Nah, it's my bad, aspro.  Any system that I own is required to have broken online service.

I was reading about an indie company (forget who) who had their game launching over what in most of the world is a long weekend (this weekend).  They are pretty bummed.  All the PR and marketing leading up to launch, and then they want to launch it and PSN is down.  They directed their anger toward "hackers".

It's natural to assume this is Anonymous doing it, but I'd like to know with certainty exactly what the cause is.  Most corporations (when hacked) never admit that they were.  Clearly Sony loses money when PSN is down, so it's something they'd avoid at all costs -- so it's not routine maintenance.

They were hacked or it is a major fuck up on Sony's part.  Either way some poor shlubs on the frontline at Sony is having to deal with it in a very painful and mentally degrading way.

Update On PlayStation Network/Qriocity Services

+ Posted by Patrick Seybold // Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media

An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th. Providing quality entertainment services to our customers and partners is our utmost priority. We are doing all we can to resolve this situation quickly, and we once again thank you for your patience. We will continue to update you promptly as we have additional information to share.

There is direct from Sony they have been hacked, its a fact now. It's going to be a bit , until they figure out how to secure the network.

Who hacks the hackers? Someone should.

Yeah pretty shitty of these little snots, it's one thing to hack a company. But hacking us all out of network, and making us worry about CC info this is getting serious.

Here's the deal.

If you want to boycott a company, or start a petition, or protest in front of a store -- then more power to you.

But throwing a molatov cocktail through the front window?  You just became a criminal.

Eh guys, maybe you want to read the thing again. It says that Sony itself has turned off PSN because of a intrusion. They never specified what was hacked or who the hackers were and what there motivations may or may not be.

Sceptical Iga is sceptical.

Besides hackers being idiots, what other group or persons would do such a thing and why. Also the only way to attack a network is through hacking so by definition it had to be a hacker. II doubt someone drove a car into the PSN mainframe.

Don't discount the word HACKER and HACKED. Which are both mentioned in a single sentence. Reading is important people.

The above applies to you too.

I am saying that it was hacked, but that it does not necassary has anything to do with the guy that cracked the PS3 and Anonymous. It could be an hackers that stole sensitive info, or maybe a virus is detected or something. It could be something completely unrelated.

That is with an assumption that Sony is telling the truth. Maybe some of their engineers spilled coffee on the mainframe or something. After that fiasco that stopped PS3s of playing games, I won't put it pass Sony.

Edit: almost forgot. PSN is not down because the Hacker bought it down. Sony detected something and then shut it down. There is a difference there!

They detected a hacker, a hacker is a hacker. I dont care what group he/they belong too. A hacker cause this mess and now they should all be exterminated because of it. Nyaa

It's Gabe Newell, the olive branch handed to Sony by Valve at last year's E3 was a lie and putting a version of Steam on the PS3 was a trojan horse. He still hates the PS3 and now he's taking it down from the inside. Keep your friends close but keep your enemies even closer. Nyaa

I know this is a joke but this is actually the second most likely scenario. Nyaa

I once read an article about a virus made to attack Iranian Nuclear powerplants. This thing was engineered to sneak in via usb, because those computers were not online. A genius albeit evil thing, that is probably made by professional hackers. People suspect the CIA being involved. To bad that the article is in Dutch, and in a magazine, but it is a worthy read. What has it to do with this topic? Absolutely nothing! So why did I put it here? I am pretty sure I was going somewhere with it, but I probably forgot what, halfway writting this POS.

That was Stuxnet, which was almost certainly a government-sponsored attack.  It wasn't just USB, there were numerous zero-day flaws used to propagate.  It was also highly targeted at the specific infrastructure used in the Iranian plants.
