Excellent review.  Never any doubt about that though.  It's two Punch-Out games in one, how do you beat that? I guess the only remaining questions are who made it to the final roster and what the hell is that final secret???  Online mode? Please?

That review has me so excited. I wonder what the surprise is, I feel its something to do with the classic Punch-Out.

Possible ideas:

  • Unlockable version of one of the old games (possibly one of the arcade games?)
  • Online fighting
  • Online ranking system
  • Extra playable character

More than likely it's something that we won't see coming.

Looks okay, still not tempted.

How can they not have a decent multiplayer mode? Or training like Rocky?

I want to level up and train. Or maybe have a hub world aka a gym and go out to matches.

None of that is what Punch Out is or has ever been about.  That's like asking, "why can't I import Mii's into Fire Emblem."  If you want to play a real boxing game there's plenty of options out there.  If you want over-top-characters and rhythm based fighting there's also plenty of options, but only one of them is worth a damn and it is Punch Out.

Amen.

No man, they could keep what they have right now and add training to pad the game out. It wouldn't take anything away. And if you had a small hub gym where you could walk about purchase clothing, talk to your opponents and train. It would be cool. It could evolve the design of the game with extra bits.

Great review, definitely pumped for the game. Will buy it as soon as I see it. Both World B and challenges are much welcome additions, and they expand meaningfully the scope of the original games. The world B feature is most definitely a nod to the original PunchOut arcade game, which made you defend your title after winning the belt from Mr. Sandman over and over again, through progressively harder opponents.

Oh snap, you might have uncovered the secret, a port of Punch-Out arcade. Body Blow! Body Blow!

I like this idea, the training could serve as many different mini games.

Yeah and level up your character like in virtua tennis. Remember that Wii Sports boxing dodge game? Do that and the more you do it the more evasive and agile you become etc.

having played a little bit of the NES version i understand what robio is saying.  it's so not this type of game.  it's an arcade type game through and through ... it makes no sense to have stats or to level up etc.  you have to get good with what you are given to beat the game.  there's no easy way around it.  like leveling up and what not.  to do that would be to make the game something totally different.  it's also a rather "pure" game much as i hate the term ... so stuff to pad the game out would be against it's spirit.

how dare you question God of Trendy?

Just doesn't work.  First of all purchasing clothing?  Why?  When you play you only see Mac's back and really you see through his back.   So let's just toss that idea out.

And as far as the leveling up, again it wouldn't really work.  It's a timing based game.  If you were able to dodge faster all it would really do is change the timing up.  Maybe Mac could get stronger through leveling up but that could possibly make the game too easy if he got too strong.  Part of the challenge of the game is that Mac doesn't do much damage and has to constantly weave around his opponent to get enough hits on them.

Now no more questioning me and and my views on Punch Out!!!!  ANd for his unquestioning faith in the game Bugs is now blessed by the God of Trendy and will be complimented on his wardrobe today.

No, you could walk about the gym in your clothes. Also have a system where the game delivers letters or emails to you about your progress.

Glass Joe or whatever sends you a letter saying how he's going to pound you next time. And if getting stronger makes things easier, introduce some tougher opponents.
