I am so happy. The Supreme Court is now putting oral arguments (No, oral arguments are not the ones you have with your partner) up every Friday in mp3 format. Before they only did this on landmark cases. The first one up is Snyder vs Phelps which is an juicy case, it's silly that it rose to this level, sadly Snyder has no case, but it's juicy all the same because of the distasteful behavior of the Phelps group.

Would you vote for a rich whitey?
http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/10/14/voting-machine-mangles-an-illinois-candidates-name/
Voters in some predominantly African-American Chicago neighborhoods will be faced with the prospect of electing a candidate listed as “Rich Whitey” thanks to a mistake made on electronic voting machines in nearly two dozen voting wards, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Thursday.
The glitch means Green Party gubernatorial candidate Rich Whitney’s name will be misspelled on voting machines in 23 wards, the report said.
Although the candidate’s name is spelled correctly on the initial ballot, when voters review their selections, the mistake will appear, Jim Allen, spokesman for the Chicago Board of Elections told the paper. Acknowledging a “difficult situation,” Allen assured voters would see the correct name “where it counts.”
Looks like I need to reissue my public service announcement.

I am error. I heard a speech on C-SPAN and made me sick. Picked the wrong transcript. Subsequent searches reveal that there is no transcript for the speech I heard.

That makes more sense.

20-year-old woman student is police chief of violent Mexican town
Mexico City: A 20-year-old criminology student, the only candidate for the position, was designated as police chief in the violence-plagued town of Guadalupe Distrito Bravo, Mexican media reported Tuesday.
Marisol Valles Garcia took charge on Monday of security in the town, population 10,000, on the US border. The community is around 80 km east of Ciudad Juarez, itself regarded as the most violent city in Mexico.
The former mayor of Guadalupe Distrito Bravos, Jesus Manuel Lara Rodriguez, was killed on June 19 at his home in Ciudad Juarez, after receiving death threats.
Valles Garcia said she will not have to fight the drug gangs, which is the responsibility of other law enforcement agencies. Instead, she will pursue preventive programmes in neighbourhoods and schools, and she will be in charge of reclaiming public spaces for the community.
Wow Just Wow
A lawmaker in this conservative African country introduced a bill a year ago that would have imposed the death penalty for some homosexual acts and life in prison for others. An international uproar ensued, and the bill was quietly shelved.
But gays in Uganda say they have faced a year of harassment and attacks since the bill's introduction.
The legislation was drawn up following a visit by leaders of U.S. conservative Christian ministries that promote therapy they say allows gays to become heterosexual.
"Before the introduction of the bill in parliament most people did not mind about our activities. But since then, we are harassed by many people who hate homosexuality," said Patrick Ndede, 27. "The publicity the bill got made many people come to know about us and they started mistreating us."

Also, of note. We had a trial here in Queensland last week of a couple who used the morning after pill. (Abortion is illegal in this state except in the case of preserving the mother's health -- and I guess using a morning after pill is considered abortion -- interesting take).
They were found not guilty, but yeah, bit of a surprise to find out about that law, it's something taken for granted elsewhere.

There's a distinct lack of details in that article. That is, it doesn't sound as though they used the morning-after pill the morning after. Kind of an important detail.

Woah. I think that Mayor had a news piece done about him on one of the NBC news programs, I remember them talking about the death threats and how he will not back down. Well seems like he should have backed down... what the fuck is going on down there. What will it take. You need some movie justice to happen or something. Something like The Expendables, a bunch of badasses go in and clean up the place.
As for the woman, uhh maybe a plant, or she just has major balls. We will probably find out she is like the niece of one of the drug lords.
Knife Removed From Brazil Man's Head After 3 Years
Brazil doctors remove knife blade stuck in man's head for 3 year
A man in northeastern Brazil is recovering after surgeons removed a 4-inch (10-centimeter) blade that had been stuck in his head for three years following a bar fight.
Edeilson Nascimento, a 29-year-old tire repairman, tells reporters Friday he is feeling great after the three-hour surgery earlier this week.
He is expected to be released from a hospital in the city of Recife next week.
Nascimento says he got into a bar fight in 2007 and was attacked by assailants when he returned home.
At the time, doctors only removed the knife handle, fearing that pulling the blade from his head would cause brain damage.
But three years of intense headaches led Nascimento to take a chance on the surgery.
