Bought this game on sale called Black Skylands.

It's a mix of top down twin stick pirate shooter and you can pirate your ship about like AC4.

Played it for 10 mins. The controls are very unrefined compared to most games I played recently.

The viewpoint is top down birds eye view, like you're viewing the game from a drone directly above the main character. It's zoomed so far out it's difficult to see. Humans appear as a blob for the head with two blobs for the shoulders. It's going to take some getting used too. The controls feel, off somehow, not responsive enough or sure footed enough.

As long as the combat isn't too hard it shouldn't be a problem. The ship controls are weird though, you have to lead the ship from its nose and rotate it. It's almost like RE tank controls.

Story and atmosphere are fun so far. I'm hoping I'll get used to the controls and the game will get better. The reviews I saw seemed promising.

Well it's Sunday afternoon here so it's time for:

What Playing: Went away this weekend so got some quality time on Spiritfarer.  I've started using a notebook to keep track of the details, which has helped immensely.

What Reading: Reading about the philosophy of Stoicism, which seems right up my alley. Basically that you cannot control anything but your decisions and opinions and therefore worrying about or trying to influence anything other than that is a waste of mental energy.  I'm really digging it.

Podcast of the Week: Why are you Laughing. It's a history of comedy podcast each week the host takes a look at a comedian or a special and breaks it down.  I've gone back and listened to the whole catalog.

This Week I learned: As part of my healing I've started a very simple breathing exercise. Which is as close to meditation as I've ever been (or ever want to be at this point). But after getting healed through a few simple stretches and accupuncture I've opened my mind up to stuff I've always shoved in to the "hippy garbage" drawer.

Getting close to the end of Veilguard. It did pick up again almost immediately after I posted my previous impressions. Overhauling my skill build definitely helped. The missions get a bit more varied with the battles a bit more interesting.

It still has struggle with finding the sweet spot between drudgery and annoyance, but it does it better in the latter half of the game. The value is very much in its characters and storytelling, but what you get out of that is going to be dependent on whether it connects with you. If you're here for the action primarily, it's probably not a winner. But ultimately I don't think the action is a detriment. Feint praise, perhaps, but it's important.

Tell me to get back to rewriting this site so it's not horrible on mobile

RIP Hackman, the story is just plain weird though, you all didn't mention there was a mummified course, what?!

I have been playing RE4R VR which is incredible, just the most fun I've had in VR. Also finished Castlevania Curse of Darkness which I tried to play and finish many times over the years and due to a special mod I was able to get through it, still not that good, one of the worst CV games to me.

And I just started Soul Reaver HD, looks so good! Game is so old! Block puzzles! Who thought this was the best way to do puzzles in 3D. Why was that such a huge thing. Like someone was like "how do we use all this 3D space in games, oh I know, let's move giant ass blocks around slowly!"

I blame Zelda. Need to get those Soul Reaver games someday.

Black Skylands is good, I was playing in bed. It's one of those rare games which looks over pixellated on a tv, to the extent that it's barely playable.

Then you play it on a small screen and it all looks right and is in proportion. Game is good, it's a top down shooter/adventure rpg where you can fly sky ships.

There's a lot more to the game than that. I've only been testing it out of curiosity, but there's crafting, resource hunting.

And it's very manual, in that to refuel your ship you rock up to a gas station and instead of a pop up menu you have to park your ship.

Then grab a fuel container from the hold, carry it over, hook shot over to the station and hold Y to refuel your container.

Then hook shot back and hold Y to refuel. When your ship takes damage there are visible holes you have to take a hammer to to patch up.

Story is fun too, I think this one will be a winner.

I definitely want the Soul Reaver Remasters. I only played a little bit of the first one on Dreamcast.

This weekend I've mostly been playing Banjo Kazooie N&B. I often catch myself just driving/flying around the amazing looking levels for fun in addition to the missions.

I'm on the 4th mission on Perfect Dark Zero now. If you enjoyed the game back in the day (I believe there's around 5 fans total), it still holds up well, except the enemy AI, which is terrible. Still fun to blast through them, though.

that is the one Castlevania game I think I've never touched. After Lament of Innocence, I was pretty convinced the world was not ready for 3D Castlevania games, and I don't think I ever heard a genuinely good word about Curse of Darkness. Sounds like I did not miss out on anything.

This weekend has been all about Monster Hunter Wilds for me. Enjoying it very much. Also watched WWE Elimination Chamber which was quite good with a very big surprise in it. Never thought I’d see the day.
