What did I hate about this game? Well I bought it a week after it came out not knowing much about it. It was $10 off at Fry's, so I picked it up. I had not heard the hype, so it can't be that I was dissapointed by it.
IIRC the weapons were enemic and unsatisfying. There was a lot of walking about and very few enemies. It was dark and I got lost a lot of times, then I got to a big robot thing "big daddy" whatever and died. The levels were circular. Teh graphics were garbage. The ART was great, but it was graphiocally poor, everything looked like it was made of enamel.
I did that twice then moved on.
Then later, and to this day, I hear how fucking awesome it is at every turn, that's were the hate comes in.
So I'll agree it's pretentious, and that it is not the second coming. On the basis of the unique art I'll even agree it's not shitty.

I do agree that it's kind of overrated. It was pretty amazing when I first played it though. But it did get repetitive and made me give up half-way. I still think it's a amazing game...just not really fun to play. Well, the fun didn't last long for me.

Honestly neither have I, but the speeches/letters thingy I did read was incredibly stupid. The books aren't meant to be as stupid as that, though.

That is why I love the Bioshock vs HL2 matchup, so many haters on this site on both sides, one must win! Bioshock is every bit as awesome as the praise it got.

No I mean I can't even begin to compare an arcade racer to a platformer. I would not even try to vote.

It's not shitty. It's not the second coming, either. It's a remarkably competent shooter at its core, with enough variety and fast paced action to keep anyone entertained. Unfortunately, it is dragged down by the pretentiousness of its plot, which takes itself way more seriously than anyone should.
