Bosses. Yay or nay?

I'm usually playing adventure games, but recently I've been on a 2D Metroidvania kick.

And the bosses are beginning to piss me off. I'm exploring, I'm having fun. And then a boss comes along too frequently and bogs everything down.

Some are mildly annoying, some are a massive pain in the ass. Some you have to grind for, some you have to reequip for. Some you have to painstakingly memorise attack patterns.

On a several of these games I'll get to the final boss and I just can't be bothered struggling through just to see the end credits.

So what are your thoughts on bosses? Are they overused? How should they be tuned? Should they ne optional or skip able?

Or should they be Nintendo style 3 hit bosses?

They're just part of the package really, depending on the genre. For some games they're the main event so they should be a challenge and elaborately designed. I generally like bosses, can't really think of one that really annoyed me.

I don't think bosses are the problem it's how they're designed. If they are a chore, they should be skipabble.

I just beat the final, FINAL boss in Elderand and Gunbrella.

Both fun games, Gunbrella is a touch short but still good.

I'm playing the Company Man right  now. Beautiful Visuals and simple but fun combat. I'm a few levels away from the end so it will be a short one. Nice, simple fun.

A good boss fight is a wonderful thing. It can end a chapter of a game with a bang, it can be the beginning of a new difficulty level, or we can wrap up a piece of a story.

But the standard Nintendo "3 hitter quitters? Yeah those suck.

And so on this daylight savings edition of what are you playing, I've spent my weekend with Kirby, A Boy and His Blob, and Symphony of the Night. Not a half bad group of games to spend the weekend with.

It’s been all Monster Hunter Wilds for me. Finished the story campaign and now knee deep in hunting High Rank tempered monsters. The gameplay in this is fantastic. Hitting a monster out of its attack with a charged offset move with the great sword feels amazing. Monster fights are tons of fun in MHW.

How is the high rank play? The one big criticism of the game i kept seeing was that it was easier than previous installments. I was curious to know if that was more of an issue in the first half of the game, or if it was throughout.

Its been a Donkey Kong Country Returns weekend for me, what little time I've played. I probably should have been finished with this about a week ago but have been too busy with work stuff and children's sports.

I feel like the challenge in high rank is still there. Low rank was definitely pretty easy.

It has been reported that Steve Nazar died. The name might not be familiar, but I think most of you would recognize his work.

nes_tcsurfdesigns.jpg

He was the guy behind the characters that T&C Surf Designs used for their merch and were ultimately featured in one of biggest "of-the-moment" games on the NES.

Granted the game was not good, but for kids who were obsessed with a mainstream skater culture, T&C Surf Designs was one of those games you had to say you liked. You had to wear their t-shirts to sit at the cool kids table at lunch, and you had to talk about how much you like the game. Because you weren't a real skater if you didn't like the game. You could like Skate or Die more, but you definitely had to like T&C Surf Designs.

Lunchroom tangents aside, those characters were in fact pretty damn cool and it's probably why the brand ended up appealing to kids so much. So here's one last thank you to Steve for coming up with some iconic designs.

Latest rumor is that an Xbox branded handheld will release this year.

It will be a PC handheld and not made by MS, but branded and clearly Xbox looking.

They say ASUS, Lenovo etc are possible manufacturers.

Anyone interested?

Nope. I don't have much interest in portables anymore. If Nintendo sold a no screen version of the Switch 2, I'd buy that over the portable one, especially had more internal storage.
