GG on the toilet.

When I started first off I was put off by the graphics. Everyone looked kinda plastic, and like Rugby players. Even old people who had no right to be two metres wide with a six pack. On top of that it started incredibly slow. The first hour or two is basically Kazama walking around talking to people in between cutscenes. Not exactly very exciting for a first time player. Then the charm of the characters began to come through. Bless little Kazama's heart, ain't he a gentleman! And of course the translation helped matters too. You don't have to wait long before you get up to wonderful little tidbits such as "shit happens!" at totally inappropriate narrative points, and old, renowned Yakuzas swearing like fourteen year olds.

On top of that the random encounters begin with some disgruntled man running up to you, and picking a fight. This is charming due to the excuses that they always come up with, and then the apology at the end when they've been battered and bruised. The side quests have the same wonderful sense of story, and I ended up spending eight hours from the main story running around Ryudo doing all the side quests I could find. And then there's the dating...this wonderful, dapper gentleman goes out on dates with women, helps them out, lets them "reward" him with sex and then never sees them again.

Oh, and let's not forget the fashion contest! (I know that's part of the orphan debacle, but you couldn't have hated that, Darth!)

I want the first two Yakuzas now! Sad

Dialogue highlights:

The scene: Kazuma has just sworn an oath with a Yakuza high up in dainty old Okinawa. The high up is quite old, and just discovered that Kazuma is Kazuma--a famous Yakuza.

Nakahara: “You’re shitting me... I just swore an oath with one crazy bastard!”

Kazama "Shit happens.”

Wonderful.

you should be able to get the first two yakuzas for dirt cheap.  the first one sadly is dubbed so you have corny american accents to go with the corny american translation.

have you been to the karaoke yet? cool

Best new series out of Japan, along with DMC in the last decade. If you have deprived yourselves thus far, you have my sympathies.

More charm than DQ! Seriously.

Yup, I've only done it twice. Once by myself, the other on a date. Mark Hamill is on one of the Yakuzas isn't he? At least he must put in a good performance!

Oh, about the karoake on the date Kazuma song which was quite different to doing just the tamborines and clapping. Is that only on dates?

Hey, I've further deprived myself of DMC! Haven't played one at all.

Okay, so finally I'm off to Kamurocho after almost 15 hours. Bloody Haruka was close to having trust level up, but didn't want anything! Sad Stupid girl.

A few noets:

Revelations are awesome. They were not what I was expecting at all. LOL

In one cutscene a Yakuza is threatening some Chinese chef by cutting up a pig. No matter what he cuts, a pig trotter falls to the floor. This happens more than four times.

And finally, (this one is definitely deliberately funny!) the game has probably the best slapping scene in a game ever.

Professionally? Nyaa

The pig scene is awesome! Heh, on second thoughts I think it probably was four trotters, but the weird editing meant that he was cutting at random angles that didn't seem to be well aimed at any trotters. Plus you get the shot from above where the only legs you can see have already been cut. Great scene, though.

I cannot wait to hear your impressions on this week's podcast. I wish I could have been on (along with Jamie -- since h has played it also) just for that segment.

If you do ever get a chance to play the first and second, you are going to have to be of a mind of setting the game in their generation.  ZFrom what you ahev said before, I think you would be good with it.

Yes, they reset.  Just leave the area and come back.  Just like in real life.

QUTES OF THE DAY!

Some young upstart who doesn't want to eat instant noodles:

“How about we make YOU pay for his stupid-ass shti?! We’ll take payment in blood!"

The "Artful Dodger" challenges Kazama to hit him:

"Hit me right in the chops candy ass."

Candy ass has already been assimilated into my vocabulary.

Yup, whenever I have a revelation in real life but post the wrong description of the photo on a blog I can always head back to find that little old lady on a scooter in the same spot! I suppose p

I don't have to worry about doing any of the side quests before certain parts of the story do I? I asume not. Latest batch of quotes:

He’s the tojo clan’s main source of money—this guy wipes his ass with cash.

“If you get beaten up you bleed…or sometimes even die!”

Yeah, that happened to me once.

“You’re so inebriated! “

He was very ineberiated I suppose.

Oh that was to me? You do not have to do ANY of the side stories IIRC.

I mean not necessarily that I can skip them, but that I can do them at any stage of the story. Like certain sidestories aren't specific to certain chapters.

Oh... um... I don't know... ah... gee...

I think that yeah, you'd miss them, because I missed most of them, and when I went back to those areas those folks were not around ready to dispense side stories.
