Scweet. Have you watched it yet?

I picked up the dvd, then a couple of weeks later the Bluray was announced Sad I'm waiting on a Memories of Murder Bluray.

First thing when I got home.  I've seen the movie a few years prior, but it's still great to watch.  It even has a English dub, which is good for a few laughs on how awful the VO actor for Shuya Nanahara was.  The collectors edition has the original and director's cut of the first movie, Battle Royale II, and a disc of bonus features.  Not too bad for $40.

The problem I have with the book is the million japanese names you can never remember. The film is a better experience IMO, shorter, much more entertaining and the story resonates. The book is kinda dry. It's good but I think you've been plodding through it for a while and reading it in snippets?

Maybe if you watch the film then go back to the book you will have a better sense of the characters? It won't spoil the book either, the book is much more about detail than anything else.

The names haven't bothered me much since most of the characters are just cannon fodder, and only last a single chapter. Yeah, I read the first 100 pages, and then became bored with it. I'm just over 200 pages now. I probably would have gotten farther by now if it weren't such a large sized book that's uncomfortable to hold (why isn't this on Kindle?! Argh! ). I'll see if I can get the film from Netflix soon.

Avengers reviews from fans who saw the early screenings!!!!! WOOOOOOO!!!

http://www.bigshinyrobot.com/reviews/archives/39533

Avengers is nothing short of amazing, but that’s still selling this movie short. ;font-family:'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, sans-serif;">It is the perfect summer movie;font-family:'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, sans-serif;">- wall to wall action, huge characters, and tons of fun. I have never heard an audience break into applause so many times in any movie as this. I personally had at least 5 “F@#$ YEAH!!!” moments of sheer joy. I say “at least” because I stopped counting I was having so much fun.

;font-family:Calibri, Arial, Verdana, sans-serif;font-size:14px;"> The final battle scene probably comes in around the halfway mark, maybe 60% through the film. That means that final battle lasted somewhere in the range of 30-40 minutes. And Joss made it all come together in this beautiful masterpiece of a superhero film. What he created is the perfect Avengers movie.

Crappy ones though, from untrustworthy brands. Not to mention that Asian Blurays can cost like £35-40

Ghibli film 'From Up On Poppy Hill' On Japanese DVD & Blu-Ray

Disney Home Entertainment have announced the Japanese DVD and Blu-Ray releases of 'From Up On Poppy Hill' (AKA 'Kokuriko-Zaka Kara') for the 20th June, 2012. Directed by Goro Miyazaki, the film focuses around a high school girl who is forced to grow up quickly when her father goes missing.

Synopsis

Late 1970s, Yokohama. 17-year-old Umi (Masami Nagasawa) lives in a house on a hilltop next to the sea with her grandmother and other boarders. Everyday, she raises a signal flag for passing ships. Noticing the flag every morning is her schoolmate Shun (Okada Junichi), who sees it everyday on his father's tugboat. The two eventually meet in school at a protest rally to protect the old Quarter Latin building, which houses all the interest clubs. Umi ends up joining the cause, getting other female students to help Shun and the other students clean up the building. In the process, Umi and Shun develop feelings for each other. However, Umi discovers a shocking secret from the past that threatens to drive them apart.

I thought "that looks cool" then clicked on the trailer. It's got to the point with Ghibli where they've reached Disney levels of predictability. You know exactly what the animation is going to be like, the soundtrack, the plot, the characters.

Sentimentality with predictability is a horrible combination.

I'm fairly disappointed with this film and Arrietty.

I'm waiting on Miyazaki's next film and Takahata's. The latter makes one film a decade. sad Miyazaki senior will retire or die soon and Takahata is even older. Ghibli might turn to dust in the next 10 years.

I look forward to Mamoru Hosoda's films more now, THE WOLF CHILDREN, AME AND YUKI is up next.
