I've been reading the book off and on. The problem I'm having with it are the characters; they are so flat and boring that I just don't care about any of them. Is the film better in that regard?

The problem I have with the book is the million japanese names you can never remember. The film is a better experience IMO, shorter, much more entertaining and the story resonates. The book is kinda dry. It's good but I think you've been plodding through it for a while and reading it in snippets?
Maybe if you watch the film then go back to the book you will have a better sense of the characters? It won't spoil the book either, the book is much more about detail than anything else.
The Avengers was screened yesterday and first reactions are out. No full reviews allowed yet so there is mostly tweets. Seems like everyone loved it. Many have an issue with the first two acts of the film but everyone agrees the final act is the most incredible superhero action ever put on film! Oh and everyone says Hulk steals the show.

I just picked up the collector's edition of the US Blu-Ray release a few weeks ago. It's now sitting on my shelf next to the original novel
