equippable umbrella).................4,000 points
Hero's Clothes (Link's outfit - shirt)...................5,000 points
Varia Suit (Samus's outfit - shirt)......................5,000 points
Wario Hat (take a guess).................................5,000 points
Hero's Cap (Link's hat and hair).........................6,000 points
Majora's Mask (wearable helmet)..........................6,000 points
Samus Mask (wearble helmet)..............................6,000 points
Midna's Mask (<3 Midna)..................................6,500 points

Unless you cheat with some sort of hack this will take ages. I have had the game for nearly 6 months and I could only get the Samus Helmet and I'm saving up for Majora's Mask. But then do I wait a bit and get Midna's mask instead? Damnit! Either way it will take another few months after that to get enough points for the other item. Also the zelda items and clothes. If you truly want hyrule, start hunting.
If you have 35'000 to spare I can order you a tri force and Master Sword. I think.
Then for instance I played on New Years day because you get items based on a real time calender so I have a 2009 new years shirt which you can't get again. Angry Monkey had a globe from Earth day. I don't think we got that in Europe, there are region specific holidays so we wouldn't get those items. And the japanese will get different stuff. The americans got a black DSi's, Europe got white ones.
Then there are events and rare items you can only get on those days. So if you miss an event you may have to wait till next year to get the chance to grab them, literally a whole year. The Easter egg items are from the event. It's only because I have 4 characters than I managed to nab spares for you and Steel.
The Gracie items are rare because no one can godamn afford them.
Pascal gives you nautical themed items like most of my stuff, the anchor and ship deck, cannon etc. if you give him scallops.
Mario items you need to shoot down from the sky. There is this UFO that I saw once in 5 months, shoot him down and get some really rare stuff, models of major city landmarks, leaning tower of pizza etc.
It's not just furniture either, there are clothes and designs too. And the Nintendo WFC items.
