I think my PS3 is about to get a lot more use as a retro game player, at least for PS1 and PS2 games.

My youngest daughter moved out once and for all a while back and we are turning her old room into a guest room, for those rare occasions when we actually decide to let people in our home. There's been an old Sony Trinitron sitting in there for a couple years, the last SDTV set we still have.

A lot of the games I've been playing on the switch were actually ports from the PS3 or at least that generation, the BioShock games and Nino Kuni, and it got me about thinking if there were any other games I still have in my library that I want to go back and revisit. LA noire is the no-brainer there, which I will get to at some point, but I think I may go in a different direction in the meantime.

While I was screwing around with the console, it was pretty easy to see that the menus looked pretty rough and I imagine there will be considerable downgrading with most actual PS3 games. But then I took a look at Persona 3 and a couple of the PS1 titles I have on the system and those looked perfect. In fact, they looked better than they ever did on my modern TV screens.

I know that's a great big no duh, but seeing it really makes you notice. So I think I'm going to take a step back in time again and go through the Classics libraries on PSN and see if there's anything I might want to grab and play through before Sony eventually decides to follow Nintendo and close their old store for good.

I got a good number of PS1 and PS2 games downloaded on my PS3. Still a few in there that I wouldn’t mind grabbing. Apparently Sony has this “Spartacus” service that they are rumoured to be unveiling. Part of that rumour mentions something about “classic” games being offered. It might be interesting to see what that turns out to be. However I’d rather just download the games that I want instead of constantly having to pay for service to have access to them.

Yeah, I was thinking about that upcoming service too, but I'm pretty sure they're going to save it for PS5 and I don't think I'll be getting my hands on one anytime soon.

And honestly, there's only about a half dozen games that I really think I want to add to my library. In total that's probably going to be no more than 2 or 3 months of whatever that service would be.

I'd like to take just a moment and bitch about how ass backwards Sony is with their some of their programming.

I tried to make some purchases on the ps3, but I'd forgotten that when they reversed their decision to take down the PS3 store, they also made a compromise with the purchasing system. Customers are no longer allowed to make financial transactions on the PS3 store. Instead, you have to add funds to your wallet either through the website, the PSN app, or through a supported system like a PS4 or ps5.

So that's inconvenient, but more or less just an extra step. Or so I thought.

So I logged into the app and tried to add the funds. No luck. In fact it didn't even give me the option. Something isn't working correctly on it.

Then I go to the website. Now I see the button that has the add funds feature, but every time I click it I get an error message.

At this point the last option is for me to do it through the ps4. And even that in and of itself is a pain. I forgot that you don't actually add funds through the PlayStation store. No, you have to go into your account settings, jump through a few more hoops and finally you can have access to your wallet.

So after 30 minutes, I finally have $10 added to my wallet so I can buy one damn game. But now when I log into my ps3, it wants me to verify my credit card again. And whenever I do that, it says it's incorrect. It's not incorrect, I just used it to make a purchase, but apparently I'm wrong.

So long story short, I finally shut down the ps3, waited 10 more minutes, and then that time I was able to just instantly go to my cart and download the damn game.

And another news I finally get to play Suikoden 2.

That reminds me. I wonder if the PS3 store still has PS1 Resident Evil 2. Id like to get that again.

The original Resident Evil is not, but 2 and 3 are.

The PS1 library is still pretty good overall. A lot of games have been pulled over the past couple years, but just about all of the Square and Capcom titles are there. About half of the Konami games are there, and for whatever reason there are a ton of Disney games that I still don't understand what they're doing there.

Sony's PS Plus Hyper Fighting Turbo Championship Edition platform is coming online a lot sooner than I expected. Because of that, I'm going to put my retro PlayStation experiment on hold for a couple months. Then actually works out well. I spent the last summer replaying old Wii games, and now I'll do the same with PS1 and PS2 games. Hooray for chronological symmetry.

In the meantime, I did discover an old PS3 game I had forgotten about, The Guided Date Paradox. So if Monster Hunter rise doesn't keep me too busy, I may spend some time with that.
