This weekend my wife was invited to attend a small first-year horror convention in Savannah, GA called Terrorfest. Definitely was a small convention, and not the type we'd typically travel to, but since they offered to pay for her room and offered her a table, we figured why not? Plus it's in Savannah, my favorite city in the world and I'm always happy for an excuse to return. Despite the convention's size it had a nice vibe, and we did have a good time. And the Saturday night afterparty ended up being a story I'll tell for years.

The host hotel was few blocks from where the convention is being held. Not a great place, but it did have a nice bar/club/lounge attached to it and it made for a good place for an after-con party. Kind of a dark place, large bar, plenty of seating, and even a dance floor.  We got there right as it started and it wasn't long before we noticed something was a little strange. Not all of the crowd seemed like the typical convention crowd that normally attends these kinds of things. There were some horror and con people (identifiable by their clothing, badges, tatoos, hair styles, etc.), but there were also just as many older people in their late 30's to mid 50's. Very clean cut. A lot of the guys were wearing polo shirts and khakis, women in  to kind of paint the scene for you. Obviously they were locals, but something still seemed odd.

And the longer we took things in we noticeed the ambience was a little unusual for a hotel bar/club. There were light up stripper poles for whoever wanted to use them (I only saw The Joker on one though). And they were playing more risqué videos to accompany the music. The X-rated Robin Thicke Good Girl video for instance. Then after an hour or so, a friend of mine shared some information with me. The hotel lounge, "Doubles Nightclub" is an unofficial swingers club.

Suddenly everything made sense. We spent the next hour playing, "which group is this person with?" which actually got harder as the night progressed. The Savannah swinger's community was also in for a treat because they got a free horror burlesque show (an insanely hot woman essentially bathed in a coffin), and some of the ladies enjoyed watching a guy dressed as the Joker strip on one of the poles. And one of my female friends dressed as "Chucky" got on the pole herself, and got about $5 after she had too much to drink.

I'm not sure if there was any cross-pollination between the groups. Everyone seemed pretty respectful of one another and there was some mingling, but I think the average 15 year age gap was enough to keep anyone from hooking up. No one I knew at any rate. I ended up being a real fun evening of people watching. Though I will admit, knowing just how much hooking up goes on at this hotel on a regular basis, I did feel slightly less enthused about the sheets on our bed.

Why do you say "mid thirties" like we are old. Sad

I said "older" not "old." Don't go putting your old man guilt on me for that.

Everything looked clean and so long as I didn't have access to a blacklight I can happily keep my head in the sand.
